:00:00. > :00:11.Good morning, it's Thursday 16th January. You're watching Newsround

:00:12. > :00:15.with me, Ricky. On the way... Searing heat stops play at the

:00:16. > :00:20.Australian Open. And ever wondered why birds fly in a V formation? The

:00:21. > :00:25.answer's coming up. This is Newsround.

:00:26. > :00:31.First, to the severe heatwave that's been raging through Australia.

:00:32. > :00:34.Temperatures have soared over 40 degrees Celsius again. And the

:00:35. > :00:37.extreme heat has forced the organisers of the Australian Open

:00:38. > :00:41.Tennis in Melbourne to stop the tournament. Players had been using

:00:42. > :00:45.ice packs in a desperate bid to keep cool, but in the end the heat was

:00:46. > :00:49.too much. And all players were told to finish their current sets and

:00:50. > :00:53.come off court. They are 11 hours ahead, so it's just gone 6:30pm in

:00:54. > :00:56.the evening there. Play is due to get started again in a couple of

:00:57. > :01:00.hours, in time for Andy Murray's match later this morning. Fans there

:01:01. > :01:08.think stopping play was the right move. Good on them so they have

:01:09. > :01:14.stopped it so other players do not have to deal with it. I am not

:01:15. > :01:19.surprised. It is quite dangerous in the heat for the players. It is not

:01:20. > :01:24.good they have to play in 44 degrees. The BBC's Jon Donnison is

:01:25. > :01:30.in Melbourne. He sent this report a bit earlier on. Just coming up to

:01:31. > :01:37.midday and the temperatures are up to around 40 degrees. We are told

:01:38. > :01:42.today it could get up to around 44 Celsius. Fans are doing what they

:01:43. > :01:46.can to cool down. It really is sauna like conditions. These two ladies

:01:47. > :01:55.have Robert Lee got the best seats in the house, right in front of

:01:56. > :02:01.these which are pumping out cold and misty air. I am going to join them.

:02:02. > :02:04.Absolute bliss! Sticking with sport, but in Manchester, not Melbourne. It

:02:05. > :02:07.was another goal-packed night for Manchester City as they hammered

:02:08. > :02:11.Blackburn to easily nail their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

:02:12. > :02:15.The score was 5-0 at the Etihad. Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko each

:02:16. > :02:21.scored twice. City have now scored 99 goals in all competitions so far

:02:22. > :02:25.this season. Next, it's one of nature's biggest mysteries. But

:02:26. > :02:28.researchers have finally found out just why many birds fly in a

:02:29. > :02:32.V-formation. A team of scientists fitted tiny little computers to a

:02:33. > :02:36.flock of birds as they migrated south for the winter and it's hoped

:02:37. > :02:46.the results can teach us a thing or two about our own flying habits.

:02:47. > :02:51.Ayshah has more. Every winter while we braved cold temperatures and

:02:52. > :02:56.miserable weather, up above different species of birds flying

:02:57. > :03:00.off to sun themselves in the south. For over 3000 years humans have

:03:01. > :03:04.looked at birds annual trips to warmer climates but we have not been

:03:05. > :03:11.able to study them up close until now. Scientists were able to get

:03:12. > :03:16.unique insight into their journey after they followed a flock of

:03:17. > :03:25.ibises in a plane. They were able to record the position, speed and wing

:03:26. > :03:31.flap. We discovered when they fly in AV formation they are taking

:03:32. > :03:38.advantage of each other's wake. How did you measure this? In my pocket,

:03:39. > :03:41.I have one of these things. This is effectively a smartphone. It will

:03:42. > :03:47.measure how much it is doing this and that in which way it is

:03:48. > :03:52.pointing. Why are these findings are important? It gives us an answer

:03:53. > :03:56.that birds are more clever than we thought. They are able to sense or

:03:57. > :04:01.guess where the air will be backed will give them the best chance of

:04:02. > :04:07.getting to winter grounds. It is also about making aircraft fly by

:04:08. > :04:10.using extra fuel. The next time you see a flock of birds flying off on

:04:11. > :04:17.their holidays you will know there is more to it than you would have

:04:18. > :04:21.thought. Next, to probaby the cutest twins you'll see all year. The

:04:22. > :04:24.fluffy pair of polar bears were born just five weeks ago at a zoo in

:04:25. > :04:28.Germany. And they've been caught on camera for the first time. Zoo

:04:29. > :04:31.keepers in Munich haven't worked out yet if they are brothers or sisters.

:04:32. > :04:35.Both cubs are being looked after very well by their mum, Giovanna. If

:04:36. > :04:38.you get a bit of spare time with your mates today, then don't forget

:04:39. > :04:42.to check out the brilliant Newsround website. See one of our top

:04:43. > :04:45.snowboarders in action ahead of the Winter Olympics. Find out the

:04:46. > :04:52.mystery of why birds fly in a V formation. And why Liam from 1D is

:04:53. > :04:54.saying sorry. Join me again at 8:15am. Goodbye.
