0:00:10 > 0:00:13Hi, guys, Martin here with your Monday afternoon update.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16A zoo in the Lake District could close after permission for it

0:00:16 > 0:00:19to keep running was refused.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22Nearly 500 animals have died there and the local authorities

0:00:22 > 0:00:26said they didn't think that the South Lakes Safari Zoo's

0:00:26 > 0:00:30conservation plans were good enough.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33Air pollution is a big problem, and experts are trying out

0:00:33 > 0:00:37new way to see how clean or dirty our air actually is,

0:00:37 > 0:00:39and they're getting special help.

0:00:39 > 0:00:40Here's Jenny.

0:00:40 > 0:00:44This is Logan and he's doing a very important job.

0:00:44 > 0:00:48You might be wondering what is in his backpack.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50Logan has been testing pollution levels in last with something

0:00:50 > 0:00:55called a portable air monitor.

0:00:55 > 0:00:56-- in Leicester.

0:00:56 > 0:00:57His kit measures chemicals in the atmosphere.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59Researchers sent him out and about two places

0:00:59 > 0:01:02where there is a lot of traffic to test out the new tech.

0:01:02 > 0:01:07We spent a little while talking to Logan in a sheltered location,

0:01:07 > 0:01:09and there were some idling cars, some cars there that

0:01:09 > 0:01:11came and parked up.

0:01:11 > 0:01:13The fascinating thing is that just during that period

0:01:13 > 0:01:16when we were standing still, we experienced higher levels

0:01:16 > 0:01:18of pollution than we did with free-flowing traffic

0:01:18 > 0:01:19on the junction.

0:01:19 > 0:01:23But what do Logan's friends think of this new information?

0:01:23 > 0:01:26The people who have found out have stopped waiting right near the buses

0:01:26 > 0:01:29after school for their friends, that I know of.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31They've been waiting nearer to the leisure centre,

0:01:31 > 0:01:32further away from the buses.

0:01:32 > 0:01:37It obviously had an impact on them.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40It's hoped that if people knew how much pollution was around them,

0:01:40 > 0:01:44the way they look at the issue would change.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46Some footy, and it's rumoured that this guy Alexis Sanchez

0:01:46 > 0:01:47wants to leave Arsenal.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49The club's top goal-scorer spent Saturdays big game

0:01:49 > 0:01:52against Liverpool on the bench.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55It was reported that he was left out because he had an argument

0:01:55 > 0:01:58with some team-mates.

0:01:58 > 0:02:04But Manager Arsene Wenger says none of this actually happened.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07Now time to tackle an issue that's been bugging me for years -

0:02:07 > 0:02:08why are pandas two different colours?

0:02:08 > 0:02:14Jenny's been finding out.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17It was a bit of a grey area...until now.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20While most bears have fur that is all one colour,

0:02:20 > 0:02:23giant pandas have unique white and black patches.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26Now, scientists think they know why.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29One, unlike some other types of beers, pandas are active all year

0:02:29 > 0:02:33round and do not hibernate.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36-- types of bears.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39As they go in search of bamboo to eat, they move from warm rain

0:02:39 > 0:02:41forest to snowy mountain, so there are two

0:02:41 > 0:02:42colours help them out.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45The white part told them to blend in with snowy surroundings,

0:02:45 > 0:02:47and the black parts help them hide in the shady forests.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50Number two, pandas' black ears may look cute but they are actually

0:02:50 > 0:02:53a warning to other predators.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57They are a sign of aggression to warn off any wimpy rivals.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59Number three, the famous panda eyes.

0:02:59 > 0:03:04These black patches are unique, varying in shape and size

0:03:04 > 0:03:05from panda to panda.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07It's thought these help pandas to recognise each other.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10So, why are pandas black and white?

0:03:10 > 0:03:12It's all about blending in, scaring off predators,

0:03:12 > 0:03:19and getting to know each other.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22Some of you music lovers may be dreaming of being

0:03:22 > 0:03:23on a TV talent show,

0:03:23 > 0:03:25but when Tom got a call from Britain's Got Talent,

0:03:25 > 0:03:27he had other ideas.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29Jenny's got this.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32"Dear Simon and Britain's Got Talent, thanks for all your phone

0:03:32 > 0:03:34calls and invitations to your TV talent show.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36Sorry if my first answer wasn't clear enough,

0:03:36 > 0:03:39but I don't want to be in this competition.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41I sing songs and write songs for other reasons I can't

0:03:41 > 0:03:42even put into words.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45No need to phone me back, as now everyone has seen this,

0:03:45 > 0:03:48so I could never come on your show without looking daft.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51Yours sincerely, Tom".

0:03:51 > 0:03:54When I was six-years-old I started getting music lessons.

0:03:54 > 0:03:55Who inspires you?

0:03:55 > 0:03:57I listen to quite a lot of James Bay.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00He's just a really nice person and it's nice to see that people

0:04:00 > 0:04:03in the music industry are nice people.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05What do you think is brilliant about performing?

0:04:05 > 0:04:06The reaction from the crowd.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09When you get a good reaction from the crowd, it makes you feel

0:04:09 > 0:04:10you can be yourself.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13What do your friends think about the fact that you do this?

0:04:13 > 0:04:15They don't really care, in fairness.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18Whenever I'm trying to tell them about it, they will tell us to be

0:04:18 > 0:04:20quiet because they think I'm being a bit big-headed.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23How did Britain's Got Talent get in touch and what did they say?

0:04:23 > 0:04:26They rang us asking if I could do their show

0:04:26 > 0:04:29and my first answer was no, and then they rang us again

0:04:29 > 0:04:30and we also said no that time.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33Then the third time when they rang us we said no again.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36I just feel that it wasn't a show that I wanted to do.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39I didn't really want to take part in a music talent show

0:04:39 > 0:04:41and I like what I'm doing at the moment.

0:04:41 > 0:04:42I'm enjoying myself.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44What are your hopes for the future?

0:04:44 > 0:04:47Well, I'm just going to take it as it comes, to be honest.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50I would love to, obviously, have music as my career,

0:04:50 > 0:04:54but I'm just going to play the gigs that come and see how it goes.

0:04:54 > 0:04:55That's it, guys.

0:04:55 > 0:04:59Newsround's back at 7.40 tomorrow.

0:05:11 > 0:05:13Hey, Lifebabblers! Let's babble
