0:00:02 > 0:00:04Good morning, peeps!
0:00:04 > 0:00:07Martin here, with all the stories you need this Wednesday.
0:00:07 > 0:00:09Coming up in the next few minutes...
0:00:09 > 0:00:16We find out how emojis are chosen.
0:00:16 > 0:00:18The former rugby captain becoming a referee.
0:00:18 > 0:00:23And who knew crocodiles could be cute!
0:00:28 > 0:00:32Here at Newsround we do love an emoji, but have you ever wondered
0:00:32 > 0:00:36who decides which ones you get to have on your phone or tablet?
0:00:36 > 0:00:41We went to meet one woman who's got that very job.
0:00:41 > 0:00:44My name is Jennifer.
0:00:44 > 0:00:47I am part of a group that helps to decide the
0:00:47 > 0:00:48world's emojis.
0:00:48 > 0:00:50What are the things in our world that are
0:00:50 > 0:00:52important enough to be an emoji?
0:00:52 > 0:00:58So, are dinosaurs important enough to be an emoji?
0:00:58 > 0:01:03What kind of dinosaurs?
0:01:03 > 0:01:05A certain emoji, like a mosquito emoji, is
0:01:05 > 0:01:08really important, because it allows you to communicate the idea of
0:01:08 > 0:01:10danger without having to learn every single language, because everybody
0:01:10 > 0:01:11recognises mosquitoes.
0:01:11 > 0:01:14Some people think that people use emojis because they are really lazy.
0:01:14 > 0:01:17But if you think about it, the reason people love emojis so
0:01:17 > 0:01:20much is that it's a really fast, simple way to communicate ideas, and
0:01:20 > 0:01:22allows people who don't speak the same language
0:01:22 > 0:01:28to communicate using emojis. Sometimes emoji are really clear.
0:01:28 > 0:01:31But sometimes it can be really confusing what the other
0:01:31 > 0:01:34person means. And some people don't like that.
0:01:34 > 0:01:38And other people think that's what makes emojis fun.
0:01:38 > 0:01:40In different cultures people can give
0:01:40 > 0:01:45the emoji their own meaning.
0:01:45 > 0:01:47In Japanese, this is how you say thank you.
0:01:47 > 0:01:49But in America, and sometimes the West, this looks like
0:01:49 > 0:01:50people praying.
0:01:50 > 0:01:53And some people actually think it looks like a high five.
0:01:53 > 0:01:55So you can actually have very different
0:01:55 > 0:02:03interpretations of the different emojis.
0:02:03 > 0:02:05A Martin emoji is coming soon!
0:02:05 > 0:02:07Imagine having a picture you've drawn sent all around the world.
0:02:07 > 0:02:08Pretty cool, right?
0:02:08 > 0:02:11Well, I met up with 10-year-old Ted, whose drawing got chosen to be
0:02:11 > 0:02:14a postage stamp by Prince Charles, and is ready for all
0:02:14 > 0:02:15your Christmas cards!
0:02:15 > 0:02:18Ted, this is a pretty important stamp, isn't it?
0:02:18 > 0:02:20This is my stamp design.
0:02:20 > 0:02:23It the first class stamp for this year.
0:02:23 > 0:02:26Wait a minute - this Christmas stamp is going over the world?
0:02:26 > 0:02:28Hopefully, yeah.
0:02:28 > 0:02:29How do you feel about that?
0:02:29 > 0:02:30Well, it's pretty overwhelming.
0:02:30 > 0:02:33Kind of weird to think this is going to be a stamp now,
0:02:33 > 0:02:35and people can buy this.
0:02:35 > 0:02:37How did you find out you had won the competition?
0:02:37 > 0:02:40The head teacher called me to her office.
0:02:40 > 0:02:42I was sort of wondering if I had done something
0:02:42 > 0:02:44wrong, although I couldn't think of anything.
0:02:44 > 0:02:47But when I got there, she was standing in the middle of the
0:02:47 > 0:02:49office smiling at me, and then she told me.
