0:03:19 > 0:03:22This lab measures air quality from all over the UK.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24Hi, David, we've been looking at the exhausts of cars.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27Can you tell us what this means and is it really harmful?

0:03:27 > 0:03:29Well, I can see here that you've got pollution coming out

0:03:29 > 0:03:33of the exhausts of vehicles.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35That is mainly going to be nitrogen dioxide and very small particles,

0:03:35 > 0:03:38both of which can be damaging to your health.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40It's not a worry for most of us who are healthy

0:03:40 > 0:03:43but if you have an existing problem with your breathing,

0:03:43 > 0:03:45like many old people do, or if you have asthma,

0:03:45 > 0:03:49then both of those things can be affected by air pollution.

0:03:49 > 0:03:54The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, says the problem is unacceptable,

0:03:54 > 0:03:56and has promised to help get pollution levels down

0:03:56 > 0:04:00to the World Health Organisation standards by 2030.

0:04:00 > 0:04:01But Hadil once more done, more quickly.

0:04:01 > 0:04:09I'm writing this letter to the London mayor, Sadiq Khan.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15To tell him how unhappy I am about the air pollution in London.

0:04:15 > 0:04:16I wrote two proposals.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19The first one is to see more electric cars on the road

0:04:19 > 0:04:22and the second one is to get factories to stop using

0:04:22 > 0:04:23harmful chemicals.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26She's sending it to City Hall where the Mayor of London works.

0:04:26 > 0:04:27Newsround contacted Sadiq Khan about Hadil's concerns,

0:04:27 > 0:04:30and his office told us that the mayor is...

0:04:34 > 0:04:37Creating 12 low emission bus zones, phasing out diesel taxis,

0:04:37 > 0:04:39checking the quality of air around schools and alerting people

0:04:39 > 0:04:46when air quality falls below a certain standard.

0:04:46 > 0:04:48They say the mayor now once the government to introduce

0:04:48 > 0:04:54a special fund to help people replace high emission vehicles.

0:04:54 > 0:04:57The government has promised to give £3.5 billion to help

0:04:57 > 0:05:03improve air quality.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06It plans to end the sale of diesel and petrol cars and vans by the end

0:05:06 > 0:05:09of 2040 and is publishing a clean air strategy, setting out further

0:05:09 > 0:05:12steps to tackle air pollution.
