0:00:03 > 0:00:07Ayshah here with Newsround this Sunday afternoon.

0:00:07 > 0:00:10This is what's coming your way: The start of a year-long party

0:00:10 > 0:00:15for cub scouts AND the furry little fella having fun in the snow.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31Many of us woke up to snow today as it fell over large parts

0:00:31 > 0:00:32of the UK.

0:00:32 > 0:00:32South-East England saw some of their first snow flurries,

0:00:34 > 0:00:37as well as Western Scotland, North-West England and the Midlands.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40You've been sending in your snowy snaps.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43Kate and Tom have sent this picture of a snowman they've made

0:00:43 > 0:00:44together.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47And this is the view on Lucy and Isobel's street.

0:00:47 > 0:00:49Here's a snow bear which Violeta has made.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52And Milly who's seven

0:00:52 > 0:00:56and from Luton sent us this pic of her snow ladies.

0:00:56 > 0:01:00And check out Dorothy the snow lady.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03Made by Charlie and katie from Milton Keynes.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07A lot of you will be having fun in the snow,

0:01:07 > 0:01:08and this squirrel in Estonia,

0:01:08 > 0:01:11Eastern Europe, is certainly enjoying this winter wonderland.

0:01:11 > 0:01:16Temperatures in the area reach around -12 this month.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19And this fella seemed to be diving in to find his favourite

0:01:19 > 0:01:22food - nuts!

0:01:22 > 0:01:25More than 20 new marine conservation zones are being set up

0:01:25 > 0:01:27around the UK coastline.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29They're designed to help protect the habitats

0:01:29 > 0:01:30and wildlife living there.

0:01:30 > 0:01:32Conservation and wildlife organisations are pleased but they,

0:01:32 > 0:01:35along with fishermen's groups, are also concerned about how it

0:01:35 > 0:01:38will be managed.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43We've been damaging our seas for centuries now, overfishing

0:01:43 > 0:01:47and polluting and using the protected area networks is one

0:01:47 > 0:01:50way to start to look after it and give our species

0:01:50 > 0:01:55and our habitats the space and time to start to recover and hopefully

0:01:55 > 0:01:59they can then start to thrive again.

0:02:00 > 0:02:01What's in the middle of our planet?

0:02:01 > 0:02:04That's what a team of scientists are trying to find out

0:02:04 > 0:02:06in an amazing experiment.

0:02:06 > 0:02:07Here's Leah.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12This is a drilling ship called the JOIDES Resolution,

0:02:12 > 0:02:14heading to the middle of the Indian Ocean.

0:02:14 > 0:02:18The team on board are preparing to drill miles beneath

0:02:18 > 0:02:20the ocean floor.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23They've chosen here because Earth's crust is thinner than other places,

0:02:23 > 0:02:26so it is easier to break through.

0:02:26 > 0:02:30It is a huge challenge, something no one has managed before.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33Our Earth is made up of layers, a bit like an onion.

0:02:33 > 0:02:37The scientists plan to sample the super hot rock from here,

0:02:37 > 0:02:40the planet's mantle.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43They'll use this to learn more about how the Earth was formed

0:02:43 > 0:02:47by studying the rocks buried there.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50They also wanted to try and find out if there's anything living

0:02:50 > 0:03:00there that could survive such extreme heat and pressure.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05The drill needs to travel 700 metres down through the seam and 5.5

0:03:05 > 0:03:07kilometres into the rock before it reaches the mantle,

0:03:07 > 0:03:09that's the length of about 50 football pitches!

0:03:09 > 0:03:12Even with the latest technology, it will take several years.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14It will take a long time, longer than we have on this

0:03:14 > 0:03:17expedition here to drill deeper and deeper until we finally reach

0:03:17 > 0:03:20this objective, then that's a very important finding and a very big

0:03:20 > 0:03:23implication for what we believe is going on deep in the subsurface

0:03:23 > 0:03:24of the planet.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27It's the start of a year-long party for anyone who's a Cub Scout

0:03:27 > 0:03:29and that's because it's the 100th anniversary

0:03:29 > 0:03:32of the organisation.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34Celebrations will be happening throughout the year,

0:03:34 > 0:03:37and to kick things off, cubs from all over the UK went

0:03:37 > 0:03:39for a sleepover at London Zoo.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43So what do these guys like about being Cubs?

0:03:45 > 0:03:48I thought I should join the Cubs because my brother was in it

0:03:48 > 0:03:51and he told me it was much more fun.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54Every week there were different adventures and you're not doing

0:03:54 > 0:03:57the same boring thing over and over again.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00You get this really excited feeling like you've done something really

0:04:00 > 0:04:01well when you get your badge.

0:04:01 > 0:04:05All I want to do is get more badges than my brothers.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10It's that time of the week again when we bring you the most weird

0:04:10 > 0:04:11and wonderful stories.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14Yes, it's Strange, Stranger, Strangest!

0:04:14 > 0:04:19Take a look at this incredible footage of a soap bubble freezing

0:04:19 > 0:04:23in -15 degrees.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26The artist who made the video wanted to show his daughter just how cold

0:04:26 > 0:04:30it was outside.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33Ice crystals in the water to begin to form, just like 2-D snowflakes

0:04:33 > 0:04:35in a snow globe.

0:04:39 > 0:04:43Staying with that freezing feeling, have a look at this car in New York.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46Just a few weeks ago, the city was enjoying its warmest

0:04:46 > 0:04:47Christmas on record, but now people living

0:04:47 > 0:04:50there are facing layers of ice and snow.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53The car, in Buffalo, was turned into a giant icicle

0:04:53 > 0:05:00as temperatures plummeted.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03And this has to be the strangest moment of the week.

0:05:03 > 0:05:14Astronaut Tim Peake showing us just how you drink water in space.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16And hopefully you can see there how water behaves,

0:05:16 > 0:05:22which also means it's easier to drink.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24Nice one, Tim!

0:05:24 > 0:05:28Just incredible.

0:05:29 > 0:05:31Last up, a new panda star has made its first appearance

0:05:31 > 0:05:35to his adoring public at the National Zoo in Washington

0:05:35 > 0:05:36in America.

0:05:36 > 0:05:38Bei Bei is five months old and until now has

0:05:38 > 0:05:40only be seen by video link.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43But big crowds gathered to see him making his debut,

0:05:43 > 0:05:47and you can't blame them, he's super-cute!

0:05:48 > 0:05:51That's all from me and the team, Newsround's back tomorrow

0:05:51 > 0:05:57morning with Ricky.
