0:00:55 > 0:00:58We opened late on Friday night and people have been coming ever

0:00:58 > 0:00:59since then.

0:00:59 > 0:01:00The community spirit has been great.

0:01:00 > 0:01:04Children have been bringing their own toys

0:01:04 > 0:01:07for other children to play with, families have been been bringing

0:01:07 > 0:01:08food for other people to eat.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10It has been a tremendous community effort.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12What's happened your house?

0:01:12 > 0:01:15The water has just went over the radiators,

0:01:15 > 0:01:23it has been making the couches float and we had all of the tables

0:01:23 > 0:01:28floating and it's just devastating.

0:01:28 > 0:01:32What is it like to see all this here?

0:01:32 > 0:01:37It's just really satisfying that people are actually helping us and

0:01:37 > 0:01:44the community, it's really great.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47In the kitchen, if you take a look over here, lots of warm food being

0:01:47 > 0:01:49cooked right now to give to people.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52A local company has just called to say they're going give free pizza

0:01:52 > 0:01:53as well.

0:01:53 > 0:01:59Take a look at this, the most important thing - lots of cake!

0:01:59 > 0:02:00What have you been doing?

0:02:00 > 0:02:06I've been trying to help my brother because he's been flooded

0:02:06 > 0:02:09out and he had to get wellies so we are able to help him.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12Your house is OK, but you're telling me your friends'

0:02:12 > 0:02:13houses aren't OK, are they?

0:02:13 > 0:02:13No.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15What's it like for them?

0:02:15 > 0:02:17It's really devastating because they've had to leave most

0:02:17 > 0:02:19of their things behind.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21How nice is it to come here to help out?

0:02:21 > 0:02:24It's really nice because everyone is trying their hardest to help

0:02:24 > 0:02:28other people, even if they haven't got flooded, they're trying to

0:02:28 > 0:02:34help people that have, trying to keep them safe and everything.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37And it's not just people who have been rescued.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40This dog was carried to safety from deep water in Corbridge

0:02:40 > 0:02:41in Northumberland.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44And this donkey was rescued from thick mud and deep water

0:02:44 > 0:02:45in Kerry in Ireland.

0:02:45 > 0:02:51Volunteers used a small boat and a life belt to drag him to safety.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53And have you or your school been affected by flooding?

0:02:53 > 0:02:57Send your stories into our website.

0:02:59 > 0:03:03In other news, schools are closed in the capital of China,

0:03:03 > 0:03:04Beijing, because of heavy smog.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07The government's put out its highest red alert for the next few days.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10Many vehicles have also been banned from the roads.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13Now, have you written your Christmas list yet?

0:03:13 > 0:03:16Well, one animal lover got a big surprise when his mum found

0:03:16 > 0:03:19a small lizard in her veggies!

0:03:19 > 0:03:20And he gets to keep it.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22Martin went to meet him.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Animal lover Charlie is not short of pets - Max the dog, Snowy the

0:03:25 > 0:03:35rabbit, turtles Dippy and Dipper, Dougie Feathers and a pet fish, too.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39But last year, all Charlie really wanted for Christmas was a lizard.

0:03:39 > 0:03:40Charlie was bothering me to death.

0:03:40 > 0:03:44He wanted a gecko for Christmas.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46I said no chance, we have that many animals in this

0:03:46 > 0:03:50house, we're not having any more!

0:03:50 > 0:03:54I got the veg out and I thought I would do it on Christmas Eve,

0:03:54 > 0:03:57chopping my veg up at the sink and as I was chopping it up

0:03:57 > 0:03:59and putting it into the saucepan, there was a lizard.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02My husband was sat there, so I shouted "Greg, there's

0:04:02 > 0:04:03a lizard on top of this broccoli!"

0:04:03 > 0:04:04Here he is.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06Introduce me to this little guy.

0:04:06 > 0:04:08His name is Brock because my mum found him in broccoli.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11She ran into the kitchen with a sandwich box,

0:04:11 > 0:04:14so when I want to see what it was, to my surprise, it was a gecko.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17The RSPCA had said they couldn't pick it up on Christmas Day,

0:04:17 > 0:04:21but when I heard them say they couldn't pick it up, I thought they

0:04:21 > 0:04:22were going to take it away.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25They said that if we got the right stuff and the right crickets,

0:04:25 > 0:04:31that we could keep the lizard.

0:04:31 > 0:04:35Geckos are not found in cold climates like here in the UK.

0:04:35 > 0:04:41As reptiles, they can't produce their own body

0:04:41 > 0:04:46heat, so they prefer to live in warm countries like Spain for example.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49It's very important to do the research when it comes to reptiles.

0:04:49 > 0:04:54Brock is a very lucky gecko.

0:04:54 > 0:04:55Charlie has done his research.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58You've got to think of the type of climate they come from.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00You've also got to think of their food source.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03Some geckos eat fruit-based things, some are insect eaters, so you need

0:05:03 > 0:05:07to know what type you've got.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10Well, Charlie, Brock looks as if he's doing well.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12You definitely got your Christmas wish last year.

0:05:12 > 0:05:14What's your big wish this year?

0:05:14 > 0:05:17Well, Martin, I'm looking for something a bit bigger this year.

0:05:17 > 0:05:18MUM: Charlie!

0:05:18 > 0:05:25ELEPHANT TRUMPETS.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27There wasn't really an elephant in the kitchen!

0:05:27 > 0:05:30But it is time to open door eight on the Newsround advent calendar,

0:05:30 > 0:05:31which is on our website.

0:05:31 > 0:05:36This week it's your best jokes, so keep the videos coming in.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41What do you call a snowman with no face?

0:05:41 > 0:05:49Snow-face.

0:05:49 > 0:05:51OK, that's all from me and the Newsround team for now.

0:05:51 > 0:05:53Join us back at 4:20pm

0:05:53 > 0:05:55when we'll have much more on the flooding.

0:05:55 > 0:05:58Bye!
