:00:08. > :00:11.Warnings of winter storms bringing strong winds, snow and flooding.

:00:12. > :00:13.What happened after this boy's kitchen nightmare?

:00:14. > :00:35.And why these guys are celebrating new year today.

:00:36. > :00:38.First up many of you might be waking up to some pretty extreme

:00:39. > :00:43.There are severe weather warnings for much of the UK and snow and ice

:00:44. > :00:49.And in some places along the east coast high tides and strong winds

:00:50. > :00:53.could cause flooding, as I've been finding out.

:00:54. > :00:56.Along the east coast of the country, flood gates have been closed

:00:57. > :01:02.That's when strong winds and high tides happen at the same time

:01:03. > :01:05.causing big problems for coastal areas.

:01:06. > :01:08.In the village of Jaywick, in the southeast of England,

:01:09. > :01:14.Emergency services are getting ready and evacuation centres,

:01:15. > :01:19.We've got exceptionally strong winds, between 40

:01:20. > :01:22.and 50 miles an hour, potentially gusts stronger

:01:23. > :01:24.than that, are going to coincide with the high tide just

:01:25. > :01:27.after lunchtime so that's why we've put in place this

:01:28. > :01:29.operation to evacuate safely the people of Jaywick.

:01:30. > :01:36.In Skegness, in the east of England, soldiers have been

:01:37. > :01:44.And businesses along the seaside are doing all they can to prepare.

:01:45. > :01:47.More wintry weather is expected today with nearly all of the UK

:01:48. > :01:50.with weather warnings for snow, ice, or both.

:01:51. > :02:08.And keep your weather pics or videos coming in, go online now.

:02:09. > :02:16.This video was snow in Glasgow! Look like it was pretty chilly! Thank you

:02:17. > :02:18.for all of those. Keep them coming in.

:02:19. > :02:21.We use energy for all sorts of things in our houses,

:02:22. > :02:25.But in the future we could be getting our power

:02:26. > :02:27.from a brand new energy source - the sea.

:02:28. > :02:29.Martin's being looking into how it works.

:02:30. > :02:32.From giant wind turbines to solar panels, renewable energy is one

:02:33. > :02:34.of the many ways we can use the environment to

:02:35. > :02:43.And now experts say that government should support big plans to build

:02:44. > :02:49.the world's first tidal lagoons here in the UK.

:02:50. > :02:52.Tidal lagoons use the movement of the sea to create power.

:02:53. > :02:54.This would involve building a huge wall in the sea,

:02:55. > :02:59.around five miles long, to create a pool in the middle.

:03:00. > :03:05.Then large machines called turbines would be placed

:03:06. > :03:09.When the sea level is high, and the pool level is low,

:03:10. > :03:11.water will get sucked through the turbine

:03:12. > :03:13.into the pool, creating power as it moves through it.

:03:14. > :03:17.And when the water in the pool is high but the sea level is low,

:03:18. > :03:19.the water will flow back out in the reverse direction,

:03:20. > :03:28.Well, some people are concerned about how it could affect the fish.

:03:29. > :03:31.We're very worried about tidal lagoons because they have

:03:32. > :03:33.the potential to chop up lots of fish.

:03:34. > :03:37.And the positioning of lots of lagoons near the mouth

:03:38. > :03:48.If you look at the cost spread over the entire lifetime,

:03:49. > :03:52.120 years of the project, it comes out at about 30p

:03:53. > :03:59.The first lagoon would be built in Swansea, but the aim could be

:04:00. > :04:04.to build five more off the coasts of Cardiff, Newport, Bridgwater Bay,

:04:05. > :04:11.It looks like the tide is turning on the way we will see our homes

:04:12. > :04:18.If you think I'm two weeks late, you'd be wrong.

:04:19. > :04:21.Some people in Gwaun Valley in Wales go by a different calendar.

:04:22. > :04:25.For them, New Year's Day or Hen Galan is today.

:04:26. > :04:29.A group of school kids there told us how they'll be celebrating.

:04:30. > :04:32.In Gwaun Valley, we're celebrating Hen Galan.

:04:33. > :04:36.We're celebrating New Year's Eve 13 days after everybody else.

:04:37. > :04:40.Because Pope Gregory changed the calendar.

:04:41. > :04:44.We will be going round everybody's houses singing.

:05:31. > :05:33.of Junior Masterchef and got pretty upset when his fish and chip dish

:05:34. > :05:38.After being on the show, Oscar was invited to cook
