:00:11. > :00:12.Good afternoon, I'm Hayley with Newsround.

:00:13. > :00:15.Today we're talking about Jo Cox, who was an MP -

:00:16. > :00:21.She was voted in by the people in her local area to work on issues

:00:22. > :00:28.Yesterday, sadly, she was killed while doing that work.

:00:29. > :00:31.Jo Cox has been described as hard-working, a star

:00:32. > :00:35.and someone who fought for a better world.

:00:36. > :00:38.She was the MP for people in the area of Batley and Spen

:00:39. > :00:43.Jo lived on a boat in London and, before becoming a politician,

:00:44. > :00:46.she worked with refugees and for charities like Oxfam

:00:47. > :00:53.She was a supporter of immigration - that's people coming here to live

:00:54. > :01:07.Whilst we celebrate our diversity, the thing that surprises me time and

:01:08. > :01:10.time again is that we are far more at United and have far more in

:01:11. > :01:13.common than that which divides us. Yesterday, Jo died after being

:01:14. > :01:15.attacked in the village of Birstall in West Yorkshire,

:01:16. > :01:18.while out doing her job. It's left people across

:01:19. > :01:28.the country in shock. Today our nation is rightly shocked

:01:29. > :01:31.and I think it is a moment to stand back and think about some of the

:01:32. > :01:33.things that are so important about our country.

:01:34. > :01:38.shouted, "Britain First" or, "Put Britain First".

:01:39. > :01:40.Britain First is also the name of a political party.

:01:41. > :01:42.They've said in the past that they hate politicians

:01:43. > :01:47.However, they've said the suspect was never a member and that

:01:48. > :01:49.Britain First has no connection to what happened.

:01:50. > :01:53.They've also said the attack was wrong.

:01:54. > :01:56.We don't yet know why it happened, but some people are asking

:01:57. > :01:59.whether hatred towards immigrants and politicians that support them

:02:00. > :02:04.Police are still investigating the event, which has

:02:05. > :02:11.It's important to remember that events like this are extremely rare.

:02:12. > :02:14.And if you're ever feeling upset by the news, then head to Newsround

:02:15. > :02:23.Among those remembering Jo today are pupils at a school in the area

:02:24. > :02:33.But when I met Jo Cox, I thought some MPs are actually really lively

:02:34. > :02:37.She was a really funny, caring person.

:02:38. > :02:40.Going up and down the country taking everyone's ideas and just trying to

:02:41. > :02:45.When she told us that she was an MP, it

:02:46. > :02:49.She stood up for what she thought was right.

:02:50. > :02:51.She made a big difference to our community.

:02:52. > :02:54.Jo Cox liked to help loads of young people.

:02:55. > :02:58.And she liked helping other people around the

:02:59. > :03:03.All day many people have been leaving flowers

:03:04. > :03:05.and messages in Birstall, where Jo had been working yesterday.

:03:06. > :03:07.The BBC's Sophie Long sent Newsround this report

:03:08. > :03:15.These are some of the flowers that people have brought

:03:16. > :03:18.You can see this one here is from the staff and

:03:19. > :03:22.pupils at a local primary school with pictures of when Jo Cox took

:03:23. > :03:27.Some people here have been very, very upset and haven't

:03:28. > :03:32.Others are asking why such a terrible thing happened to such a

:03:33. > :03:42.She did a lot of work with children in particular refugee

:03:43. > :03:55.Yes. She had only been a member of Parliament for one year. She had

:03:56. > :04:00.spent her whole life sticking up some of the most vulnerable children

:04:01. > :04:04.in the world. In the last year she had been pressing the Prime Minister

:04:05. > :04:07.to help children in Syria who are stranded without their parents and

:04:08. > :04:12.desperately need a home. It is because people like how that many of

:04:13. > :04:18.those children are now being cared for. That's amazing. Many people

:04:19. > :04:22.shocked. Many people have been phoning end. Why is it important

:04:23. > :04:29.that people who do the work they year and Jo Cox do I protected from

:04:30. > :04:32.violence like this? Because MPs are elected by the people in the team

:04:33. > :04:37.unity is where we left and we speak on their behalf. It is important

:04:38. > :04:42.that when we decide how we run the country that we heard. Should not

:04:43. > :04:47.just be the people who shout the loudest or ability other people who

:04:48. > :04:52.get the loudest voice. That is way Jo Cox was important, because she

:04:53. > :04:57.was always honest and spoke up even when her opinion was unpopular. What

:04:58. > :05:03.is it like to see all these tributes from all over the world? It shows

:05:04. > :05:07.how great she was. She was fearless and spoke on behalf of people.

:05:08. > :05:12.People were to her because of the way she went about her daily

:05:13. > :05:16.business. She was respectful and honest. The best thing we could do

:05:17. > :05:21.to honour her now is to make sure that we respect one another and men

:05:22. > :05:24.we debate we do it in a way that looks after one another and cares

:05:25. > :05:24.for everyone in the country. Thank you.

:05:25. > :05:30.Newsround will be back on TV tomorrow morning at 8.55am
