:00:31. > :00:33.nurses and firefighters, refused to go to work as a form of protest.
:00:34. > :00:38.It's the biggest argument over pay that the current Government has ever
:00:39. > :00:44.faced and it?s affected services across England,
:00:45. > :00:58.Strikers when workers agree not to work free specific period of time to
:00:59. > :01:02.protest about something that they think is unfair at their work. They
:01:03. > :01:05.think politicians will then listen carefully to what they want.
:01:06. > :01:13.Teachers think they are having to work too hard to be able to do
:01:14. > :01:17.things properly. The support staff are also going on strike because
:01:18. > :01:22.they are not being paid enough. People in the UK have had the right
:01:23. > :01:27.to legally strike the 200 years. The first big strike was held in 1926
:01:28. > :01:32.when nearly all of the UK came to a standstill over a row about the
:01:33. > :01:35.working conditions for coal miners. Since then people have gone on
:01:36. > :01:41.strike over things like pay, working conditions, equal treatment for men
:01:42. > :01:45.and women and job losses. After a series of big protests by miners in
:01:46. > :01:50.the 1980s, the Government introduced new rules to make it harder to
:01:51. > :01:54.strike. Today, the Government say they can't afford to pay what the
:01:55. > :02:00.people on strike are asking for. We can only do what we can afford to do
:02:01. > :02:02.as a country. The only people injured by these strikes are those
:02:03. > :02:08.people that have nothing to do with the dispute whatsoever. It might be
:02:09. > :02:12.an extra day off school for you but for other teachers and the
:02:13. > :02:16.Government the row is expected to continue for longer.
