0:00:00 > 0:00:00# I don't care, I don't care... # Smash it, own it.

0:00:10 > 0:00:14Hi, I'm Martin and this is Newsround.

0:00:14 > 0:00:16First, have you ever seen anything on YouTube

0:00:16 > 0:00:19or YouTube Kids that worried you?

0:00:19 > 0:00:22There's been lots of reports about videos being put up

0:00:22 > 0:00:26on the site that are not suitable for children.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29Some of you have seen upsetting videos on there when you thought

0:00:29 > 0:00:30you were watching something meant for kids.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33So, as part of Safer Internet Day, Hayley decided to ask

0:00:33 > 0:00:38YouTube what's going on.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40Chardonnay, Lamar, Molly, Siddique and Umema invited me

0:00:40 > 0:00:43to their school to tell me about their experiences on YouTube.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46So we asked Katie to come and meet us.

0:00:46 > 0:00:50She's the director of policy for Google who own YouTube.

0:00:50 > 0:00:54So, first of all, can you tell us how you are going to make it as safe

0:00:54 > 0:00:56as possible for kids?

0:00:56 > 0:00:58We've actually built a whole new platform called YouTube Kids

0:00:58 > 0:01:00where we take the best content, the stuff that you're most

0:01:00 > 0:01:03interested in, and put it on there in a packaged-up place

0:01:03 > 0:01:04just for kids.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07These kids here have got stories to tell you about their experiences

0:01:07 > 0:01:08on YouTube and YouTube Kids.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10So, Chardonnay, would you like to go first?

0:01:10 > 0:01:13I was on YouTube listening to a song and an advert came up

0:01:13 > 0:01:14with scary messages.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17When I was on Kids YouTube, I was watching a child-friendly

0:01:17 > 0:01:19video by a YouTuber who was quite famous.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22In the video, the YouTuber started swearing.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25When I was on YouTube, I logged into a kid-friendly video

0:01:25 > 0:01:29about slime and a scary image popped up of a clown with blood on it.

0:01:29 > 0:01:34I felt really scared and I couldn't sleep that day and I feel YouTube

0:01:34 > 0:01:38should check the videos because there are lots of children

0:01:38 > 0:01:41from very different ages watching.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44I think YouTube should watch it before we watch it so kids

0:01:44 > 0:01:49like me don't get scared.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52All these guys have been upset or hurt in some way by what they've

0:01:52 > 0:01:56seen on YouTube and Kids YouTube, so what have you got to say to them?

0:01:56 > 0:01:59We don't want anyone to have a tough or bad experience and we work really

0:01:59 > 0:02:02hard to make sure people can see the kind of content we want.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06So I'm really sorry for all of you who have had good experiences

0:02:06 > 0:02:08on YouTube but also had bad or tough experiences.

0:02:08 > 0:02:09Isn't that too late for the kids?

0:02:09 > 0:02:12They are seeing dangerous things on YouTube and YouTube Kids.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14Surely you have a responsibility to check these things before

0:02:14 > 0:02:16any child sees them?

0:02:16 > 0:02:18We have a responsibility to make sure that the platform can

0:02:18 > 0:02:22survive and can thrive and so that we have a collection

0:02:22 > 0:02:25of content that comes from around the world on there,

0:02:25 > 0:02:29and we want people to be able to do that in a safe and responsible way.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32We also know that there is a diverse amount of content on YouTube,

0:02:32 > 0:02:36as there is on the wider internet, and it wouldn't be fair if I sat

0:02:36 > 0:02:38here and said to you, "We can make it perfectly safe."

0:02:38 > 0:02:43But things are still going wrong.

0:02:43 > 0:02:43Kids are still seeing things on Kids YouTube

0:02:43 > 0:02:43that are inappropriate.

0:02:43 > 0:02:44Do you need to work harder?

0:02:44 > 0:02:46Do you need to do more?

0:02:46 > 0:02:49Absolutely, we need to do more.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52We need to do more to make sure children are able to experience

0:02:52 > 0:03:00the internet in a way that they feel confident of, in a way

0:03:01 > 0:03:03that they feel safe, in a way that they feel

0:03:03 > 0:03:05they can flag content that isn't correct and they can

0:03:05 > 0:03:08get their education and support from us and from wider family

0:03:08 > 0:03:09and friends and school too.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12All these kids here have been quite hurt and upset.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14Some of them have not been able to sleep at night

0:03:14 > 0:03:16after what they saw on YouTube.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19Would you like to take this opportunity to say sorry to them

0:03:19 > 0:03:21and other kids who might have seen anything disturbing?

0:03:21 > 0:03:24I find it very tough to hear that you've seen and experienced things

0:03:24 > 0:03:27that you didn't want to and that you found really difficult on there.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29I would really like to make sure that that doesn't

0:03:29 > 0:03:32happen again and I'm very, very sorry for any hurt

0:03:32 > 0:03:34or discomfort that you found because that's not nice,

0:03:34 > 0:03:35at any age.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37While we're talking about staying safe online, we know things

0:03:37 > 0:03:40you see and hear online can hurt your feelings or confuse you.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42But that doesn't mean you need to be scared.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45Own It is a new BBC website which can help.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47So, head to bbc.com/ownit for real-life stories,

0:03:47 > 0:03:51advice from experts, fun quizzes, and videos

0:03:51 > 0:03:57with celebs and vloggers.

0:03:57 > 0:04:01Next, 100 years ago today, a change in the law gave women

0:04:01 > 0:04:03in the UK the right to vote in general elections

0:04:03 > 0:04:04for the very first time.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07They still didn't have the same voting rights as men,

0:04:07 > 0:04:10but this date marked an important step towards getting equality

0:04:10 > 0:04:12between men and women.

0:04:12 > 0:04:13But what does equality mean?

0:04:13 > 0:04:18We spoke to four women to see what they say.

0:04:18 > 0:04:23It means that if the boys can do it, you can do it too.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26Equality to me means listening to everybody and valuing

0:04:26 > 0:04:31what they have to say, no matter who they are.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34I think my very favourite description of equality comes

0:04:34 > 0:04:38from an indigenous tribe in Latin America where they say,

0:04:38 > 0:04:46our tribe is like an eagle, an eagle has two wings,

0:04:46 > 0:04:49one is male, one is female, only when the two wings are equal

0:04:49 > 0:04:51will our tribe fly true.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53Equality to me means having equal rights between both men and women

0:04:53 > 0:04:56or whatever gender you identify as.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58Equality is super important to me and it should be

0:04:58 > 0:05:00for all of you watching Newsround.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02The reason is because we do not have it yet.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05If we don't consider the voices of half the world,

0:05:05 > 0:05:13we just miss out on the voices of half the population.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18I see it loads in school where girls can't act the same way as boys or do

0:05:18 > 0:05:20the same things and then they get personally attacked by boys

0:05:20 > 0:05:21and that's not really cool.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23It's really important, I think, that we live

0:05:23 > 0:05:28in a society that's fair.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31If you are gay, if you are not white, lots of people

0:05:31 > 0:05:33are still fighting to have equality.

0:05:33 > 0:05:35We've got a long way to go, but we are going

0:05:35 > 0:05:41in the right direction.

0:05:41 > 0:05:43And if you want to know about this subject, then head online

0:05:43 > 0:05:46where we've made some great videos you can watch.

0:05:46 > 0:05:47That's it from me.

0:05:47 > 0:05:53We'll be back at 4.20, bye.

0:05:53 > 0:06:00Check out the rest of the day's top stories, head to Newsround online.
