0:00:03 > 0:00:04Hey, guys.

0:00:04 > 0:00:07Martin here with the Friday morning top news stories.

0:00:07 > 0:00:09Coming up:

0:00:09 > 0:00:13British astronaut Tim Peake is getting ready to take

0:00:13 > 0:00:14a walk in space.

0:00:14 > 0:00:19Plus, who's been nominated for a Brit award?

0:00:26 > 0:00:29It's a big day for British astronaut Tim Peake as he prepares

0:00:29 > 0:00:35to do his first ever spacewalk this afternoon.

0:00:35 > 0:00:39He'll be helping to restore power to one part of the station.

0:00:39 > 0:00:43Here's Ayshah with what's going to be happening.

0:00:43 > 0:00:48At around 1255 later today you might be finishing your lunch,

0:00:48 > 0:00:51but somewhere in space Tim Peake will be about to take

0:00:51 > 0:00:53a momentous step.

0:00:53 > 0:00:58He will set for outside the International Space Station

0:00:58 > 0:00:59for his first spacewalk.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02It's a huge moment for any astronaut.

0:01:02 > 0:01:06Spacewalks are the most exciting and challenging thing an astronaut

0:01:06 > 0:01:08does, the hardest thing we do as human beings.

0:01:08 > 0:01:15It is the most hostile environment you can imagine.

0:01:15 > 0:01:16For the next 6 1/2 hours he will be out in space repairing a broken

0:01:16 > 0:01:19power unit on the outside of the station.

0:01:19 > 0:01:24He will be with a fellow astronaut and their every move is guided

0:01:24 > 0:01:26by a team back here on earth.

0:01:26 > 0:01:30Everything down to the order in which tools and equipment

0:01:30 > 0:01:34are attached to their space suits has been carefully planned.

0:01:34 > 0:01:43We have planned in meticulous detail the procedures.

0:01:43 > 0:01:43We've used computer simulations to see exactly where we will go

0:01:43 > 0:01:45and what we will be doing.

0:01:45 > 0:01:50I think it's going to be the most exhilarating feeling imaginable.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53After repairing the unit, his next job will be to connect

0:01:53 > 0:01:57a brand-new cable.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00And all the time, as we'll be whizzing by below them.

0:02:00 > 0:02:04In fact, the ISS orbits earth every 90 minutes so they will do this

0:02:04 > 0:02:11in a cycle of 45 minutes of daylight and 45 minutes of complete darkness.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15At the corner of your eye you're seeing the planet rotating below

0:02:15 > 0:02:17you so how do you stop getting distracted because you have

0:02:17 > 0:02:21the whole universe to look at, but you have to undo screws

0:02:21 > 0:02:23and not drop them?!

0:02:23 > 0:02:34It is another part of Tim's exciting mission in space.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield spent more than 150 days on space

0:02:41 > 0:02:45taking part in two space walks.

0:02:45 > 0:02:50He says they're are a crucial part of life on board the station.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53We'd been training for years to do spacewalks.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55You have to be strong and fit.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58Regular maintenance is required to keep the space station running.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02Unlike a car where you can pull over and call a tow truck,

0:03:02 > 0:03:05if the station had a serious problem, you have to go

0:03:05 > 0:03:09outside and fix things.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11Today, Tim Peake will join a small group of astronauts who have

0:03:11 > 0:03:13completed a spacewalk.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16European astronaut Luca Parmitano told Newsround how he felt

0:03:16 > 0:03:18when he stepped out into space.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20It was absolutely fantastic.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23I was giddy with excitement.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26For me, it was one of the most exhilerating experiences ever.

0:03:26 > 0:03:31Even though I was a test pilot, being on top of the world outside

0:03:31 > 0:03:34a space station looking at the earth through my space helmet

0:03:34 > 0:03:37and operating all this cool equipment, including

0:03:37 > 0:03:42being inside a space suit was a really fantastic moment.

0:03:42 > 0:03:48Emotional and the realisation of a dream.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51Mostly, we know it's important.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55There are a lot of people counting on you to perform really well

0:03:55 > 0:04:00for your tasks so that the space station is safe and can keep going.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40It's an unbelievable thing.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43It doesn't quite...

0:04:43 > 0:04:46It is also so new, we just found out, so it's quite shocking.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49Not far behind with three nominations including Best

0:04:49 > 0:04:51female is Jess Glynne.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54Tell us what it means to you as an artist.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36if they are a winner at the Brits 2016 and,
