0:00:45 > 0:00:49In China, not that long ago, most people lived in the countryside,

0:00:49 > 0:00:53looking after their animals and growing their own food.

0:00:58 > 0:01:02Life was hard.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05And people were poor.

0:01:08 > 0:01:12And then, everything started to change.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20Factories sprang up to make things that people all over

0:01:20 > 0:01:24the world wanted to buy.

0:01:25 > 0:01:29And suddenly, millions of people were on the move from

0:01:29 > 0:01:32the countryside to huge new cities.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38Where they could get money by working in the factories.

0:01:40 > 0:01:44But when the adults moved away, they were not allowed

0:01:44 > 0:01:48to take their children with them.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55Millions of them were left behind in the countryside.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03They are now known as the left behind children.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10This is the story of one of them.

0:02:20 > 0:02:24My name is Tang Yuan and I am 11 years old.

0:02:24 > 0:02:28I live here with my grandmother, my brother and two cousins.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30My parents don't live here.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34They work in another city called Chengdu.

0:02:34 > 0:02:40They both work in factories making clothes.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43My parents don't earn much, and they don't get to

0:02:43 > 0:02:46spend much time with us.

0:02:46 > 0:02:52But thanks to their hard work, we are not down and out.

0:03:00 > 0:03:05When Mum and Dad come back to visit, I run to meet them.

0:03:05 > 0:03:09I run a very long way, because I can't wait

0:03:09 > 0:03:13to be close to them.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19What I love most is to go fishing with them.

0:03:19 > 0:03:23On my own, I can only catch one or two fish.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25Three at most.

0:03:25 > 0:03:30But when Mum and Dad are here, we catch lots of fish.

0:03:34 > 0:03:38During Chinese New Year, Mum and Dad visit for longer.

0:03:38 > 0:03:42We set off fireworks to celebrate.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45They start off small with not much light,

0:03:45 > 0:03:51but then they fly high into the sky and explode suddenly.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55They are bright and colourful and very beautiful.

0:04:04 > 0:04:10It's not easy for Mum and Dad to come back to visit us.

0:04:14 > 0:04:20They can only stay for a few days before they have to leave again.

0:04:21 > 0:04:24I wish they could take me with them.

0:04:24 > 0:04:28I don't want to be separated from them.

0:04:28 > 0:04:32I know it's hard for Mum and Dad to earn money.

0:04:32 > 0:04:37I don't want to cause trouble for them, but I miss them so much.

0:04:37 > 0:04:42It's very painful, but I can't do anything about it because I don't

0:04:42 > 0:04:44want to bother them.

0:04:44 > 0:04:48If I call them, I will disturb them.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50I can't do anything but wait.

0:04:50 > 0:04:54I really want them to come back.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01When I grow up, I want to leave here.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04This is my home, I want to do something big.
