:00:00. > :00:06.Hi guys, Leah here with your afternoon Newsround. Loads on the
:00:07. > :00:12.way for you, including the wildlife expert who says trying to save these
:00:13. > :00:15.guys could be a waste of money. And should you give out birthday
:00:16. > :00:23.invitations at school when not everyone's invited.?
:00:24. > :00:27.There are thousands of endangered animals in the world and lots of
:00:28. > :00:32.different charities trying to raise money to save them, but how do you
:00:33. > :00:35.decide which animals to save? Autumnwatch presenter Chris Packham
:00:36. > :00:39.has told Newsround that he thinks we are spending
:00:40. > :00:44.the cute and most popular animals. Here's Martin with the story.
:00:45. > :00:47.When you think about endangered species you might think of popular
:00:48. > :00:53.animals like elephants, tigers or pandas. The panda is one of the most
:00:54. > :00:59.high profile animals under threat, it is even the symbol of the World
:01:00. > :01:03.Wildlife Fund for Nature. There are fewer than 2000 pandas left in the
:01:04. > :01:08.wild but some people say efforts to save them are a waste of money.
:01:09. > :01:12.Autumn watch presenter Chris Packham says a quarter of mammals and 1 % of
:01:13. > :01:15.birds are under threat, so instead of looking after the cuter creatures
:01:16. > :01:25.we should be focussing on protecting habitats for all wildlife. What we
:01:26. > :01:30.really need to do is not pick and choose which ones we are trying to
:01:31. > :01:32.save. We need to try and motivate politicians to understand that
:01:33. > :01:35.looking after all life is really important. There have been lots of
:01:36. > :01:38.attempts to boost panda numbers through breeding programmes in zoos.
:01:39. > :01:46.Recently, they've been trying to get Tian Tian to breed at Edinburgh Zoo
:01:47. > :01:49.with no success yet. When it comes to pandas we have spent millions and
:01:50. > :01:53.millions of dollars trying to make these animals breed in captivity.
:01:54. > :01:57.They have only successfully done this really in China. When they try
:01:58. > :02:01.to release the animal back into the wild, none have survived. Perhaps
:02:02. > :02:05.putting so much energy into breeding these animals might be a waste of
:02:06. > :02:11.money. I'm not saying I do not like the Pandora that we should not try,
:02:12. > :02:15.just that it is too difficult. Not everyone agrees with what Chris has
:02:16. > :02:18.to say. The World Wildlife Fund says protecting a famous animal like the
:02:19. > :02:21.panda is a good way of getting people interested in saving other
:02:22. > :02:25.creatures. And they along with many other wildlife charities are still
:02:26. > :02:28.doing what they can to save them. To India now, where thousands of
:02:29. > :02:31.families are returning to their homes after a huge cyclone swept
:02:32. > :02:34.across the east of the country. 18 people were killed when Cyclone
:02:35. > :02:43.Phailin struck the state of Orissa on Saturday. Winds of up to 125
:02:44. > :02:46.miles an hour flattened many coastal homes, uprooted trees and blocked
:02:47. > :02:48.roads. Indian authorities say the evacuation of nearly one million
:02:49. > :02:53.people into temporary shelters has helped save many people's lives Now
:02:54. > :03:03.the clean up begins after the worst cyclone there for 14 years.
:03:04. > :03:12.Power is gradually being restored and links are being rebuilt. Many
:03:13. > :03:15.people are from her communities along the coast, many of whom have
:03:16. > :03:17.lost their homes. Focus is to rebuild their lives.
:03:18. > :03:20.Yesterday we told you about a head-teacher in Bath who asked
:03:21. > :03:23.parents to avoid bringing party invites into school that didn't
:03:24. > :03:28.include all children in the class. It got you sending LOADS of opinions
:03:29. > :03:32.into our website. Newsround spoke to the head today, who told us it was
:03:33. > :03:37.unkind to leave some children out. He said he wanted the school to make
:03:38. > :03:43.every child feel included. Nel went to find out whether you guys agreed
:03:44. > :03:48.with him. Birthday parties - it can be quite
:03:49. > :03:53.upsetting if your name is not on the invite list. Should you have to
:03:54. > :03:58.invite everybody? And if not, isn't it a bad idea to hand them out at
:03:59. > :04:03.school? I have come to a school to find out what people think. I think
:04:04. > :04:07.they should give them out at home time. If they were handed out in
:04:08. > :04:15.school and you did not get invited you might get upset. I think there
:04:16. > :04:19.should be given out in class because you can have as many as you want.
:04:20. > :04:25.They should be handed out at home. When I did not get one I felt really
:04:26. > :04:30.sad. The only person that could cheer me up was my friends and my
:04:31. > :04:35.family. Me and my family do not celebrate birthdays and I am not
:04:36. > :04:39.worried about invitations and all. It's hard to image life without our
:04:40. > :04:41.mobiles but spare a thought for people living in a village in Mexico
:04:42. > :04:48.They're just decades villagers delivered
:04:49. > :04:56.important messages by loud speaker because telecoms companies said they
:04:57. > :05:00.could not justify a network. I will be back at 6:50pm. Join me
:05:01. > :05:01.then. Goodbye.
