:00:20. > :00:23.Hi, guys, the boys are back on set - Ricky and Ore with you for the
:00:23. > :00:27.next eight minutes. You're watching Newsround. We've crammed all of
:00:27. > :00:32.Tuesday's offerings into this bitesize show. This is all to come.
:00:32. > :00:35.Ride along for the next chapter of my American roadtrip.
:00:35. > :00:38.And Nel's been catching up with the stars of this year's Royal Variety
:00:38. > :00:41.Performance. But first, they're supposed to be
:00:41. > :00:46.best places to shop and meet your friends when you're in town, but
:00:46. > :00:49.how buzzing is your high street? More than one in ten town and city
:00:49. > :00:52.centre shops are empty, according a report earlier this year. Shopping
:00:52. > :00:57.expert Mary Portas says so many people are now shopping online and
:00:57. > :01:00.in shopping centres that many high streets are now deserted. She's put
:01:00. > :01:03.together lots of ideas for the Government on how to bring them
:01:03. > :01:09.back to life, including holding market days and more car boot sales.
:01:09. > :01:13.Here's what she said she was hoping for. Whereas the High Street was
:01:14. > :01:18.always just about shopping, that shopping has shifted into new areas.
:01:18. > :01:22.We have the internet, these out-of- town malls. We should look at the
:01:22. > :01:26.high street in a different way. Can you imagine if we put Jim's on to
:01:26. > :01:30.the high street. Places where people go, but they normally go out
:01:30. > :01:33.of town for. Well, earlier I headed down to
:01:33. > :01:36.Altrincham in Greater Manchester to see if their high street is top of
:01:36. > :01:41.the range or out of season. This is the type of high street
:01:41. > :01:45.that Mary Portas is talking about. On this street I have counted about
:01:45. > :01:49.six or seven shops that are abandoned and empty. In the last 30
:01:49. > :01:52.years a lot of shops have closed down, a bit like this one. Not many
:01:52. > :01:56.people are turning up to do their shopping here any more. It is
:01:56. > :02:01.Christmas in a couple of weeks and D Woods expect more people to be
:02:01. > :02:06.here. Altrincham was beautiful at one time. Even with the market. It
:02:06. > :02:10.is losing its heart. supermarkets are selling stuff so
:02:10. > :02:14.cheap, everyone wants to buy it there. It is quite upsetting to
:02:14. > :02:19.walk down the High Street. Altrincham is no different from any
:02:19. > :02:23.other town in the country. There are large out-of-town retailers
:02:23. > :02:27.setting up, p per large shopping on the internet. Fewer people are
:02:27. > :02:31.coming into towns. What are you going to do to get more people back
:02:31. > :02:36.into this town centre? We are looking at getting lots more small
:02:36. > :02:41.to medium-sized independent shops back. We are looking to upgrade the
:02:41. > :02:46.street to get restaurants and bars and leisure opportunities. We have
:02:46. > :02:50.a market that has been here since 1290. So you would come here for a
:02:50. > :02:53.day out. Now, young, funny and clever - the
:02:53. > :02:57.characteristics a lot of people reckon helped Barack Obama become
:02:57. > :03:00.President of the USA. But for many others, it was the colour of his
:03:00. > :03:03.skin that made him stand out the most. He's America's first ever
:03:03. > :03:13.black President and on my roadtrip to the States, I wanted to find out
:03:13. > :03:23.
:03:23. > :03:30.what that means to young people who Over the years, the USA has seen
:03:30. > :03:33.big changes. 60 years ago, black Americans did not have the same
:03:33. > :03:38.rights as white people. In some parts of the country, they were not
:03:38. > :03:42.even allowed to vote, they were not allowed on some buses and many
:03:42. > :03:48.African-Americans were turned away from shops and restaurants. Now it
:03:48. > :03:54.is completely different. America has its first ever black President.
:03:54. > :03:59.It is so overwhelming, so wonderful. Barack Obama has given young black
:03:59. > :04:02.Americans hope. I wanted to head away from the sky could scrapers in
:04:02. > :04:08.Chicago to find out what they think. -- skyscrapers.
:04:08. > :04:17.We're heading to a place called Inglewood outside Chicago. It is
:04:17. > :04:22.one of the poorer areas of the city. How much of a big deal is it for
:04:22. > :04:28.you to have somebody like Barack Obama as your President? Having
:04:28. > :04:35.Barack Obama as President sets a different image for us. Not just
:04:35. > :04:39.for blacks, but also for the upcoming generation. It put small
:04:39. > :04:43.fire in to me to learn and be successful. When I was little, I
:04:43. > :04:46.was always a little kid that said when I wanted -- When I grow up, I
:04:46. > :04:53.want to be the first black President. When he became President,
:04:53. > :04:56.I thought damn! For you can still do it! These guys are all going to
:04:56. > :05:02.college next year and they believe Barack Obama has played an
:05:02. > :05:06.important part in changing their lives. Tomorrow we had to Detroit,
:05:06. > :05:09.hit hard by the country's money problems. There are hundreds of
:05:10. > :05:14.abandoned homes and factories. It is the America you don't usually
:05:14. > :05:17.see. You have been a busy boy!
:05:17. > :05:21.Altrincham one day, Ingle with the next.
:05:21. > :05:24.-- Inglewood. Now to a show that's been going for
:05:24. > :05:28.99 years and is still going strong - the Royal Variety Performance.
:05:28. > :05:31.It's got lots of stars, it's got royalty and we get to see the best
:05:31. > :05:38.bits on TV tomorrow night, but Nel just couldn't wait till then, so
:05:38. > :05:43.she went in search of the stars backstage. I'm at the Lowry in
:05:43. > :05:46.Manchester and although it has been a cold day, we have the best stars
:05:46. > :05:50.coming here to the Royal Variety Show.
:05:50. > :05:58.Some of the biggest names arrived from all over the world. Cee-lo
:05:58. > :06:04.Green flew in from the States just for the show. I feel very
:06:04. > :06:07.privileged to be a part of it. It is a warm and fuzzy feeling.
:06:07. > :06:12.Green is used to the limelight, but it's extra special for one
:06:12. > :06:16.performer, this year's Britains Got Talent winner. What does it feel
:06:16. > :06:22.like to be here? It is a good feeling of accomplishment. To
:06:22. > :06:27.realise you have come to show and now I'm getting the price for that.
:06:27. > :06:30.It is pretty awesome. -- prize. of the added pressures is
:06:30. > :06:36.performing in front of royalty, and this year it was for the Princess
:06:36. > :06:42.Royal. The cast of singing in the rain. But getting royal approval
:06:42. > :06:47.didn't worry everyone. You are magicians. You will be meeting the
:06:48. > :06:52.Princess Royal. Her I guess we are. Are you excited? We are from the
:06:52. > :06:56.USA so we don't really have Princess Royals. We will see how we
:06:56. > :07:01.do. I like meeting everybody so it is nice meeting people from
:07:01. > :07:06.different walks of life. I am looking forward to it. I just hope
:07:06. > :07:10.she enjoys the show like everyone else. Although it she is the anyone
:07:10. > :07:15.who gets in for nothing! Up But the thing that's kept the Royal Variety
:07:15. > :07:20.show going for 99 years is, well, its variety. From what I've seen,
:07:20. > :07:25.we're in for a spectacular show. Last up - had to show you a toilet
:07:25. > :07:33.fit for a king...of bling! It's on display in Japan. Covered in 70,000
:07:33. > :07:36.crystals, it's worth 82,000. You'd have to be pretty flush to buy it!
:07:36. > :07:40.Just before we go, toy shop Hamleys has stopped labelling its toys as
