:00:10. > :00:17.Hello. Here's what's coming up. A warning that hundreds of thousands
:00:17. > :00:26.of these creatures may need to be culled.
:00:26. > :00:31.And is this the song to win us the Eurovision?
:00:31. > :00:37.First up, half of the deer in the UK may need to be culled, which
:00:37. > :00:40.means humanely killed of the damage they are doing to the environment
:00:40. > :00:45.and other wildlife. That is what a group of scientists are
:00:45. > :00:50.recommending. They say the deer population is bigger than at any
:00:50. > :00:55.time since the last Ice Age. Deer have been part of the British
:00:55. > :01:00.countryside for thousands of years. Now there's a warning that the
:01:00. > :01:05.number of these creatures are out of control. Researchers from the
:01:05. > :01:11.University of East Anglia used night-vision technology to count
:01:11. > :01:17.the animals. Why are the numbers rising? The problem is there are
:01:17. > :01:20.not natural predators. There is nothing to hunt the deers. In past
:01:20. > :01:25.years, there would have been wolves and they would have maintained the
:01:26. > :01:30.numbers. What is the problem to have so many? They are an important
:01:30. > :01:39.part of our habitat because they graze certain areas. If you have
:01:39. > :01:43.too many the balance is upset. It munches away on our flowers,
:01:43. > :01:47.bluebells and things like that. They come into our human areas much
:01:47. > :01:51.more. For instance, there is an in creased number of road traffic
:01:51. > :01:55.accidents. That can lead to fatalities. Researchers say the
:01:55. > :01:58.only way to control the number of deer is to carry out a cull of
:01:58. > :02:02.750,000 of them. They say this is important and should happen
:02:02. > :02:06.urgently in order to protect the countryside. Not everyone is in
:02:06. > :02:10.favour. One animal charity say a yearly cull is unnecessary and the
:02:10. > :02:15.RSPCA have said if a cull does go ahead, it will have to be carried
:02:15. > :02:20.out in a humane way. Whatever happens, many people hope deer will
:02:20. > :02:24.be an important part of our countryside for years to come.
:02:24. > :02:29.Today is World Book Day - a celebration of reading in over 100
:02:29. > :02:38.countries. Loads of you have dressed up as your favourite
:02:38. > :02:44.fictional characters. Here is Felix dressed as Plop the Owl, from Who
:02:44. > :02:48.Was Afraid of the Dark and here is Phoebe as Dorothy from The Wizard
:02:48. > :02:53.of Oz. There are so many distractions that some kids are
:02:53. > :03:03.reading less. We've had a lively debate about this on the website.
:03:03. > :03:19.
:03:19. > :03:24.Loads of you have told us what Thank you very much. Now a new
:03:24. > :03:28.study out today has found eating a lot of bacon, salami and other
:03:28. > :03:34.processed meats can be really bad for you. While small amounts can be
:03:34. > :03:39.fine for your health, eating a lot of this meat can increase
:03:39. > :03:42.developing heart disease later on in late. It is meat preserved by
:03:42. > :03:46.adding salt or other chemicals. There is more information on this
:03:47. > :03:53.on the website. Finally, it has not gone well for us in recent years.
:03:53. > :03:57.Can it be any different in 2013? I am talking about the Eurovision
:03:57. > :04:04.Song Contest. The UK's entry has been announced. Right now things
:04:04. > :04:08.are looking good for British music - Adele, one direction and Mumford
:04:08. > :04:11.and Sons have conquered America. Flying the flag for the UK this
:04:12. > :04:17.year will be 61-year-old Bonnie Tyler.
:04:17. > :04:24.She might not mean a lot to you, but mention her to your parents or
:04:24. > :04:31.even grandparents and they will remember her. She topped the charts
:04:31. > :04:36.in the 1980s with ballards like this and this... # I need a hero #
:04:36. > :04:39.It's not the first time they have gone for a golden oldy. Remember
:04:39. > :04:47.Engelbert Humperdinck from last year? It looks like the people who
