:00:00. > :00:11.Hi, I'm Martin live with Newsround. On the way today: The new bike
:00:12. > :00:13.helmet that is made using paper. And why Christmas has finally
:00:14. > :00:21.arrived for space station astronauts.
:00:22. > :00:25.First, Manchester United fans will be waking up happy this morning
:00:26. > :00:33.after the team won 2-0 against Swansea yesterday. After three
:00:34. > :00:36.defeats in a row, things were looking a bit worrying but goals
:00:37. > :00:39.from Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck sealed the Reds' first
:00:40. > :00:42.victory of the New Year. Elsewhere, Chelsea travelled to Hull
:00:43. > :00:45.and won 2-0 whilst Sam Allardyce's struggling West Ham got a
:00:46. > :00:55.much-needed win over Cardiff to get them out of the bottom three.
:00:56. > :01:00.There are two Premier League games this afternoon. Newcastle against
:01:01. > :01:18.Manchester City and Liverpool versus Stoke City.
:01:19. > :01:19.Around 300,000 people been affected and many schools and businesses
:01:20. > :01:34.closed after a chemical leaked my daughter is 13 and says she was
:01:35. > :01:39.taking a shower regardless. I told her not to do that because when we
:01:40. > :01:51.turned on our water today it smelt like cough syrup. Now, Christmas
:01:52. > :01:54.might be a distant memory for you guys but not for astronauts at the
:01:55. > :01:58.International Space Station who are just getting their presents now.
:01:59. > :02:01.Gifts for the six astronauts, as well as food and equipment, were
:02:02. > :02:05.sent by NASA on Thursday on the spacecraft Cygnus and they have
:02:06. > :02:08.finally arrived. Next to China, and the big problem
:02:09. > :02:12.facing its major cities. It's smog. Lots of people in China regularly
:02:13. > :02:15.wear facemasks as recent estimates suggest that half a million people
:02:16. > :02:18.die early every year because of conditions related to air pollution.
:02:19. > :02:21.The Chinese government plan to spend ?180 billion on a massive clean-up.
:02:22. > :02:24.Jenny's been looking into it. Imagine having to wear a face mask,
:02:25. > :02:28.like this, just to go to school? It's part of daily life for many
:02:29. > :02:31.children in China, like these twin girls from Beijing. The masks
:02:32. > :02:35.protect them from the air they breathe in. There are good days in
:02:36. > :02:38.China but take a look at one of the many bad ones. A thick grey smog,
:02:39. > :02:46.containing gasses and particles linked to asthma and heart trouble,
:02:47. > :02:48.covers the streets. You can't actually see some of the most
:02:49. > :02:51.damaging pollution. It's called PM 2.5 and involves
:02:52. > :02:55.particles that are microscopically small. This matters because the
:02:56. > :02:58.particles are small enough, not just to get into the lungs, but also into
:02:59. > :03:04.the bloodstream. This kind of pollution is measured by the cubic
:03:05. > :03:11.metre of air. The World Health Organisation sets a maximum limit of
:03:12. > :03:18.25 of these particles in this space. It says we shouldn't breathe more of
:03:19. > :03:28.them within 24 hours. But a level of 200 is routinely reached in many
:03:29. > :03:31.Chinese cities. The Government is trying to tackle
:03:32. > :03:34.the problem by closing coal-burning power stations which are the biggest
:03:35. > :03:37.source of pollution. They're also trying to limit traffic and
:03:38. > :03:41.officials say they're confident they can clean up. But in some cases smog
:03:42. > :03:43.has forced entire cities to close down. The International School of
:03:44. > :03:46.Beijing have taken matters into their own hands by sealing off their
:03:47. > :03:49.playground inside this massive inflatable dome, where the children
:03:50. > :03:52.play breathing filtered air. The Chinese government is banking on
:03:53. > :04:07.green technology for the future but pollution will be a reality there
:04:08. > :04:10.for years to come. All cyclists are advised to wear
:04:11. > :04:15.helmets when they get on their bike. Yours might look a little bit like
:04:16. > :04:18.this. But now a new helmet has been designed and the inside of it is
:04:19. > :04:22.made out of paper. Inventor Anirudha Surabhi studied woodpeckers when he
:04:23. > :04:25.was trying to come up with a new design as their heads take a lot of
:04:26. > :04:29.impact when it pecks. He noticed woodpeckers have a soft structure
:04:30. > :04:31.between their beak and skull and he decided to recreate this within a
:04:32. > :04:35.helmet using paper. That is one layer of honeycomb cells
:04:36. > :04:42.and that is the second layer. You end up with tiny airbags. When you
:04:43. > :04:46.crash they pop and go all the way to the bottom without cracking.
:04:47. > :04:50.The Australian Open gets underway very late tonight, UK time. British
:04:51. > :04:54.number one Andy Murray is hoping he can go all the way in the Grand Slam
:04:55. > :04:58.after making a return following back surgery. Murray will play Go Soeda,
:04:59. > :05:01.who is ranked outside the top 100, in the first round on Tuesday, and
:05:02. > :05:08.defending champion Novak Djokovic says Murray could still be a threat.
:05:09. > :05:12.I'm sure he had a big problem with his back and had the surgery but we
:05:13. > :05:21.practised and played a little bit and he is striking the ball really
:05:22. > :05:27.well. It will take a little bit of time to get into matchplay mode but
:05:28. > :05:31.I'm sure he will be just fine. All today you've been telling us
:05:32. > :05:33.what you think about the new series of The Voice which started last
:05:34. > :05:58.night. Thanks for those comments, guys.
:05:59. > :06:02.That's all from me.
