0:00:11 > 0:00:14Hi, I'm Ayshah with your Thursday morning Newsround update.
0:00:14 > 0:00:16First, the Big Bang Fair has kicked off in Birmingham.
0:00:16 > 0:00:19It's the largest celebration of science, technology,
0:00:19 > 0:00:20engineering and maths for young people in the UK.
0:00:22 > 0:00:26It aims to inspire young scientists and engineers so I went along
0:00:26 > 0:00:30to check it out.
0:00:30 > 0:00:32Hello!
0:00:32 > 0:00:34Is this thing on?
0:00:34 > 0:00:38How does it work?!
0:00:38 > 0:00:43Now, I'm no technology expert, but luckily, these guys are.
0:00:43 > 0:00:4775,000 kids have packed out the NEC to learn more about maths
0:00:47 > 0:00:53and science by having a go at some really cool stunts and experiments.
0:00:53 > 0:00:57We've learnt that paper isn't actually really, really weak.
0:00:57 > 0:01:00You can build really tall towers out of it.
0:01:00 > 0:01:04We built a 20-centimetre tower out of it.
0:01:04 > 0:01:05We took a pig's heart out.
0:01:05 > 0:01:08Why did you do that? Because...
0:01:08 > 0:01:13To know what it's like to be a doctor if you want to be one.
0:01:13 > 0:01:16We got to touch it. What was that like?
0:01:16 > 0:01:18It was disgusting!
0:01:18 > 0:01:20I'll probably be an engineer more than a scientist.
0:01:20 > 0:01:22Why?
0:01:22 > 0:01:26Because you can create things and build things.
0:01:26 > 0:01:28And I'm quite good at that.
0:01:28 > 0:01:32There's jobs in science or maths, so you won't be able to get many
0:01:32 > 0:01:35jobs if you didn't know any of them.
0:01:35 > 0:01:38There's also to things you can learn, explore and discuss,
0:01:38 > 0:01:43from giant Hollywood special effects to this massive Easter egg.
0:01:43 > 0:01:47And it shows in here the stages to making your favourite chocolate.
0:01:47 > 0:01:50I should probably eat it now.
0:01:50 > 0:01:55This is the defender for England under-17s football squad.
0:01:55 > 0:01:57She's been working with a mathematics expert to come up
0:01:57 > 0:02:02with a formula that calculates how to take the perfect free kick.
0:02:02 > 0:02:05The perfect free kick, they've done loads of studies into it.
0:02:05 > 0:02:07The formula looks quite confusing.
0:02:07 > 0:02:09Basically, it's trying to get as much spin on the ball
0:02:09 > 0:02:12as possible, because when the ball spins, it kind of curves.
0:02:12 > 0:02:15So to get the perfect spin, thinking about the equation helps
0:02:15 > 0:02:18you and over time it just becomes natural.
0:02:18 > 0:02:28These studies are really helpful.
0:02:28 > 0:02:31Well, that was embarrassing, but it just goes to show that
0:02:31 > 0:02:33science and maths can be part of everything
0:02:33 > 0:02:34we do, even football.
0:02:34 > 0:02:35Well, I'm shattered.
0:02:35 > 0:02:37So much cool science stuff to do, from drones to spaceships,
0:02:37 > 0:02:39surgery and everything else in between.
0:02:39 > 0:02:41I think I'm going to find the guy with the chocolate.
0:02:41 > 0:02:44Next, could your school day be about to get longer?
0:02:44 > 0:02:46Well, the Government said yesterday kids in England might be spending
0:02:46 > 0:02:48more time in the classroom in the future.
0:02:48 > 0:02:51The idea was announced in yesterday's Budget.
0:02:51 > 0:02:53That's when the man in charge of spending the UK's money,
0:02:53 > 0:02:57George Osborne, sets out his plans for the year ahead.
0:02:57 > 0:02:59Ricky's got this one.
0:02:59 > 0:03:033:30pm and it's home time. It's when most of you finish school.
0:03:03 > 0:03:06But the Government announced plans to extend the school day in England
0:03:06 > 0:03:10so you finish later in the afternoon.
