:00:23. > :00:31.Hello. You're watching Newsround with Ore and Nel. Well, he finally

:00:31. > :00:37.did it. Didn't he? And Andy Murray has won the title. He has won his

:00:37. > :00:40.first Grand Slam. It was really good because we obviously want him

:00:40. > :00:45.to win, and he's going to win a lot more Grand Slams.

:00:45. > :00:47.So we thought this summer of sport couldn't get any better, but it has.

:00:47. > :00:50.Andy Murray is the new US Open champion, Britain's first male

:00:50. > :00:58.Grand Slam winner for 76 years. The boy from Dunblane was up

:00:58. > :01:01.against defending champion Novak Djokovic in New York. And after

:01:01. > :01:04.nearly five hours on court, it was Murray who took the trophy.

:01:04. > :01:08.He adds the US Open title to the Olympic title he won in London,

:01:09. > :01:13.finishing off a golden month for Murray.

:01:13. > :01:19.A moment worth its weight in gold. Oh, my goodness. He's gone and done

:01:19. > :01:22.it, and he's done it the hard way. A 76-year wait since Great

:01:22. > :01:27.Britain's last Grand Slam winner, this capped off a great British

:01:27. > :01:31.summer. This incredible sporting summer of 2012 has just got even

:01:31. > :01:36.better. And Murray couldn't have got off to a better start against

:01:36. > :01:39.Novak Djokovic. After winning a nervous first set, Murray took a

:01:39. > :01:43.two-set lead. Murray has broken. We're now in unchartered waters.

:01:43. > :01:48.The British number one is leading a Grand Slam final by two sets to

:01:48. > :01:52.love. The defending champion, though, was not giving up without a

:01:52. > :01:58.fight. And Novak Djokovic levels from two sets down. Novak Djokovic

:01:58. > :02:02.mounted an incredible comeback to go level at two sets all.

:02:02. > :02:06.defending champion, he's asking big questions tonight of the British

:02:06. > :02:11.player. But Andy Murray dug deep and after a four-hour, 54-minute

:02:11. > :02:16.mare aen this, it was this Scot who at the fifth time of asking finally

:02:16. > :02:22.won a Grand Slam final. Forehand return from Djokovic. It's out, and

:02:22. > :02:29.Andy Murray has won the title. Ladies and gentlemen, your 2012 US

:02:29. > :02:30.Open men's champion, Andy Murray. APPLAUSE

:02:30. > :02:34.What a night. Amazing stuff.

:02:34. > :02:36.Just to sum up how amazing an achievement this is, this is the

:02:37. > :02:43.last British man to win any of tennis's four major tournaments.

:02:43. > :02:46.It's Fred Perry, taken in 1936 - 76 years ago.

:02:46. > :02:49.So we should think ourselves lucky - you, your parents, your

:02:49. > :02:53.grandparents and even some of your great grandparents will have never

:02:53. > :03:00.seen a British Grand Slam winner. Let's hear what Murray made of

:03:00. > :03:03.reaching his life-long dream. means the world to me. It's what I

:03:03. > :03:07.have been working towards for, you know, definitely the last sort of

:03:07. > :03:12.ten years of my life. I always wanted to try to win a Grand Slam.

:03:12. > :03:15.Now, these were the scenes in Andy's home town Dunblane. The

:03:15. > :03:20.celebrations went on through the night. Too right.

:03:20. > :03:26.These kids were at a local tennis club near where Murray grew up.

:03:26. > :03:33.Pretty cool. I can't believe he won his first Grand Slam already.

:03:34. > :03:37.amazing. He tried to work his hardest to get to the point he is.

:03:37. > :03:43.It's really good because we obviously want him to win, and he's

:03:43. > :03:46.going to win a lot more Grand Slams than he won. Is he?

:03:46. > :03:48.And there've been loads of messages of support coming in for our Andy

:03:48. > :03:51.today. Including from the Prime Minister,

:03:51. > :03:54.who's obviously been sucked in by Murray Mania, David Cameron wrote

:03:54. > :04:04.on Twitter, "Delighted Andy Murray is continuing a golden summer of

:04:04. > :04:06.

:04:06. > :04:08.sport by winning the US Open, a And Andy's older brother Jamie,

:04:08. > :04:11.also a professional tennis player, said "What a historic night!

:04:11. > :04:14.Tonight Andy achieved his dream. He got the result his talent,

:04:14. > :04:17.dedication and perseverance deserved. So proud of him."

