:00:10. > :00:14.Good afternoon. I have everything you need to know. Here's what is

:00:14. > :00:20.coming up - the Pope resigns. The first Pope to do so for nearly 600

:00:20. > :00:27.years. And the latest on the horsemeat

:00:27. > :00:30.scandal spreading across Europe. You're watching Newsround.

:00:30. > :00:36.First, after nearly eight years in the job, the Pope has announced

:00:36. > :00:39.today that he is resigning as the leader of the Catholic Church. At

:00:39. > :00:47.85 years old, Pope Benedict XVI said he was no longer strong enough

:00:47. > :00:51.to continue. He is the first Pope to resign in nearly 600 years.

:00:52. > :00:56.It is one of the most important jobs in the world. As the most

:00:56. > :01:00.senior person in the Catholic Church, he guides more than one

:01:00. > :01:05.billion people who follow the faith. Pope Benedict XVI has today

:01:05. > :01:08.resigned and will leave the job at the end of this month. His

:01:08. > :01:14.resignation has come as a complete surprise. This is an extraordinary,

:01:14. > :01:23.historic moment in the modern story of the Catholic Church. Nobody had

:01:23. > :01:27.any hint that this moment was coming. He announced at 85, he is

:01:27. > :01:31.too old to continue and doesn't have the strength to carry out his

:01:31. > :01:39.duties. Stepping down as the Pope is a huge deal. He's the first to

:01:39. > :01:45.do so in almost 600 years. I think people are very upset and saddened.

:01:45. > :01:50.Pope John Paul II, as we know went on through thick and thin. This man

:01:50. > :01:56.is a very different character. He requires a lot of silence, a lot of

:01:56. > :02:01.his own space, where as John Paul thrived en masse sieve crowds.

:02:01. > :02:05.Benedict XVI, whose real name is Joseph Ratzinger, became Pope in

:02:06. > :02:10.2005. At 75 he was one of the oldest to take up the post. Based

:02:10. > :02:14.at the Vatican in Rome, his job has been to lead the Catholic Church.

:02:14. > :02:18.In 2010, he visited the UK. Hundreds of thousands of people

:02:18. > :02:23.turned out to welcome him. In December last year, the Pope joined

:02:23. > :02:26.Twitter, sending messages in eight languages to his millions of

:02:27. > :02:32.followers around the world. The Prime Minister, David Cameron,, has

:02:32. > :02:38.said the Pope will be missed by millions. He will step down on

:02:38. > :02:43.February 28td and -- 28th and the process will begin. There's a food

:02:43. > :02:47.scandal which has spread across Europe. After horsemeat was found

:02:47. > :02:54.in Findus lasagne's last week France and Sweden have joined the

:02:54. > :02:57.UK in withdrawing some meat products from their shelves.

:02:57. > :03:05.What does the scandal tell us about the food we eat, where it comes

:03:05. > :03:10.from and how it gets here? Horsemeat found in burgers sold in

:03:10. > :03:16.British and Irish supermarkets... It has been going off for a month.

:03:17. > :03:22.Since traces of horse DNA were found, things got more serious when

:03:22. > :03:26.some Findus lasagnes sold here were found to contain 100% horsemeat.

:03:26. > :03:31.Our food takes a long and complicated journey through many

:03:31. > :03:35.countries, which explains some reasons why how the food is

:03:35. > :03:40.contaminated. This is what is thought to have happen. Findus is

:03:40. > :03:45.Swedish. The meals were made by a French food supplier, not in France,

:03:45. > :03:50.but in a factory in Luxembourg. The meat was brought from a Cypriot

:03:50. > :03:53.trader. That trader bought frit the Netherlands. It is suspected the

:03:53. > :03:57.meat came from slaughterhouses in Romania. The authoritys there are

:03:57. > :04:01.investigating. There are no plans at the moment to ban imports from

:04:01. > :04:06.the EU, as the Government says there's currently no risk to human

:04:06. > :04:11.health. All the evidence of the products so far is they are safe.

:04:11. > :04:15.They are not as labelled. This is a case of fraud and mis-labelling.

:04:15. > :04:19.There's nothing we have seen so far which represents a health threat.

:04:19. > :04:23.Later today Owen Paterson will update MPs on the latest

:04:23. > :04:29.developments in the scandal spreading across Europe.

:04:29. > :04:32.It has got a lot of you talking F we hear any more about the

:04:32. > :04:37.horsemeat scandal we will let you know later tonight. OK, we will

:04:37. > :04:42.finish with news, the Government wants to make food and nutrition

:04:42. > :04:47.lessons compulsory in schools in England to help improve skills in

:04:47. > :04:51.the kitchen. Do you reckon it is a good idea or do you know enough
