0:00:14 > 0:00:17Morning, Ricky here with your Newsround udpate.

0:00:17 > 0:00:22We're waking up to some great news from PyeongChang.

0:00:22 > 0:00:23Our first medal!

0:00:23 > 0:00:26Dom Parsons scooped bronze in the skeleton bob in the early

0:00:26 > 0:00:27hours of this morning.

0:00:27 > 0:00:33Here's how.

0:00:33 > 0:00:39This is the moment Dom Parsons won a dramatic bronze medal

0:00:39 > 0:00:42in the men's skeleton at the Olympic Sliding

0:00:42 > 0:00:44Centre in Pyeongchang.

0:00:44 > 0:00:51Yep, this is Great Britain's first in the games.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54Starting his final run in third place, Dom thought he had blown it,

0:00:54 > 0:00:59and lost out on a chance to pick up a medal, when he slipped behind

0:00:59 > 0:01:02Russia's Nikita Tregubov with two races still to go.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05But Latvian Martins Dukurs lost time on the lower part of the course

0:01:05 > 0:01:07to hand Parsons a bronze with just 0.11 seconds on it.

0:01:07 > 0:01:11That's close!

0:01:11 > 0:01:12COMMENTATOR:He has his medal!

0:01:12 > 0:01:16Come on, Great Britain!

0:01:16 > 0:01:18I thought I'd lost it, after that second round.

0:01:18 > 0:01:19Well, fourth round.

0:01:19 > 0:01:20Your heart sank?

0:01:20 > 0:01:23I looked up at the time, I made a couple too many

0:01:23 > 0:01:24mistakes in that run.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27But Martins made some more mistakes, and he's the last person I thought

0:01:27 > 0:01:33would make those mistakes.

0:01:33 > 0:01:41This is Great Britain's first medal in the men's skeleton since 1948.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44Sad news from America next, where tributes have been

0:01:44 > 0:01:46being paid after a serious gun attack on Wednesday.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48It happened in a school in Florida.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52Attacks like these don't tend to happen in other countries,

0:01:52 > 0:01:55like the UK, so it's got some people asking why America's attitude

0:01:55 > 0:01:59to guns is different.

0:01:59 > 0:02:07In America, it's not unusual for people to own a gun.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13Many Americans see owning one as an important

0:02:13 > 0:02:15part of who they are.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17That's because when the USA was founded, the right to buy

0:02:17 > 0:02:19and carry a gun was written into the constitution.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22That's a list of basic rules that a country is based on.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25But Americans disagree about what this rule should mean today.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27Some people think that it means there should be no controls,

0:02:27 > 0:02:30and that people should be able to buy and carry whatever gun

0:02:30 > 0:02:35they want whenever they want.

0:02:35 > 0:02:39But others think there should be controls on what type of gun you can

0:02:39 > 0:02:42own, and want the most powerful guns to be banned.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44And now there's been another gun attack, and sadly

0:02:44 > 0:02:4617 people have died.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49The attack took place in the city of Parkland in the state

0:02:49 > 0:02:51of Florida here in the US.

0:02:51 > 0:02:56And shortly after the attack, police were able to capture

0:02:56 > 0:02:58and arrest the man they believe was behind the shooting.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01It's the sixth school shooting in the US this year alone,

0:03:01 > 0:03:04and it has people once again asking what can be done to deal with gun

0:03:04 > 0:03:07violence here in the US?

0:03:07 > 0:03:10For every 100 people in the United States,

0:03:10 > 0:03:13there are 90 guns, and to put that into perspective, in England

0:03:13 > 0:03:18and Wales, for every 100 people, there are just six guns.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21Attacks like this one don't tend to happen here in the UK,

0:03:21 > 0:03:22where the rules are tougher.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25In the US, there's no sign that they'll be able to agree

0:03:25 > 0:03:28on what to do about it.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31Head to Newsround online, where you can find advice

0:03:31 > 0:03:38about what to do if anything in the news upsets you.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40Next, he's usually found hanging around the world's

0:03:40 > 0:03:41deadliest animals - but now Steve Backshall

0:03:41 > 0:03:43has a new challenge.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46He's going to attempt to climb the north face

0:03:46 > 0:03:49of Mount Eiger in Switzerland - also known as the wall of death.

0:03:49 > 0:03:56Hayley caught up with him to find out how he's been preparing...

0:03:56 > 0:04:01I've been training for five months and doing a lot of stuff to build up

0:04:01 > 0:04:07my strength to body weight, I've been losing weight, I've been on a

0:04:07 > 0:04:12diet for five months.Over Christmas?Tell me about it but I

0:04:12 > 0:04:16kind of feel ready.I know you've dealt with scary situations and

0:04:16 > 0:04:23animals. On a scale of one up to ten, how scary is this?Probably a

0:04:23 > 0:04:26ten!Coming from you, that is scary.

0:04:26 > 0:04:30Next, happy new year!

0:04:30 > 0:04:31No, I'm not late.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34It's Chinese New year and Ayshah's got all you need to know.

0:04:34 > 0:04:35Xin nian kuai le!

0:04:35 > 0:04:41Or, Happy Chinese New Year.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43Now, you may be thinking, hang on a minute.

0:04:43 > 0:04:44We've already had New Year.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47But Chinese New Year is a bit different to the one

0:04:47 > 0:04:48we celebrate on January the 1st.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50In China, they use a traditional calendar, which follows

0:04:50 > 0:04:52the movements of the moon.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55And Chinese New Year celebrates the start of a new moon.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58Each year is represented by one of 12 animals

0:04:58 > 0:05:02from the Chinese zodiac.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05And every 12 years, this loops back around and starts again.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07This year is the year of the dog.

0:05:07 > 0:05:09But what are the qualities of a person who was born

0:05:09 > 0:05:11in the year of the dog?

0:05:11 > 0:05:14Well, dog people are considered to be kind, loyal and honest.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16However, they are also thought to be stubborn,

0:05:16 > 0:05:22easy to anger and fussy.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25Famous people who were born in the year of the dog include

0:05:25 > 0:05:28Madonna, Justin Bieber and Donald Trump.

0:05:28 > 0:05:36So if you're celebrating this year, gong xi fa cai.
