0:00:04 > 0:00:06Good morning, I'm Hayley and this is Newsround.

0:00:06 > 0:00:09Coming up in the next few minutes.

0:00:09 > 0:00:13How solar storms could have confused these whales.

0:00:13 > 0:00:18And should fashion stationery be banned from the classroom?

0:00:28 > 0:00:31People in the Caribbean and Florida in America are getting ready

0:00:31 > 0:00:35for the arrival of Hurricane Irma, which is one of the most powerful

0:00:35 > 0:00:38Atlantic storms of all time.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41The hurricane is moving across the ocean and has just hit land.

0:00:41 > 0:00:44In Caribbean countries like Antigua and Saint Martin,

0:00:44 > 0:00:48people are preparing for strong winds and heavy rain,

0:00:48 > 0:00:51and overnight, some places have already started to flood.

0:00:51 > 0:00:56Officials in Florida have told people to start preparing now.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59The storm is massive and the storm surge is predicted to go

0:00:59 > 0:01:00for miles and miles.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03Right now, it is travelling at around 15 mph and

0:01:03 > 0:01:07the track has it forecasted to move just south of the Florida Keys on a

0:01:07 > 0:01:13westerly path with a slightly northerly turn.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16Do not sit and wait to prepare, get prepared now.

0:01:16 > 0:01:20Scientists think they've figured out why a big group of whales got

0:01:20 > 0:01:22stranded on Britain's coast last year and it's

0:01:22 > 0:01:23all to do with outer space.

0:01:23 > 0:01:29Ricky's got this one.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31They might look amazing, but these solar

0:01:31 > 0:01:37storms caused a lot of trouble for a group of whales.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40Last year, 29 young whales were stranded on the coasts

0:01:40 > 0:01:48of northern Europe and nobody could work out why.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51But now scientists think it could have been down to large solar

0:01:51 > 0:01:53storms caused by the sun, which are known as

0:01:53 > 0:01:57the Northern Lights.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00These storms in space could have affected the way the sperm whales

0:02:00 > 0:02:01navigate through the ocean.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04That's why they got lost in shallow waters and beached themselves.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07Beaching is when whales get stuck on sand and can be very dangerous.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09It can happen for lots of different reasons.

0:02:09 > 0:02:11For these sperm whales, it was down to the solar storms.

0:02:11 > 0:02:16But some whales become stranded because they're sick or injured

0:02:16 > 0:02:18and are pushed in shore by currents.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20It's thought changes in the environment could cause them

0:02:20 > 0:02:26to behave differently too.

0:02:26 > 0:02:27If there's not enough food,

0:02:27 > 0:02:30if temperatures are particularly high or low or if their environment

0:02:30 > 0:02:32has become polluted.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34And sometimes it's just down to mistakes.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36They can sometimes lose their way into shallow waters

0:02:36 > 0:02:40by accident whilst travelling to warmer waters to mate.

0:02:40 > 0:02:49Whales are very sociable creatures and often travel

0:02:49 > 0:02:50in large pods or groups.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53Marine scientists think that if one is affected by any of these things

0:02:53 > 0:02:55then others travelling with it will copy them,

0:02:55 > 0:02:59which could be what happened to the sperm whales last year.

0:02:59 > 0:03:03Well, many of you may have got new pens or a fancy new pencil case

0:03:03 > 0:03:06to go back to school but one teacher thinks fashion stationery should be

0:03:06 > 0:03:10banned because it's too distracting.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13Here's Whitney.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19First it was the bottle flip, then it was the giant mega-head bows,

0:03:19 > 0:03:22even the fidget spinners.

0:03:22 > 0:03:29But has it been taken a step too far?

0:03:29 > 0:03:31One teacher wants to ban your stationery as well.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33What do they want us to write with?

0:03:33 > 0:03:34Spaghetti?

0:03:34 > 0:03:36I think some of the stationery shouldn't be allowed

0:03:36 > 0:03:39in the classroom because it's really only a distraction.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41Nobody really needs a rubber shaped like a macaron,

0:03:41 > 0:03:43nobody really needs a pencil sharpener that is shaped

0:03:43 > 0:03:46like nail polish and nobody really needs a pencil case

0:03:46 > 0:03:48with seven different compartments.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51So what do these guys from Lancashire think?

0:03:51 > 0:03:55My favourite piece of stationery is a rubber because you can get very

0:03:55 > 0:03:58fancy ones like this emoji rubber.

0:03:58 > 0:04:02My favourite stationery is this because I feel cool when I have it.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06I like these highlighters because if one side runs out,

0:04:06 > 0:04:09you can use the other side, it's double sided.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12Normal stationery is boring.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15When you have a special one, it makes you feel special.

0:04:15 > 0:04:19I don't think the stationery should be banned because some people

0:04:19 > 0:04:22would have to fiddle with stuff to concentrate.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24If it gets banned, it's fine, because you've still got pencils

0:04:24 > 0:04:27to write with and you've got rubbers to use.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30You shouldn't have, like, pink things like that, or blue

0:04:30 > 0:04:34because it does distract people.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36People do play with stuff like that.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39You need to save it for playtime because that's when you can play

0:04:39 > 0:04:41but when you're in class, you have to learn.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43If it was banned, how would you feel?

0:04:43 > 0:04:46A bit sad because you'd just have boring plain pencils

0:04:46 > 0:04:50and that's not as fun.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54That's all from me, Newsround's back right

0:04:54 > 0:04:56here in about half an hour.
