0:01:25 > 0:01:28We've been taking a look at the exhausts of cars.
0:01:28 > 0:01:32Can you tell us what this means, and is it really harmful?
0:01:32 > 0:01:35Well, I can see here that you've got pollution coming out
0:01:35 > 0:01:36of the exhausts of vehicles.
0:01:36 > 0:01:40That's mainly going to be nitrogen dioxide and very small particles,
0:01:40 > 0:01:44both of which can be damaging for your health.
0:01:44 > 0:01:46It's not a worry for most of us who are healthy,
0:01:46 > 0:01:49but if you have an existing problem with your breathing,
0:01:49 > 0:01:51like many old people do, or if you have asthma,
0:01:51 > 0:01:55then both of those things can be affected by air pollution.
0:01:55 > 0:01:58The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, says the problem is unacceptable,
0:01:58 > 0:02:00and has promised to help get pollution levels down
0:02:00 > 0:02:06to World Health Organization standards by 2030.
0:02:06 > 0:02:09But Hadil wants more done more quickly.
0:02:09 > 0:02:13I'm writing this letter to the London mayor Sadiq Khan
0:02:13 > 0:02:17to tell him how unhappy I am about air pollution in London.
0:02:17 > 0:02:19I wrote two proposals.
0:02:19 > 0:02:22The first one is to see more electric cars on the road,
0:02:22 > 0:02:25and the second one is to get factories to stop using
0:02:25 > 0:02:26harmful chemicals.
0:02:26 > 0:02:30She's sending it to City Hall, where the Mayor of London works.
0:02:30 > 0:02:34Newsround contacted Sadiq Khan about her concerns.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37His office told us that the Mayor was doing everything in his power
0:02:37 > 0:02:40to tackle London's toxic air.
0:02:40 > 0:02:43Creating 12 low emission bus zones, phasing out diesel taxis,
0:02:43 > 0:02:47checking the quality of air around schools, and alerting people
0:02:47 > 0:02:53when air quality falls below a certain standard.
0:02:53 > 0:02:58They say the Mayor now wants the Government to introduce
0:02:58 > 0:03:01a special fund to help people replace high emission vehicles.
0:03:01 > 0:03:04The Government has promised to give £3.5 billion to help
0:03:04 > 0:03:06improve air quality.
0:03:06 > 0:03:10It plans to end the sale of diesel and petrol cars and vans by 2040,
0:03:10 > 0:03:13and is publishing a clean air strategy, setting out further steps
0:03:13 > 0:03:19to tackle air pollution.