0:03:10 > 0:03:13It means secondary schools in England could be opened up
0:03:13 > 0:03:15for a few extra hours a week.
0:03:15 > 0:03:18Now, that's additional time that would be used for more lessons
0:03:18 > 0:03:23and even after-school activities like art and technology.
0:03:23 > 0:03:26So how would you feel about staying at school for longer?
0:03:26 > 0:03:28It'll be all right if it's good lessons.
0:03:28 > 0:03:30If it's bad lessons, it won't be good.
0:03:30 > 0:03:34I like being in school and having fun, but when you stay on too long,
0:03:34 > 0:03:36it just doesn't feel right.
0:03:36 > 0:03:39I have to go home to do my homework straight away, but if you had longer
0:03:39 > 0:03:42hours in school, I could get the teachers to help me do it.
0:03:42 > 0:03:45If we're there longer, it will affect our learning,
0:03:45 > 0:03:48because we won't be concentrating as much because we'd be tired.
0:03:48 > 0:03:52If children had extra education then they wouldn't have enough time to do
0:03:52 > 0:03:57the stuff children should be doing, like hanging out with friends.
0:03:57 > 0:04:01I think I would miss more time with my family and playing
0:04:01 > 0:04:04with my brothers and sisters.
0:04:04 > 0:04:07Some teacher groups don't think the extended hours are a good idea,
0:04:07 > 0:04:10saying children will miss out on family time at home and that some
0:04:10 > 0:04:13schools might struggle to find enough money to stay
0:04:13 > 0:04:15open for longer.
0:04:15 > 0:04:19The Government said they will give money to help schools in England,
0:04:19 > 0:04:21but there may not be enough for everyone.
0:04:21 > 0:04:24So if your school decides to extend your day, well,
0:04:24 > 0:04:30you could be in the classroom for a little bit longer.
0:04:30 > 0:04:33We asked you what you think about the idea of a longer school
0:04:33 > 0:04:35day and absolutely loads of you have been in touch.
0:04:35 > 0:04:39Stan in Southampton says that if they make school longer a lot
0:04:39 > 0:04:42of children won't have time to do their homework
0:04:42 > 0:04:43and relax after school.
0:04:43 > 0:04:46It will be home, homework, tea and then bed!
0:04:46 > 0:04:48Rebecca agrees, saying: I don't think children should have longer
0:04:48 > 0:04:51days because they might not be able to do the other things that
0:04:51 > 0:04:54are important, like getting exercise.
0:04:54 > 0:04:56And Yazmin in Gloucestershire is worried about losing out
0:04:56 > 0:04:57on family time.
0:04:57 > 0:05:02She says: At weekends we are more busy doing homework.
0:05:02 > 0:05:05As well as plans to charge your school day, the Government's also
0:05:05 > 0:05:09said many sweet, fizzy drinks are about to get more expensive,
0:05:09 > 0:05:12to try and get us to cut down on sugar.
0:05:12 > 0:05:15They say the extra money raised from sugary drinks is expected to be
0:05:15 > 0:05:20hundreds of millions of pounds a year.
0:05:20 > 0:05:23The changes will start in two years' time.
0:05:23 > 0:05:26Now to treasure under the sea, and a 500-year-old shipwreck has
0:05:26 > 0:05:28been uncovered off the coast of Oman.
0:05:28 > 0:05:32Divers have been busy exploring the wreckage of the ship,
0:05:32 > 0:05:35thought to have been part of a Portuguese explorer's fleet,
0:05:35 > 0:05:39which they think sailed in 1503.
0:05:39 > 0:05:42Using special equipment they've found ceramics,
0:05:42 > 0:05:45a bell and an incredibly rare silver coin called an Indio,
0:05:45 > 0:05:49one of only two known to exist today.
0:05:49 > 0:05:51Wow!
0:05:51 > 0:05:53That's all your news for this morning.
0:05:53 > 0:06:00Newsround's back at 4.20pm this afternoon, so don't miss it.
0:06:00 > 0:06:01Bye-bye.
