:00:00. > :00:10.Good afternoon! You're watching Newsround with me, Ricky. On the

:00:11. > :00:23.way... The Olympic torch blasts off into space. The secret world of

:00:24. > :00:28.spies becomes less secret. Why balloons are being used in the fight

:00:29. > :00:36.against crime. First, while you guys were sleeping early this morning -

:00:37. > :00:39.this happened. We have liftoff. An Olympic torch blasted into space.

:00:40. > :00:42.It's all part of Russia's preparations for the Winter Games in

:00:43. > :00:46.Sochi next year. For many, this part of the torch relay is being seen as

:00:47. > :00:50.a chance for Russia to show itself off as a strong and modern country,

:00:51. > :00:56.a world leader when it comes to space. Watch out for the flashes in

:00:57. > :01:01.Leah's report. It was still dark early this morning when three

:01:02. > :01:09.cosmonauts and one very special torch started its mission. We have

:01:10. > :01:15.liftoff! For many, this blastoff will be a moment they will not

:01:16. > :01:20.forget, especially people watching from the launch site in Kazakhstan.

:01:21. > :01:25.There it goes, off to the International Space Station with the

:01:26. > :01:31.Olympic torch on board! It is so loud you can feel it in your feet.

:01:32. > :01:33.It is a dramatic reminder of Russia's leading role in

:01:34. > :01:39.It is a dramatic reminder of space flight. All the excitement

:01:40. > :02:02.built up to next year. Next - it's been a huge

:02:03. > :02:11.day in the usually super-secretive world of spying. For the first time

:02:12. > :02:14.ever, bosses from the UK's three top spy agencies have been shown on TV,

:02:15. > :02:18.being grilled by a group of MPs They defended the work of Britain's

:02:19. > :02:21.spies, with the head of MI5 saying that they worked for "freedom and

:02:22. > :02:24.democracy". Spying has been big news in recent months, after documents

:02:25. > :02:28.suggesting that US and UK spy agencies have been able to tap into

:02:29. > :02:30.millions of emails were published in a newspaper. You are travelling

:02:31. > :02:36.through the same waters where you disappeared. If you wanted to catch

:02:37. > :02:41.spies on film this is as close as you can get. Shows like CBBC's MI

:02:42. > :02:45.High, Spykids or James Bond. But today, for the first time, the heads

:02:46. > :02:49.of the UK's three main spying agencies MI5, MI6 and GCHQ appeared

:02:50. > :02:55.Live on TV for the first time in front of a committee of MPs. They

:02:56. > :03:05.might just look like men in suits but it's a huge moment. These are

:03:06. > :03:11.people who you hear about but you do not see them. We are going to be a

:03:12. > :03:14.bit more wise by the end of today with regards to the world is that

:03:15. > :03:18.spies living and what they are up against. Years ago, top spies

:03:19. > :03:22.appearing like this would never have happened. Their faces were never

:03:23. > :03:25.shown, and their identities were kept secret. But more recently, spy

:03:26. > :03:30.agencies have become more open. So who are the three main agencies and

:03:31. > :03:33.what do they do? MI5's role is to protect the UK itself from any

:03:34. > :03:36.threats from terrorism or violence. MI6 tries to find out

:03:37. > :03:38.threats from terrorism or violence. from overseas. And GCHQ listens to

:03:39. > :03:40.phone calls and reads emails from all

:03:41. > :03:42.phone calls and reads emails from spy bosses are answering questions

:03:43. > :03:45.about how they collect info using mobiles and the internet. It's after

:03:46. > :03:48.US security worker Edward Snowden leaked details of spying missions to

:03:49. > :03:53.a British newspaper which suggested that millions of emails have been

:03:54. > :03:57.monitored. The public grilling of these top spies today is seen as

:03:58. > :04:01.such a big deal because of the news that so much spying has been going

:04:02. > :04:06.on. Everyone accepts that spies need to do their work in secret to keep

:04:07. > :04:09.the country safe. But many think we need to know more about their

:04:10. > :04:14.methods to make sure that they don't gather more secret info than they

:04:15. > :04:17.really need. Next - Justin Bieber is in trouble

:04:18. > :04:21.with police in Brazil after apparently painting on a wall in the

:04:22. > :04:24.south American country. He could be made to pay a fine after pictures

:04:25. > :04:27.which appear to show him spraying graffiti, were printed in local

:04:28. > :04:30.newspapers. Now it's claimed officers want to talk to him about

:04:31. > :04:34.it. Finally, spotted any strange balloons in your house recently

:04:35. > :04:38.Police in South Yorkshire are using a very unusual way to warn people

:04:39. > :04:41.about the risks of burglary - by breaking in to homes themselves

:04:42. > :04:44.Officers try to enter unlocked houses through doors or windows and

:04:45. > :04:50.leave a balloon to show people living there how easy it was to get

:04:51. > :04:59.in. I would be petrified if I found one of though -- those balloons in

:05:00. > :05:01.my house. Lego fans - head over to the Newsround website
