0:00:15 > 0:00:17Newsround of the week.

0:00:17 > 0:00:21First up, how clean is the air we're breathing?

0:00:21 > 0:00:23Research by the World Health Organisation last year said

0:00:23 > 0:00:26the quality of the air in more than 44 UK cities

0:00:26 > 0:00:28wasn't good enough.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31And one girl is worried enough to do something about it.

0:00:31 > 0:00:32Whitney's been to meet her.

0:00:32 > 0:00:37Air pollution isn't always easy to see.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40It's caused by burning fossil fuels, things like coal and oil

0:00:40 > 0:00:42that we use to make heat, electricity, and to

0:00:42 > 0:00:46fuel cars and lorries.

0:00:46 > 0:00:50Hadil goes to a school in a part of London with one of the highest

0:00:50 > 0:00:53levels of air pollution in the country.

0:00:53 > 0:00:57This road is really busy with trucks, vans, cars, buses.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00You name it.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02Using this special camera, we can see some of the harmful

0:01:02 > 0:01:03gases in the air.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06Look as it drives off, look at the cars next to it as well.

0:01:08 > 0:01:09Nothing.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11You can't see anything.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14But what are we actually looking at?

0:01:17 > 0:01:19Hi, David.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22We've been taking a look at the exhausts of cars.

0:01:22 > 0:01:27Can you tell us what this means, and is it really harmful?

0:01:27 > 0:01:31Well, I can see here that you've got pollution coming out

0:01:31 > 0:01:33of the exhausts of vehicles.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35That's mainly going to be nitrogen dioxide and very small particles,

0:01:35 > 0:01:40both of which can be damaging for your health.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43It's not a worry for most of us who are healthy,

0:01:45 > 0:01:48like many old people do, or if you have asthma,

0:01:48 > 0:01:50then both of those things can be affected by air pollution.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, says the problem is unacceptable,

0:01:53 > 0:01:55and has promised to help get pollution levels down

0:02:26 > 0:02:30His office told us that the Mayor was doing everything in his power

0:02:30 > 0:02:36to tackle London's toxic air.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39Creating 12 low emission bus zones, phasing out diesel taxis,

0:02:39 > 0:02:41checking the quality of air around schools, and alerting people

0:02:41 > 0:02:48when air quality falls below a certain standard.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50They say the Mayor now wants the Government to introduce

0:02:50 > 0:02:53a special fund to help people replace high emission vehicles.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55The Government has promised to give £3.5 billion to help
