:00:00. > :00:09.Good afternoon. You're watching Newsround with me, Ricky, on the day

:00:10. > :00:10.the world mourns the death - and celebrates the life - of Nelson

:00:11. > :00:17.Mandela. Welcome to a specially extended

:00:18. > :00:20.Newsround, all about the life of Nelson Mandela, South Africa's first

:00:21. > :00:23.black president, and one of the world's most inspirational leaders,

:00:24. > :00:29.- who died peacefully last night, aged 95. Nelson Mandela spent 27

:00:30. > :00:36.years in prison after protesting against apartheid - the racist way

:00:37. > :00:41.South Africa used to be ruled. He is seen a hero across the world for

:00:42. > :00:44.helping to end that system. Later in the programme, we will hear from

:00:45. > :00:48.CBBC star Doc Brown, and from kids here in the UK about what Nelson

:00:49. > :00:54.Mandela means to them. But first let's look at his incredible life.

:00:55. > :00:59.Today in South Africa, people were singing and dancing to celebrate the

:01:00. > :01:04.life of one of the greatest leaders in the world. Although people are

:01:05. > :01:07.sad that he has gone, they are also thankful that he had a long and

:01:08. > :01:17.remarkable life, which was an incredible journey from prison to

:01:18. > :01:22.president. I am just glad that he did all he did for us, and

:01:23. > :01:29.hopefully, we will continue the legacy as the youth. When Nelson

:01:30. > :01:33.Mandela was a young man, white and black people in South Africa lived

:01:34. > :01:36.separate lives, under a racist system called apartheid. Under this

:01:37. > :01:41.system, white people - who were a small part of the population - were

:01:42. > :01:44.in charge. They made it illegal for black people to use the same

:01:45. > :01:47.schools, hospitals, and even beaches as white people, and conditions in

:01:48. > :01:51.the schools and hospitals for white people were much better. Black

:01:52. > :01:56.people were also denied basic rights like being allowed to vote in

:01:57. > :02:00.elections. Nelson Mandela believed everybody should be treated equally

:02:01. > :02:03.and led protests against apartheid. Sometimes they turned violent, and

:02:04. > :02:11.in 1964, he was sentenced to life in prison. Finally, in 1990, a white

:02:12. > :02:18.leader, President FW de Klerk, let him go. He walked to freedom after

:02:19. > :02:24.27 years in jail, and was greeted as a hero. Amazingly, his long time in

:02:25. > :02:35.prison didn't make him bitter, and his message was always one of

:02:36. > :02:41.forgiveness and unity. We soon grasped the fact that we are not

:02:42. > :02:43.conducting the struggle against individual whites, we are fighting a

:02:44. > :02:49.principle, fighting white domination, and in the course of

:02:50. > :02:51.that struggle, we can form friendships with people from the

:02:52. > :02:54.other side. Apartheid was abolished in 1991, and three years later,

:02:55. > :02:58.South Africa held its first elections in which black people as

:02:59. > :03:02.well as white were allowed to vote. Nelson Mandela was elected president

:03:03. > :03:11.and set about trying to bring people of different races together. He

:03:12. > :03:15.became one of the world's most popular leaders. And today world

:03:16. > :03:23.leaders praised a man who they said was an inspiration. We have lost one

:03:24. > :03:28.of the most influential, courageous and profoundly good human beings

:03:29. > :03:31.that any of us will share time with on this earth.

:03:32. > :03:37.There has also been a huge reaction to Nelson Mandela's death here in

:03:38. > :03:40.the UK. Prime Minister David Cameron said that "a great light has gone

:03:41. > :03:43.out in the world". For many people, Mandela's message of forgiveness and

:03:44. > :03:47.standing up to oppression is still relevant. Four O'Clock Club star Doc

:03:48. > :03:54.Brown told Newsround it is vital that Mandela is remembered. For

:03:55. > :03:58.children watching this now, I would say, if you have ever been

:03:59. > :04:02.discriminated against or if you have ever been treated Hadley, there are

:04:03. > :04:07.lessons in Mandela's story. And even if you haven't, there are lessons to

:04:08. > :04:10.be learned from Nelson Mandela's story about treating other human

:04:11. > :04:14.beings as you would like to be treated yourself. So, what do kids

:04:15. > :04:26.here think about the news of his death? Ayshah is in London. Modest.

:04:27. > :04:29.Humble. Generous. Devoted. At this school in west London, they have

:04:30. > :04:35.been learning about the life of Nelson Mandela. But then, he is an

:04:36. > :04:40.inspiration. Nelson Mandela was an inspiration because he brought

:04:41. > :04:43.fairness and equality to the world. I think Nelson Mandela is inspiring

:04:44. > :04:48.because he gave out the message that no matter what colour you are, you

:04:49. > :04:51.can do anything, you can be anything, and we should continue

:04:52. > :04:54.spreading his message. Nelson Mandela was an incredibly important

:04:55. > :04:59.figure not just in South Africa, but also around the world. There's a

:05:00. > :05:14.statue of him here right next to the Houses of Parliament. World leaders

:05:15. > :05:19.like David Cameron and Barack Obama were inspired by him, but he also

:05:20. > :05:24.inspired a lot of ordinary people. We came to pay our respects, and so

:05:25. > :05:34.that we do not forget about Nelson Mandela. Why have you decided to

:05:35. > :05:39.bring them today? Because I grew up in South Africa and my children were

:05:40. > :05:43.born in England and I wanted them to remember the memory of Nelson

:05:44. > :05:47.Mandela, the lesson that he talked to all of us which was about

:05:48. > :05:53.forgiveness. People are queueing up outside South Africa house, across

:05:54. > :05:56.the road from Trafalgar Square. There are hundreds of people in a

:05:57. > :06:02.long line, there is a special but in there where people can leave their

:06:03. > :06:06.messages. Although people are really saddened by the news, they are also

:06:07. > :06:13.celebrating the long life of an amazing person.

:06:14. > :06:19.Lots of you have been paying your own tributes, too. Aya says... And

:06:20. > :06:25.Maryan says he's a true legend and that...

:06:26. > :06:31.That's almost it from this special Newsround programme on the life of

:06:32. > :06:33.Nelson Mandela, who died last night. We will leave you with these images.

:06:34. > :06:47.Goodbye. # When I get older, I will be

:06:48. > :06:57.stronger...
