:00:00. > :00:07.Hi, I'm Ricky with all you need to know this afternoon. Coming up on

:00:08. > :00:14.Newsround: Why scientists want to study kids to find out how they

:00:15. > :00:17.spread the flu. Why being the tallest building is all about what

:00:18. > :00:25.you've got on top. This is Newsround. OK, first up, we all get

:00:26. > :00:29.coughs and colds this time of year but getting the flu can be much

:00:30. > :00:33.worse. For the first time, scientists studying how flu gets

:00:34. > :00:36.passed around, want to hear from the people they say are likely to be

:00:37. > :00:42.spreading the disease the most kids! Here's Leah.

:00:43. > :00:46.Coughing, sneezing, fever and generally feeling under the weather

:00:47. > :00:53.- just some of the signs you could have flu. And while nearly everybody

:00:54. > :00:57.is well again after a few days of flu for people with conditions like

:00:58. > :01:01.diabetes, asthma or for older people it can be more serious. But go back

:01:02. > :01:11.nearly 100 years and flu was a massive killer. In 1918 the Spanish

:01:12. > :01:15.flu virus swept across the world. It was the most serious outbreak of a

:01:16. > :01:18.virus ever. That's why there's been lots of focus on preventing the

:01:19. > :01:28.spread of the flu. And scientists say the biggest spreaders of the

:01:29. > :01:33.virus are children. Children might be less worried about washing their

:01:34. > :01:36.hands, and throwing away their tissues. They might be more likely

:01:37. > :01:40.to sneeze on their buddies. And that's the trouble with flu. It

:01:41. > :01:44.passes very easily from one person to the next so if you bring it into

:01:45. > :01:52.school chances are others will catch it too. Flu is really contagious

:01:53. > :02:00.which means it is spread really easily and it is spread in small

:02:01. > :02:04.drops of fluid. So while the medical experts do their bit to understand

:02:05. > :02:07.how the flu virus gets passed between kids. Doctors are preparing

:02:08. > :02:11.to do battle as we head into the winter - when there's most flu

:02:12. > :02:14.around - and are giving a new type of vaccination. Good news if you

:02:15. > :02:17.really don't like injections - there's new nasal spray version

:02:18. > :02:20.being tried out in Scotland and parts of England - there's not a

:02:21. > :02:23.single needle in sight. Next, international aid has finally

:02:24. > :02:26.started arriving in the Philippines after last week's huge typhoon. A

:02:27. > :02:29.group of UK charities said this afternoon that a special appeal to

:02:30. > :02:32.the public has already raised ? 3 million in just over a day. The

:02:33. > :02:37.President of the Phillipines has said the number of people killed may

:02:38. > :02:40.not be as high as people had first thought. But bad weather and the

:02:41. > :02:44.scale of the damage has made it very difficult to get aid to those who

:02:45. > :02:47.have survived. Next up, what makes the tallest building - the tallest?

:02:48. > :02:50.One World Trade Centre isn't yet finished but the decision to declare

:02:51. > :02:54.it the tallest building in America has been a bit controversial. As

:02:55. > :02:57.I've been finding out, it's all about what you've got on top. For

:02:58. > :03:00.centuries, mankind has reached for the skies, searching for one goal:

:03:01. > :03:08.to build the tallest building on Earth. The title's changed hands

:03:09. > :03:11.plenty of times over the years. . In the space of just one year in

:03:12. > :03:15.America's New York City, first there was The Trump Building then it was

:03:16. > :03:18.The Chrysler building, and later the famous The Empire State building all

:03:19. > :03:24.claimed the title of world's tallest. But in the 1990s, tower

:03:25. > :03:31.designers discovered a little trick that would add a few cheeky metres -

:03:32. > :03:35.a mast! Suddenly, loads of tall towers had a mast on top - to take

:03:36. > :03:39.them that little bit higher! Taipei, Kuala Lumpur, the record was smashed

:03:40. > :03:42.time and again. But some people said it was cheating, and a mast

:03:43. > :03:46.shouldn't be counted in the height. It was such a heated debate - that a

:03:47. > :03:56.team was even set up to decide whether a mast counted or not! The

:03:57. > :04:00.catchily titled Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat are the

:04:01. > :04:05.guys who make the decision - and they've just said that the 125 metre

:04:06. > :04:09.mast that sits here...counts! So the One World Trade Centre might not be

:04:10. > :04:12.the tallest in the world - that s this one, Dubai's Burj Khalifa,

:04:13. > :04:16.nearly a kilometer high - but it's beaten Chicago's Willis Tower -

:04:17. > :04:19.whose masts DON'T count by the way - to become the tallest in

:04:20. > :04:22.America...and it's all thanks to a little old...well big old...mast.

:04:23. > :04:25.Last up. The slam dunk is probably the most impressive move in the

:04:26. > :04:28.whole of basketball, right? Yep until it goes wrong. Legendary

:04:29. > :04:30.American basketball team the Harlem Globetrotters were playing in

:04:31. > :04:33.Honduras last week when... OUCH Don't worry! He wasn't seriously

:04:34. > :04:38.hurt, but William 'Bull' Bullard certainly got a bit of a shock. He

:04:39. > :04:43.got a cut on his forehead but was able to get back on his feet. He had

:04:44. > :04:49.to sit out the rest of the match though. Lucky escape! Just time

:04:50. > :04:53.enough to tell you about a great story on the website about a rescued

:04:54. > :04:55.puppy that's climbed the world's highest mountain! I'm out of time,

:04:56. > :05:00.back at 6.50. Bye.
