0:00:03 > 0:00:06Good morning, I'm Ayshah.

0:00:06 > 0:00:07Coming up on Monday's Newsround...

0:00:07 > 0:00:10FA cup shocker.

0:00:10 > 0:00:16And, we meet these fluffy little babies.

0:00:25 > 0:00:29First up, how clean is the air we're breathing?

0:00:29 > 0:00:37Research by the World Health Organisation said the quality

0:00:37 > 0:00:40of the air in more than 44 UK cities isn't good enough.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43And one girl is doing something to try and change that.

0:00:43 > 0:00:44Whitney's been to meet her.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46Air pollution isn't always easy to see.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48It's caused by burning fossil fuels, things like coal and oil

0:00:48 > 0:00:50that we use to make heat, electricity, and to

0:00:50 > 0:00:52fuel cars and lorries.

0:00:52 > 0:00:56Hadil goes to a school in a part of London with one of the highest

0:00:56 > 0:01:00levels of air pollution in the country.

0:01:00 > 0:01:04This road is really busy with trucks, vans, cars, buses.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06You name it.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09Using this special camera, we can see some of the harmful

0:01:09 > 0:01:11gases in the air.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14Look as it drives off, look at the cars next to it as well.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16And when you put it in normal mode...

0:01:16 > 0:01:17Nothing.

0:01:17 > 0:01:18You can't see anything.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20But what are we actually looking at?

0:01:20 > 0:01:23This lab measures quality of air from all over the UK.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25Hi, David.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28We've been taking a look at the exhausts of cars.

0:01:28 > 0:01:32Can you tell us what this means, and is it really harmful?

0:01:32 > 0:01:35Well, I can see here that you've got pollution coming out

0:01:35 > 0:01:36of the exhausts of vehicles.

0:01:36 > 0:01:40That's mainly going to be nitrogen dioxide and very small particles,

0:01:40 > 0:01:44both of which can be damaging for your health.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46It's not a worry for most of us who are healthy,

0:01:46 > 0:01:49but if you have an existing problem with your breathing,

0:01:49 > 0:01:51like many old people do, or if you have asthma,

0:01:51 > 0:01:55then both of those things can be affected by air pollution.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, says the problem is unacceptable,

0:01:58 > 0:02:00and has promised to help get pollution levels down

0:02:00 > 0:02:06to World Health Organization standards by 2030.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09But Hadil wants more done more quickly.

0:02:09 > 0:02:13I'm writing this letter to the London mayor Sadiq Khan

0:02:13 > 0:02:17to tell him how unhappy I am about air pollution in London.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19I wrote two proposals.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22The first one is to see more electric cars on the road,

0:02:22 > 0:02:25and the second one is to get factories to stop using

0:02:25 > 0:02:26harmful chemicals.

0:02:26 > 0:02:30She's sending it to City Hall, where the Mayor of London works.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34Newsround contacted Sadiq Khan about her concerns.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37His office told us that the Mayor was doing everything in his power

0:02:37 > 0:02:40to tackle London's toxic air.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43Creating 12 low emission bus zones, phasing out diesel taxis,

0:02:43 > 0:02:47checking the quality of air around schools, and alerting people

0:02:47 > 0:02:53when air quality falls below a certain standard.

0:02:53 > 0:02:58They say the Mayor now wants the Government to introduce

0:02:58 > 0:03:01a special fund to help people replace high emission vehicles.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04The Government has promised to give £3.5 billion to help

0:03:04 > 0:03:06improve air quality.