0:02:49 > 0:02:52And I didn't speak of approximately half an hour
0:02:52 > 0:02:53after that.
0:02:53 > 0:02:55Prince Charles basically picked your stamp out of thousands
0:02:55 > 0:02:59of others. What was it like meeting him?
0:02:59 > 0:03:02He just doesn't seem to me like royalty.
0:03:02 > 0:03:05He seems like the kind of guy you'd just be friends with.
0:03:05 > 0:03:07He asked me how I came up with the design.
0:03:07 > 0:03:10How did you come with it? What were you thinking?
0:03:10 > 0:03:11What was your inspiration?
0:03:11 > 0:03:14I was kind of thinking about mainly what it would look like stamp size.
0:03:14 > 0:03:17If it was too detailed you wouldn't be able to
0:03:17 > 0:03:18make any of that out.
0:03:18 > 0:03:20So I tried to keep it pretty simple.
0:03:20 > 0:03:21I couldn't have several reindeer. Wouldn't fit.
0:03:21 > 0:03:23I thought about Father Christmas, because he delivers
0:03:23 > 0:03:25presents to everyone, and Christmas is about sharing
0:03:25 > 0:03:29and being nice to other people.
0:03:29 > 0:03:32Irish rugby union referee Joy Neville will become the first
0:03:32 > 0:03:35woman to take charge of a European professional
0:03:35 > 0:03:38club fixture next month.
0:03:38 > 0:03:43She's already acted as an assistant referee, and now
0:03:43 > 0:03:46the former Ireland captain will take the whistle for a match
0:03:46 > 0:03:49in the Challenge Cup next month.
0:03:49 > 0:03:51Have you ever fancied walking on water?
0:03:51 > 0:03:53Yes? No?
0:03:53 > 0:03:56Well, check this out.
0:03:56 > 0:04:00This is the world's longest floating walkway.
0:04:00 > 0:04:03And it's just opened up in China.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06It's over three miles long and is made up of more than
0:04:06 > 0:04:11220,000 plastic blocks.
0:04:11 > 0:04:14They move up and down as you walk along it,
0:04:14 > 0:04:17making it feel like you're surfing.
0:04:17 > 0:04:20But don't worry, guys, you want to float away,
0:04:20 > 0:04:27as there are anchors under the water to keep the walkway in place.
0:04:27 > 0:04:29So, can you guess what shape it is supposed to be?
0:04:29 > 0:04:31Anyone?
0:04:31 > 0:04:33It's a butterfly!
0:04:33 > 0:04:38Pretty cool, hey?
0:04:38 > 0:04:41Now, sheep may be quite a bit cleverer than we thought.
0:04:41 > 0:04:45New research shows they can learn to recognise human faces.
0:04:45 > 0:04:48A group of Welsh mountain sheep had special training,
0:04:48 > 0:04:52which meant they could pick out the faces of famous people
0:04:52 > 0:04:55like Harry Potter actor Emma Watson and former US
0:04:55 > 0:04:57President Barack Obama.
0:04:57 > 0:05:00Researchers say it shows sheep can recognise faces
0:05:00 > 0:05:05just like people can.
0:05:05 > 0:05:09Check out these baby crocodiles hatching in America.
0:05:09 > 0:05:12They were born at San Diego Zoo in California.
0:05:12 > 0:05:15They're West African dwarf crocodiles -
0:05:15 > 0:05:19that's the smallest known species of crocodile.
0:05:19 > 0:05:26Three managed to hatch on their own but one needed help.
0:05:26 > 0:05:30Just enough time to tell you to head online, where you can see the stars
0:05:30 > 0:05:32confirmed to take part in this year's special Christmas edition
0:05:32 > 0:05:39of Strictly Come Dancing.
0:05:39 > 0:05:45They include Kimberley Walsh and Robbie Savage. And meet the women
0:05:45 > 0:05:48whose idea it was to include an emoji.
0:05:48 > 0:05:50Thanks for watching. Have a great day at school.
0:05:50 > 0:05:55Whitney's back later.
0:05:55 > 0:06:00See you later. Bye-bye.
