0:00:12 > 0:00:14Hi, Martin here.
0:00:14 > 0:00:17Today is Safer Internet Day - and all day online and on TV -
0:00:17 > 0:00:20we've been asking what you think about social media and online
0:00:20 > 0:00:21bullying.
0:00:21 > 0:00:24So, how safe do you feel when you're using a phone or tablet?
0:00:24 > 0:00:27In a survey carried out for Newsround, more than one in five
0:00:27 > 0:00:3010-12 year olds who use social media said they'd been trolled
0:00:30 > 0:00:34or bullied online.
0:00:34 > 0:00:38You've told us bullying is something you're really worried about.
0:00:38 > 0:00:41Online, there are our Top Tips on what to do
0:00:41 > 0:00:44if you're being bullied.
0:00:44 > 0:00:47Plus loads more advice and information.
0:00:47 > 0:00:50Leah went to meet some year sevens in Sunderland
0:00:50 > 0:00:51to hear their experiences.
0:00:51 > 0:00:53Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
0:00:53 > 0:00:57Some of the world's most successful online companies.
0:00:57 > 0:00:59So for those of you who use social networks, what experience have
0:00:59 > 0:01:04you had on them, both good and bad?
0:01:04 > 0:01:07I have come along to this school in the north-east of England
0:01:07 > 0:01:09to find out.
0:01:09 > 0:01:12Well, I use Instagram, because it is really easy to get
0:01:12 > 0:01:15in touch with your friends.
0:01:15 > 0:01:20I have YouTube to just research videos and watch videos and stuff.
0:01:20 > 0:01:25The main ones I like are Instagram, Facebook and things like that.
0:01:25 > 0:01:27I signed up to Facebook because I wanted to talk
0:01:27 > 0:01:30to my friends outside of school if I couldn't see them in person.
0:01:30 > 0:01:36I looked at Instagram because it is kind of what everyone does.
0:01:36 > 0:01:40A Newsround survey found a massive 78% of 10-to-12-year-olds
0:01:40 > 0:01:43have a social media account, despite rules saying you have to be
0:01:43 > 0:01:4913 or over to sign up.
0:01:49 > 0:01:52Even though the survey found more than 70% of you are happy
0:01:52 > 0:01:55using social networking sites, it also found that many of you don't
0:01:55 > 0:02:00always have a great time.
0:02:00 > 0:02:02More than one in five 10-to-12-year-olds with a social
0:02:02 > 0:02:08media account said they had been bullied or trolled online.
0:02:08 > 0:02:11I have experienced it, but it has been in private messages
0:02:11 > 0:02:15and I showed my mum.
0:02:15 > 0:02:17I said I was leaving it.
0:02:17 > 0:02:20One of my friends has been quite badly bullied on a social network
0:02:20 > 0:02:23and it affected her quite bad, she has never been on it since.
0:02:23 > 0:02:27One of my friends had a YouTube account and I looked on the comments
0:02:27 > 0:02:33and I saw swearing, abusive language.
0:02:33 > 0:02:36I have never really seen any bullying going on and I have
0:02:36 > 0:02:38never been bullied.
0:02:38 > 0:02:42I haven't seen anyone but I know it can happen and it can be really
0:02:42 > 0:02:46bad, it can really hurt people.
0:02:46 > 0:02:48Are the social networks doing enough themselves to prevent bullying
0:02:48 > 0:02:51on their sites?
0:02:51 > 0:02:53They all have places where you can report bullying.
0:02:53 > 0:02:56But more than a third of you said the companies don't take
0:02:56 > 0:03:00bullying seriously enough.
0:03:01 > 0:03:05So what do the social media companies have to say?
0:03:05 > 0:03:08Snapchat wouldn't do an interview nor would Instagram,
0:03:08 > 0:03:11But they did tell us "Keeping the community safe on Instagram
0:03:11 > 0:03:14is our number one priority and we spend a lot of time
0:03:14 > 0:03:16thinking about it".
0:03:16 > 0:03:18YouTube also wouldn't talk but stressed it's for 13s and over.
0:03:18 > 0:03:21And Facebook agreed to do an interview as long as we didn't
0:03:21 > 0:03:23ask them about under 13s, which of course
0:03:23 > 0:03:28we wouldn't agree to.
0:03:28 > 0:03:31Well, we've been asking you all day for your ideas about how to make
0:03:31 > 0:03:34the online world a safer and friendlier place.
0:03:34 > 0:03:36Lots of you have got in touch with your suggestions.
0:03:36 > 0:03:38Sonia from Bristol says tell your parents if you're
0:03:38 > 0:03:40being bullied because if someone types something bad,
0:03:40 > 0:03:43they will sort it out.
0:03:43 > 0:03:46Jess from Bournemouth would look closer at the comments
0:03:46 > 0:03:48on her friends' pictures to make sure no-one is being mean.
0:03:48 > 0:03:52Great advice, guys, thanks.
0:03:52 > 0:03:57I went out to see what advice children in Manchester can give.
0:03:57 > 0:04:00If I was giving advice to someone that had just started social media,
0:04:00 > 0:04:02I would say to put it on private.
0:04:02 > 0:04:06My advice is to not let bullies get you down,
0:04:06 > 0:04:10tell the parent, and if it is that bad tell the police.
0:04:10 > 0:04:13I think that social media sites could make the privacy better
0:04:13 > 0:04:17by including a tutorial on how to put privacy through.
0:04:17 > 0:04:20Don't add people you don't know.
0:04:20 > 0:04:23I'm quite open with my mum and dad about everything I do
0:04:23 > 0:04:25on social networking sites.
0:04:25 > 0:04:28I tell them everything that's going on and if there's ever any
0:04:28 > 0:04:35problems I go to them straight away and they can help me
0:04:35 > 0:04:39help me with everything.
0:04:39 > 0:04:41My advice would to just be nice to people
0:04:41 > 0:04:44because you wouldn't want that happening to you and it's not nice
0:04:44 > 0:04:46doing hurtful things.
0:04:46 > 0:04:48And go online to see Tim Peake's amazing lightning shots
0:04:48 > 0:04:51from the International Space Station.
0:04:51 > 0:04:55Ricky's back tomorrow, so don't miss Newsround.
