:00:12. > :00:14.This is Newsround and this is the Olympic Park, where over the past

:00:14. > :00:20.three weeks we have seen drama, excitement, passion, dreams

:00:20. > :00:24.fulfilled and hopes shattered. For a record third time, London has

:00:24. > :00:33.hosted the Olympic Games, and boy, was it one to remember. So sit

:00:33. > :00:43.tight and relive the greatest sporting event you'll ever see.

:00:43. > :00:46.

:00:46. > :00:51.Great Britain, into the record Chad le Clos is Olympic champion!

:00:51. > :01:01.That is the greatest Olympian in history. That champion becomes a

:01:01. > :01:11.

:01:11. > :01:17.legend! The gold medal is Mexico's! Jamaica have the gold medal again

:01:17. > :01:20.and it is a new world record! you ever seen anything like that?!

:01:20. > :01:26.London 2012 has been the most successful games for Britain for

:01:26. > :01:29.100 years. In Beijing, the team climbed to fourth in the medal

:01:29. > :01:33.table, but over the past couple of weeks, led by the cyclists, Team GB

:01:33. > :01:37.have an amazing third place, with 29 gold medals. Only beaten by

:01:37. > :01:42.China and the USA, countries with much bigger populations.

:01:43. > :01:49.Why have we done so well this time around? Of course, it's down to

:01:49. > :01:52.really talented athletes trying really hard. But, as Joe's been

:01:52. > :01:55.finding out, there's one thing that's really allowed the GB team

:01:55. > :02:02.to concentrate on training and get the best support possible. Money -

:02:02. > :02:09.and lots of it. The London 2012 Games were amazing

:02:09. > :02:18.for Team GB. It's hard to believe then that 16 years ago, Britain

:02:18. > :02:22.only won one gold at the Olympics in Atlanta. Where did this massive

:02:22. > :02:25.improvement come from? Three words. Cold hard cash. Since 1996,

:02:25. > :02:29.millions and millions of pounds have been poured into sport to get

:02:29. > :02:33.our athletes competing with, and beating, the best in the world.

:02:33. > :02:37.Lots of the money came from the National Lottery. It worked too

:02:37. > :02:45.because at the next Games in Sydney, Great Britain won 11 golds, the

:02:45. > :02:49.most for 80 years. And then this happened. The City of London.

:02:49. > :02:55.it was decided seven years ago that London would host the Games, the

:02:55. > :02:57.money invested went through the roof. Over half a billion pounds

:02:57. > :03:02.was pumped into helping our competitors win at both the Beijing

:03:02. > :03:09.Olympics in 2008 and these Games in London. But the money wasn't just

:03:09. > :03:12.given to any sport. Events and athletes that could do well were

:03:12. > :03:18.picked out, and cash was spent on top quality facilities, performance

:03:18. > :03:22.scientists and the very best coaches. That meant that athletes

:03:22. > :03:28.like the cyclists were able to train in places like this, the

:03:28. > :03:31.Manchester Velodrome. The cycling centre where Chris Foy and Victoria

:03:31. > :03:35.Pendleton were given the best sports scientists and coaches in

:03:35. > :03:38.the business to allow them to concentrate on their training and

:03:38. > :03:42.win gold. The pressure is now on to keep the

:03:42. > :03:46.medals coming in the future. But the question is, can Great Britain

:03:46. > :03:50.continue its success into the next Olympics in Rio and beyond? Now we

:03:50. > :04:00.need to make sure that we increase the amount of clubs have edible for

:04:00. > :04:04.people to take up the sport, because if they take -- take it up,

:04:04. > :04:09.there will be future champions, so we have to filter this right down

:04:09. > :04:13.to the chain, go to the grassroots communities and clubs and then keep

:04:13. > :04:16.them sustained. Then we will have a huge legacy after the Games.

:04:16. > :04:24.Apart from the success of the British team, what's the verdict on

:04:24. > :04:26.London 2012? Pretty good. These Games were designed to be different

:04:26. > :04:29.from what had gone before. Temporary venues, recycling and

:04:29. > :04:32.giant, enthusiastic crowds have set the London games apart.

:04:32. > :04:36.It was clear from the opening ceremony, these Olympics Games were

:04:36. > :04:41.going to be different. People around the world agreed the opening

:04:41. > :04:47.ceremony was stylish, surprising, and very, very British. The plan

:04:47. > :04:50.was to host the most environmentally friendly Games ever.

:04:50. > :04:54.The park was designed with local wildlife in mind, with homes for

:04:54. > :04:58.birds, otters and insects all built-in. London was the first

:04:58. > :05:03.Games to recycle rubbish rather than putting it into landfill. And

:05:03. > :05:06.rubbish isn't the only thing being reused. The hockey, basketball and

:05:06. > :05:15.water polo arenas will all be dismantled, their parts recycled

:05:15. > :05:20.elsewhere. Another thing that set London apart were the crowds. A

:05:20. > :05:25.record-breaking 7.4 million people visited Olympic venues across the

:05:25. > :05:28.UK during the Olympic Games. Early problems with empty seats were

:05:28. > :05:32.sorted and by the time the athletics started, the stadium was

:05:32. > :05:35.packed. The Olympic flame has now been put out and the petals of the

:05:35. > :05:40.cauldron taken back by each of the 206 competing countries. Next stop

:05:40. > :05:45.- Rio. No pressure, guys. Most people are agreed that these

:05:45. > :05:48.Olympics have done Britain proud. From the cheerful volunteers, to

:05:48. > :05:52.the huge and vocal crowds and of course, the amazing performances

:05:52. > :05:56.and record medal haul of the British team. Rio will have a lot

:05:56. > :06:06.to live up to in 2016. I'll leave you with some of the British team's

:06:06. > :06:12.

:06:12. > :06:22.It is gold for Bradley Wiggins! pride of Sheffield, the pride of

:06:22. > :06:27.

:06:27. > :06:32.Great Britain, Jessica Ennis is the Jason Kenny is the Olympic sprint

:06:41. > :06:51.style! You are an Olympic champion, Catherine, you are an Olympic