:04:17. > :04:24.Earlier this afternoon, Andy Murray was busy showing off his shiny new

:04:24. > :04:32.trophy. Let's have a look at him in a park in New York just over an

:04:32. > :04:36.hour ago. The question is what's turned him into the champion we all

:04:36. > :04:39.hoped he could be? And what does it mean for him now he's done it? We

:04:39. > :04:42.put those questions to the BBC's Andy Swiss who was watching the

:04:42. > :04:45.match. First of all, he has a new coach, a man called Yvonne Lendl,

:04:45. > :04:49.who was a successful player in the '90s. He's made Andy Murray a lot

:04:49. > :04:52.more tough and aggressive on court. Secondly, there was his victory at

:04:52. > :04:55.the Olympics earlier this summer. That was important because it

:04:55. > :04:59.showed to Andy Murray he could win on the really big stages, and it's

:04:59. > :05:03.given him that confidence to go on and win that first Grand Slam title.

:05:03. > :05:06.What this means is a huge sense of relief for Andy Murray because had

:05:06. > :05:10.he lost again, it would be very painful and difficult for him to

:05:10. > :05:17.come back. Also, it means now there are big expectation of him. Can he

:05:17. > :05:22.challenge the domination of the top But for now, Andy Murray, you

:05:22. > :05:25.suspect, won't be worrying about that. He'll be trying to soak up

:05:26. > :05:29.what has been a brilliant achievement by him.

:05:30. > :05:32.I think we can officially say it now - that really does round off an

:05:32. > :05:36.unforgettable summer of sport. It really does, doesn't it? So many

:05:36. > :05:42.great British sporting heroes have emerged over the last few months.

:05:42. > :05:52.But who was the greatest? Well, the unofficial Newsround Top Five Stars

:05:52. > :06:03.

:06:03. > :06:07.A double gold medallist at this stage is quite incredible. She's

:06:07. > :06:12.got a long career ahead of her, hasn't she?

:06:12. > :06:22.A little bit of history as Sarah Storey equals the modern British

:06:22. > :06:27.

:06:27. > :06:37.Paralympic record with her 11th Mo Farah is going to make it two

:06:37. > :06:43.

:06:43. > :06:53.gold medals for Great Britain - CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:06:53. > :06:55.

:06:55. > :07:01.It's a golden triumph for Andy Bradley Wiggins, the winner of the

:07:01. > :07:05.Tour de France, and it's looking like it's going to be gold today.

:07:05. > :07:08.This gold medal is his seventh medal won in Olympic competition.

:07:08. > :07:10.So great to see Great Britain on top of the world on so many

:07:10. > :07:13.occasions. Controversially, no room on our

:07:13. > :07:17.list for Jessica Ennis or Greg Rutherford, who of course, along

:07:17. > :07:20.with Mo Farah, gave GB those golden moments in the Olympic stadium.

:07:20. > :07:26.But despite their success, the Head Coach at UK Athletics, Charles Van

:07:26. > :07:30.Commenee, has announced he's leaving his job. He'd set Team GB a

:07:31. > :07:34.target of at least eight medals in London, including at least one gold.

:07:34. > :07:38.Instead, the team "only" got six, even though four of them were gold.

:07:38. > :07:44.We find out who'll replace him later in the week.

:07:44. > :07:47.There is SOME non-sporting news today. And the Duke and Duchess of

:07:47. > :07:50.Cambridge have been shown an orchid named after Prince William's Mum on

:07:50. > :07:55.a trip to Singapore. They saw the flower named after Princess Diana

:07:56. > :07:59.when they visited the singapore botanical gardens.

:07:59. > :08:01.Will's and Kate's trip is part of a nine-day tour of South East Asia

:08:02. > :08:05.and the South Pacific to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

:08:05. > :08:08.Now to something a bit more out of this world. Scientists say there

:08:08. > :08:13.could be many more planets out there with life on them than they

:08:13. > :08:16.previously thought. Right. Researchers say new tests have

:08:16. > :08:21.helped them spot planets in far- away solar systems that have the

:08:21. > :08:27.right kind of water levels and conditions to support living beings.

:08:27. > :08:30.Finally, this little guy certainly has the ahhh factor. Check him out.

:08:30. > :08:39.Ahh! There's been loads of mystery

:08:39. > :08:42.surrounding this baby panda at San Diego Zoo in the States. It was

:08:42. > :08:48.born five weeks ago, but since then, no-one's been able to examine it

:08:48. > :08:52.closely enough to see if it's a boy or a girl. We can finally reveal...

:08:52. > :08:55.It's a boy. HE won't be named until he's 100 days old though, as part

:08:55. > :08:57.of ancient Chinese tradition. So that is all we've got time for.
