0:00:04 > 0:00:07Hi, I'm Ricky and this is Newsround, all this on the way.

0:00:07 > 0:00:10A storm so big it can be seen from space,

0:00:10 > 0:00:14Hurricane Irma hits the caribbean.

0:00:14 > 0:00:18And the heavy baby hippo having fun.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30Hurricane Irma - which is thought to be the strongest Atlantic

0:00:30 > 0:00:34storm in ten years - has reached land in the Caribbean,

0:00:34 > 0:00:37causing major damage to buildings and bringing strong winds,

0:00:37 > 0:00:39rain and flooding.

0:00:39 > 0:00:44I've been following this story all day.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47This is the moment a research plane flew into the eye of one of the most

0:00:47 > 0:00:54powerful hurricanes of all time.

0:00:54 > 0:00:58To give you a sense of just how big hurricane Irma is, have a look at it

0:00:58 > 0:00:59from the International Space Station.

0:00:59 > 0:01:03The storm, which started in the Atlantic ocean,

0:01:03 > 0:01:05finally reached land earlier today, and BBC weatherman Simon King has

0:01:05 > 0:01:09been following its progress.

0:01:09 > 0:01:13The massive and destructive hurricane Irma made landfall this

0:01:13 > 0:01:19morning on a small island in the Caribbean called Barbuda.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22It brought winds of up to 155 miles an hour.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25You can see the eye of the storm there, really menacing as it

0:01:25 > 0:01:29moved its way through the island, and it will continue to move

0:01:29 > 0:01:32westward over the next few hours, in the next few days,

0:01:32 > 0:01:35across Haiti, the Dominican Republic and eventually the northern coasts

0:01:35 > 0:01:38of Cuba, seeing the real force of hurricane Irma.

0:01:38 > 0:01:43Irma's effects are already being felt in the eastern Caribbean.

0:01:43 > 0:01:47Huge waves lashed the coasts of the island of Guadaloupe,

0:01:47 > 0:01:49flooding the streets.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52In Saint Martin, winds of more than a 180 miles an hour

0:01:52 > 0:01:58battered the island.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00People across the region have been taking shelter,

0:02:00 > 0:02:03and many have been forced to leave their homes altogether.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05In Florida, in the US, the hurricane is expected

0:02:05 > 0:02:08to hit later in the week.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11There, people have been stockpiling food and essential supplies,

0:02:11 > 0:02:14and in parts of the state, people have been told

0:02:14 > 0:02:15to leave the area.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18The storm is massive and the storm surge that's predicted will go

0:02:18 > 0:02:19for miles and miles.

0:02:19 > 0:02:20Do not sit and wait to prepare.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23Get prepared now.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26The storm is now expected to move on towards Puerto Rico

0:02:26 > 0:02:30and the Dominican Republic, leaving people to find out just how

0:02:30 > 0:02:35much damage it's caused on its path.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41Well, many of you may have got new pens or a fancy new pencil case

0:02:41 > 0:02:44to go back to school, but one teacher thinks fashion

0:02:44 > 0:02:46stationery should be banned because it's too distracting.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48Here's Whitney.

0:02:48 > 0:02:53First it was the bottle flip.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55Then it was the giant mega hair bows.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58And even fidget spinners.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01But has it been taken a step too far?

0:03:01 > 0:03:04One teacher wants to ban your stationery, too.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06What do they want us to write with?

0:03:06 > 0:03:08Spaghetti?

0:03:08 > 0:03:10I think some of the stationery shouldn't be allowed

0:03:10 > 0:03:12in the classroom because it's really only a distraction.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15Nobody really needs a rubber shaped like a macaron.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18Nobody really needs a pencil sharpener that's shaped

0:03:18 > 0:03:20like a nail polish.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22And nobody really needs a pencil case with seven

0:03:22 > 0:03:24different compartments.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27So what do these guys from Lancashire think?

0:03:27 > 0:03:31My favourite piece of stationery is a rubber,

0:03:31 > 0:03:34because you can get very fancy ones like this emoji rubber.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37My favourite stationery is this, because I feel cool when I have it.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40I like these highlighters because if one side runs out,

0:03:40 > 0:03:44you can use the other side because it's double sided.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46Normal stationery is boring.

0:03:46 > 0:03:50If you have a special one, it makes you feel special as well about it.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52I don't think the stationery should be banned because some

0:03:52 > 0:03:56people would have to, like, fiddle with

0:03:56 > 0:03:58stuff to concentrate.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01If it gets banned, it's fine, because you've still got a pencil

0:04:01 > 0:04:02to write with and rubbers to use.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06You shouldn't have, like, pink things like that, or blue,

0:04:06 > 0:04:07because it does distract people.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10People do play with stuff like that.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13Save it for break time, because that's when you can play.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17But when you are in class, you have to learn.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20If it was banned, how would you feel?

0:04:20 > 0:04:23A bit sad because you'd just have boring plain pencils

0:04:23 > 0:04:25and it's not as fun.

0:04:27 > 0:04:31And we want to know what you think.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34Go online now to take part in our vote.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36You've got until Monday to have your say.

0:04:36 > 0:04:38Now, take a look at this.

0:04:38 > 0:04:42This baby hippo was born at Whipsnade Zoo, in Bedfordshire.

0:04:42 > 0:04:47He's called Hodor and weighed 30 kilograms when he was born -

0:04:47 > 0:04:50about the same as a fully grown Dalmatian.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52Zookeepers say Hodor is confident and playful though

0:04:52 > 0:04:53a little bit cheeky.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55Isn't he cute!

0:04:55 > 0:04:56That's all from me, Newsround's back with Hayley

0:04:56 > 0:04:59from 7:40am in the morning.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06Have you got a super skill or hidden talent?

0:05:06 > 0:05:08Perhaps you're a super-fan of a pop star or celeb?

0:05:08 > 0:05:11Oh, maybe you'd love to get your own back on a friend or family member.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14Or give someone the best day of their life.
