0:00:58 > 0:01:08to really begin.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11The organisers of the show have used a really clever way

0:01:11 > 0:01:14to show the story up by projecting these

0:01:14 > 0:01:16fabulous images onto the floor.

0:01:16 > 0:01:23It looks stunning.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25It would not be an opening ceremony without fireworks.

0:01:25 > 0:01:31I tell you what, Brazil has not disappointed.

0:01:31 > 0:01:37And there we go, Team GB have just entered the stadium with

0:01:37 > 0:01:38Andy Murray waving that flag.

0:01:38 > 0:01:42We welcome you in Rio, the Olympic city.

0:01:42 > 0:01:48So there you go,

0:01:48 > 0:01:51the flame has been lit in the stadium.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54The Games have officially begun.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56I think this opening ceremony was all about having fun,

0:01:56 > 0:01:59dancing and loads of colour.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01But now the serious stuff begins, the sport.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03Over the next two weeks, it's all going to be about

0:02:03 > 0:02:08bronze, silver and gold.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10Thanks, Ricky, looks incredible.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13Well, it doesn't stop there, there's a full day of sporting action ahead.

0:02:13 > 0:02:23Here's what's coming up.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25Fresh from his victory in the Tour de France,

0:02:25 > 0:02:28Chris Froome will take on Rio's cobbles and climbs

0:02:28 > 0:02:30in the gruelling men's road race.

0:02:30 > 0:02:35That is more than 250 kilometres.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37Commonwealth Games champion Geraint Thomas is also a

0:02:37 > 0:02:39strong medal contender.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43He is aiming for Olympic gold too.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45He is known as the bad boy of judo but after

0:02:45 > 0:02:48a disappointing performance in London four years ago,

0:02:48 > 0:02:55Ashley McKenzie is aiming to come back to Rio stronger than ever.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58If you are allowed to stay up late tonight, watch out

0:02:58 > 0:03:02for the first of Team GB's medal hopes in the swimming pool.

0:03:02 > 0:03:0520-year-old James Guy came out of nowhere to clinch gold in the

0:03:05 > 0:03:09200 metres in the World Championships last year.

0:03:09 > 0:03:15In Rio, he will compete in the 400 metres freestyle.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17And we want to know what event you are really

0:03:17 > 0:03:18looking forward to?

0:03:18 > 0:03:19Are you all about the athletics?

0:03:19 > 0:03:21Tuning in for tennis?

0:03:21 > 0:03:23Or mad about the marathon?

0:03:23 > 0:03:26Get online and tell us what you're watching and why.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29Carys has already emailed and she says she'll definitely be

0:03:29 > 0:03:32watching the gymnastics because she's a gymnast

0:03:32 > 0:03:35herself and she can use it to learn more skills.

0:03:35 > 0:03:36Thanks, Carys.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39Keep those coming in.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41Next, a big row has been taking place on Downing Street,

0:03:41 > 0:03:43where the Prime Minister lives, in London.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45But this time it's not between the politicians,

0:03:45 > 0:03:47but the cats who live there.

0:03:47 > 0:03:52BBC political correspondent Chris Mason has been investigating.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54MEOWING

0:03:54 > 0:03:56Take a look at this.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59Larry, the Prime Minister's cat and Palmerston, the

0:03:59 > 0:04:03Foreign Secretary's cat, fighting.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05BELL RINGS

0:04:05 > 0:04:08Experts say it is all down to territory.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10Larry sees Downing Street as his patch and

0:04:10 > 0:04:15Palmerston is not welcome.

0:04:15 > 0:04:16It's Larry the cat.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18We are at the home PURR-litical reporting, the

0:04:18 > 0:04:22home of the Prime Minister, Theresa May, and the home of Larry the cat.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24This is Downing Street.

0:04:24 > 0:04:28And now, there is another cat on the block.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31This is Gladstone, the Treasury cat.

0:04:31 > 0:04:35So a friend to join Larry patrolling the streets of power in Westminster

0:04:35 > 0:04:38or another enemy?

0:04:38 > 0:04:42With all this fighting, could a third pet prove

0:04:42 > 0:04:46to be a CAT-astrophe?

0:04:46 > 0:04:49Five million people in the UK have asthma, a condition which can

0:04:49 > 0:04:50make it hard to breathe.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53Most of them use inhalers to make them feel better,

0:04:53 > 0:04:56but now scientists are working on a pill to treat it instead.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59The team say their study shows 'massive promise'.

0:04:59 > 0:05:03Although a lot of work still needs to be done, it's thought it could be

0:05:03 > 0:05:06a step towards making new medicine.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09I think it's important in lots of ways.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12We have had really good treatments for asthma for many years

0:05:12 > 0:05:15that are delivered through inhalers which are great.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17But there is no doubt that lots of people with

0:05:17 > 0:05:19asthma really don't like inhalers so to

0:05:19 > 0:05:21have the opportunity of having a new treatment in a tablet

0:05:21 > 0:05:22form is hugely exciting.

0:05:22 > 0:05:26Now last up,

0:05:26 > 0:05:31ever wondered what a singing robot sounds like?

0:05:31 > 0:05:33Like this, apparently.

0:05:33 > 0:05:34Weird.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37Alter the robot has been programmed by scientists to mimic the way human

0:05:37 > 0:05:41brains work so that it has complete control over its limb movements

0:05:41 > 0:05:43and facial expressions.

0:05:43 > 0:05:50It was made by a team in Japan.

0:05:50 > 0:05:51Nice

0:05:51 > 0:05:52Nice moves.

0:05:52 > 0:05:53That's all from the team for now.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55Newsround's back right here at 1.40pm.

0:05:55 > 0:06:00Bye!
