0:00:12 > 0:00:14Good morning, guys, Jenny here with your Tuesday Newsround.

0:00:14 > 0:00:17First up, we're talking about homework and the school that

0:00:17 > 0:00:18does it differently.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21More than nine in ten schools in the UK set homework,

0:00:21 > 0:00:23but some people don't think students in primary school

0:00:23 > 0:00:25should be doing any.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27I went to visit one school that's swapped spellings and sums

0:00:27 > 0:00:31for challenges of a different kind.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33I went on a conker walk.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35I fit my entire body through a piece of A4 paper.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37I designed my own board game.

0:00:37 > 0:00:38I made a cake from scratch.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41These might sound like fun things you do on a weekend, but

0:00:41 > 0:00:45they were actually homework tasks, set by the headteacher at this

0:00:45 > 0:00:48primary school in Yorkshire, where they can pick different

0:00:48 > 0:00:50activities from a grid.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53We used to do the normal English and maths and project-based, but we

0:00:53 > 0:00:59just realised it wasn't working.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02So we looked at changing ours to make it far more creative.

0:01:02 > 0:01:12In the UK, the government says it's up to headteachers to decide

0:01:14 > 0:01:17whether or not to set homework, so what did the children

0:01:17 > 0:01:19at the school think of the challenges that they

0:01:19 > 0:01:20are being set?

0:01:20 > 0:01:24I can choose what I want to do, and it's a great way to learn.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26I think that all children should do it this way.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28Now it's just so much more flexible and stress-free.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31I think it doesn't really get you prepared for high

0:01:31 > 0:01:33school, where you get a lot more homework.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36Also, you might have a lot of brothers or sisters like me.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38That means they have to do the same things as well.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41I'd say my mum isn't as stressed as she used to be.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43Because she used to get really annoyed if I didn't

0:01:43 > 0:01:45do any of my homework.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48I don't think I'm missing out because I'm still doing the work

0:01:48 > 0:01:52at school that I was doing at home.

0:01:52 > 0:01:54I went to see their new style of homework for myself.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57Meet Pippa, she chose to make biscuits with her mum.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00So what is it like doing things like baking for your homework?

0:02:00 > 0:02:05In year one, we had to do stuff like quite hard homework

0:02:05 > 0:02:08and it was a bit boring.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10But this time it's still to do with learning,

0:02:10 > 0:02:12it's just a bit more fun.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15And we are covering maths with the ingredients,

0:02:15 > 0:02:18and we're covering reading with the recipe, aren't we?

0:02:18 > 0:02:21But it's a much more fun way of doing it.

0:02:21 > 0:02:28Now I get to do a lot of cool stuff with my family and I've

0:02:28 > 0:02:29got a lot more time.

0:02:29 > 0:02:35Time for tasting.

0:02:35 > 0:02:36Are they good?

0:02:36 > 0:02:40Yeah.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42Loads of ideas there but do you think these

0:02:42 > 0:02:44are the right thing to learn?

0:02:44 > 0:02:47We want to know what you would set as homework if you were in charge.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49Traditional spellings and sums or other activities?

0:02:49 > 0:02:54Get on over to Newsround online and have your say.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56Can you feel that chill in the air?

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Well, freezing weather has gripped most of Europe,

0:02:59 > 0:03:01with heavy snow causing big problems for roads and trains

0:03:01 > 0:03:03all over the continent.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06But where has this extreme weather come from, and more importantly

0:03:06 > 0:03:08is it heading our way?

0:03:08 > 0:03:11Weatherman Simon King has got all the info for us.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18It's been bitterly cold across Europe over the last few days

0:03:18 > 0:03:21or so, we've had lots and lots of snow, and look

0:03:21 > 0:03:22at these temperatures.

0:03:22 > 0:03:27-30 degrees in Moscow, that's well colder than your freezer at home.

0:03:27 > 0:03:31Even down towards the Mediterranean, -3 degrees here.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33In the UK, it's been relatively mild.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36Our turn will come later on this week.

0:03:36 > 0:03:37Where's it all coming from?

0:03:37 > 0:03:40The Arctic is here, you can see the blue extending all the way down

0:03:40 > 0:03:43towards Italy and Greece, that brought the cold weather.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46If you look at the UK now, look at it turning blue.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48Our weather is going to come from the north-west but Arctic air

0:03:48 > 0:03:50is going to be with us for Thursday.

0:03:50 > 0:03:54Don't dust off your sledges just yet, it's going to be a cold day

0:03:54 > 0:03:58and there is the risk of snow but still some details uncertain.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02It was a big night at the Fifa awards last night.

0:04:02 > 0:04:04They're the group that run international football.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07There was good news for Leicester as their manager Claudio Ranieri won

0:04:07 > 0:04:09the Coach of the Year award.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11That's after he led the Foxes to that memorable

0:04:11 > 0:04:15Championship title last year.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17And the big award, Player of the Year, went to,

0:04:17 > 0:04:19who else, Cristiano Ronaldo.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22He's had an amazing season after leading Portugal

0:04:22 > 0:04:25to the European Championship and won the Champions League

0:04:25 > 0:04:29and Club World Cup with Real Madrid.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33Check out these chimpanzees dipping and sipping.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36For the first time experts have managed to film chimpanzees making

0:04:36 > 0:04:39straws to drink water.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41Scientists in the Ivory Coast in Africa shot the footage

0:04:41 > 0:04:45which shows the chimps making special water-dipping sticks

0:04:45 > 0:04:51by chewing the ends to turn it into a soft, absorbent brush.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54That's all from us for now, Newsround's back right here at 8.15.

0:04:54 > 0:04:55Bye!

0:05:03 > 0:05:06How many Blue Peter presenters does it take to change a light bulb?

0:05:06 > 0:05:07No, that doesn't really work.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10Why did the Blue Peter presenter cross the road?

0:05:10 > 0:05:12Er...to get closer to you?
