:00:00. > :00:08.Backbreaking Work Hi, guys, Ayshah here with news on the shrinking size
:00:09. > :00:15.of chocolate on the way. Plus, how these Peruvian pooches are preparing
:00:16. > :00:18.for Christmas. Keep watching. First, it's something which isn't
:00:19. > :00:21.often reported on, but the Government says it's a growing
:00:22. > :00:25.global problem that needs to be tackled. When people are forced to
:00:26. > :00:30.work against their will, it's called modern slavery. Here's Nel with more
:00:31. > :00:33.on what it is and the people it affects.
:00:34. > :00:37.When you mention the word slavery, you probably think about the images
:00:38. > :00:40.we learn about in school. African men and women shipped to places like
:00:41. > :00:44.the West Indies and America during the 19th century, then sold and
:00:45. > :00:48.forced into back-breaking work. But even though that kind of slavery was
:00:49. > :00:52.officially abolished in the British Empire back in 1833, what you might
:00:53. > :00:57.not know is people are still being forced to work against their will
:00:58. > :01:00.right here in the UK. It's very different from what went on back
:01:01. > :01:03.then, and is known as modern slavery, but the Government are so
:01:04. > :01:13.concerned about it that they are going to give tougher punishments
:01:14. > :01:17.for those behind it. Ben, what is modern-day slavery? Whether it is in
:01:18. > :01:21.factories, nail bars, car washes, they are forced to work long hours.
:01:22. > :01:25.Some of the people we have helped have worked 20 hours per day seven
:01:26. > :01:30.days a week and received no payment. Men, women and children who
:01:31. > :01:35.are forced into becoming modern slaves in the UK come from all over
:01:36. > :01:39.the world, such as who are parts of Eastern Europe, Africa and Southeast
:01:40. > :01:43.Asia. Why don't they run away? These people are scared of the police,
:01:44. > :01:49.scared that if they leave, they will be beaten, scared that their family
:01:50. > :01:52.will be heard. Because the crime is carried out in secret, it's hard for
:01:53. > :01:55.the authorities to know how many people are affected. But under the
:01:56. > :01:59.new rules, the Government say criminals involved could now face a
:02:00. > :02:02.life sentence in prison. There will also be a new anti-slavery
:02:03. > :02:05.commissioner to make sure the law works. They hope these measures will
:02:06. > :02:12.reduce the number of people held in modern slavery in the future.
:02:13. > :02:16.Thanks, Nel. In other news, the United Nations is warning more than
:02:17. > :02:19.22 million Syrians will need food, water and medicine next year. They
:02:20. > :02:23.have launched their biggest ever appeal to try and raise $6.5 billion
:02:24. > :02:25.to help. It's more than two years since the devastating war between
:02:26. > :02:28.rebels and government forces started. Freezing temperatures this
:02:29. > :02:32.winter have made things worse for the millions affected.
:02:33. > :02:35.And in sport, Man City drew Barcelona, and Arsenal got Bayern
:02:36. > :02:41.Munich in the Champions League draw this morning. But the big footy news
:02:42. > :02:44.of the day is that Spurs have sacked their manager, Andre Villas-Boas. It
:02:45. > :02:49.follows their 5-0 loss to Liverpool yesterday.
:02:50. > :02:53.Next, chocolate lovers might have noticed your favourite snacks are
:02:54. > :02:56.shrinking. Sweet makers Mars are reducing the size of their most
:02:57. > :03:01.popular bars but will still charge you the same to buy one. They say it
:03:02. > :03:05.isn't about making more money but encouraging healthier eating. I've
:03:06. > :03:10.been finding out what you think. Chocolate is a multi-billion pound a
:03:11. > :03:14.year business here in the UK. But if you can't resist the odd sweet treat
:03:15. > :03:17.from time to time, look out for changes ahead. Because one of the
:03:18. > :03:23.leading chocolate makers around are about to give you slightly less bar
:03:24. > :03:26.for your buck. Mars has announced plans to reduce the size of their
:03:27. > :03:32.signature snack from 58g to 51 and trim Snickers from 58g to 48g, while
:03:33. > :03:35.still charging you the same same. They say it's part of a pledge to
:03:36. > :03:39.help people eat more healthily, keeping the amount of calories in
:03:40. > :03:44.these standard bars to fewer than 250. They're not the first to do it.
:03:45. > :03:48.Last year Cadbury's shrank the size of their Dairy Milk while keeping
:03:49. > :03:54.the price the same, they said because of the rising price of the
:03:55. > :04:01.cocoa that's used to make chocolate. Do you think it's fair that while
:04:02. > :04:07.reducing the size? Bill, because if you have a set amount of pocket
:04:08. > :04:14.money, you will not get any more. It is good in one way, because reducing
:04:15. > :04:19.the amount of obesity in children. I think it is to do with greedy
:04:20. > :04:25.businesses, and it is not fair about reducing the size and not reducing
:04:26. > :04:27.the price. Mars say the push for us all to live healthier lifestyles
:04:28. > :04:31.leaves them little choice, but shoppers are annoyed that the price
:04:32. > :04:35.won't be coming down with the size. So if you want to keep healthy and
:04:36. > :04:37.save money, you might just have to eat less.
:04:38. > :04:42.Finally to Peru, where dogs have gone Christmas crazy. A festive
:04:43. > :04:48.parade where owners dress up their prized pooches has been held in the
:04:49. > :04:50.capital, Lima. It was all to encourage owners to look after them
:04:51. > :04:53.over the holidays. That's it. I'm back at 6:50, see you
:04:54. > :04:57.then.
