:00:00. > :00:12.Good afternoon! You're watching Newsround with me, Leah, this

:00:13. > :00:16.Thursday. Coming up. Hello, this is Chris Hadfield, back

:00:17. > :00:21.from the International Space Station talking to you about living, working

:00:22. > :00:22.and living life in space. And, you tell us your nativity

:00:23. > :00:31.plans. This is Newsround. But first, are you hoping for snow

:00:32. > :00:35.this Christmas? Chances are it's high up on your wish list. But for

:00:36. > :00:38.millions of Syrian refugees, the snow isn't nearly so welcome at this

:00:39. > :00:42.time of year. Over the past year, many families have escaped the

:00:43. > :00:46.fighting in their own country and arrived at refugee camps on the

:00:47. > :00:49.borders. But this week, winter has brought snow, and for the refugees

:00:50. > :00:50.it means a desperate struggle to survive freezing temperatures in

:00:51. > :01:03.makeshift camps. This is the Valley on the board of

:01:04. > :01:10.Syria and Lebanon. Already, in the grip of what could be the harshest

:01:11. > :01:14.winter in a century. Home to more than 800,000 refugees, who have

:01:15. > :01:18.managed to escape the war. Their homes are makeshift shelters. No

:01:19. > :01:23.comfort in these freezing conditions, and it will get even

:01:24. > :01:28.colder in the next few days. Even the close on the washing line are

:01:29. > :01:33.frozen. It has got worse, because we had a very harsh storm, and it is

:01:34. > :01:37.very cold. Many children have no winter clothing, it is a very

:01:38. > :01:42.difficult situation for them, and they need our help. Hundreds of

:01:43. > :01:48.thousands of refugees escaped to places abounding Syria, like

:01:49. > :01:51.Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt. In northern Jordan, authorities

:01:52. > :01:57.installed thousands of caravans, before the rain falling this week,

:01:58. > :02:01.and the flooding it could cause. There are thousands living in tents.

:02:02. > :02:05.Conditions for refugees are hard at the best of times, and weather like

:02:06. > :02:09.this makes things incredibly difficult, but international aid

:02:10. > :02:14.agencies are responding with planeloads of emergency kits,

:02:15. > :02:17.including food and blankets. Whilst life is tough for children living

:02:18. > :02:21.here, they are at least safe and away from the war.

:02:22. > :02:25.Now, from posting YouTube videos about how to brush your teeth in

:02:26. > :02:28.space to singing songs and playing the guitar in zero gravity, Canadian

:02:29. > :02:33.astronaut Chris Hadfield has become a global star. The space traveller

:02:34. > :02:35.is now back on Earth after retiring this year, and he's been talking to

:02:36. > :02:50.Ayshah about his adventures. Thank you so much for joining

:02:51. > :02:55.Newsround, can you tell us what daily life is like in space? It is

:02:56. > :03:00.so much fun to live in weightlessness, to be orbiting the

:03:01. > :03:04.world and flying weightless. You can push off the wall and do 100

:03:05. > :03:08.somersaults, or you can take your spoon and have your food float in

:03:09. > :03:14.front of you. You can fly, it is an incredible experience. What were

:03:15. > :03:17.some of your favourite moments? I watched a huge thunderstorm,

:03:18. > :03:23.hundreds of kilometres long, over Indonesia, with like pink, the most

:03:24. > :03:30.powerful thing I have seen in my whole life, somebody was drawing big

:03:31. > :03:35.strokes of lightning. Whether any times were worried? The only time I

:03:36. > :03:41.felt a rush of the was when I saw a meteorite or not in between the and

:03:42. > :03:48.the world, and if that Fox had been higher, it could have crashed into

:03:49. > :03:52.our spaceship. How do you spend Christmas in space? I was there last

:03:53. > :03:56.Christmas, we took our Christmas stockings and we hung them above the

:03:57. > :04:03.entrance, and we had Christmas food, although it was dehydrated and in

:04:04. > :04:09.individual packages. We did have the most urbanised Turkey and cans of

:04:10. > :04:16.cranberry sauce, we had trifle, rehydrated. We had a Christmas tree,

:04:17. > :04:20.we can get from the ceiling. We all had Christmas presents that we

:04:21. > :04:22.bought for each other. It is special, even for people not living

:04:23. > :04:26.on the planet. So, from Christmas in space to right

:04:27. > :04:29.back down to earth, and you guys are really on the Christmas countdown

:04:30. > :04:32.now. Loads of you have been starring in nativity plays, and you've been

:04:33. > :04:50.telling us about them on the Newsround website.

:04:51. > :04:55.Door number 12 on the Newsround advent calendar is ready for

:04:56. > :04:57.business, so get clicking to see what's there.

:04:58. > :05:02.I'm back at 6:50pm. Bye!
