:00:17. > :00:22.Hello, it is the middle of the week, this is Newsround and we are Ore

:00:22. > :00:26.and Hayley. We are just after five with loads of stuff coming up.

:00:26. > :00:33.Stick around for a race at a snail's pace, the loser gets eaten.

:00:34. > :00:38.It really does! And the sunflower that just kept on growing.

:00:38. > :00:41.Before that though, they may be small but they can save your life.

:00:41. > :00:45.We are talking cycling helmets. In countries like Australia and New

:00:45. > :00:50.Zealand, you cannot get on a bike without one. But here in the UK,

:00:50. > :00:53.wearing a helmet is not the law and only one in five of you put one on.

:00:53. > :00:56.But one man who will not be seen pedalling around without one is

:00:56. > :01:00.Olympic gold medallist rower and action man James Cracknell. That is

:01:00. > :01:03.him in the sunglasses. He has rowed across the Atlantic and even

:01:04. > :01:08.trekked to the South Pole. But last year, when he was cycling across

:01:08. > :01:11.America, he had a serious accident. He was hit on the back of the head

:01:11. > :01:15.by a truck's wing mirror as it tried to overtake him. His injuries

:01:15. > :01:18.were so serious he had to spend weeks in hospital but his helmet

:01:18. > :01:28.helped him survive. Now, as he told Ricky, he wants everyone to wear

:01:28. > :01:30.

:01:30. > :01:36.one. Please, use your head, it used a

:01:36. > :01:41.helmet. Now, having been involved in a serious accident, I would not

:01:41. > :01:46.be alive if I did not have a helmet on. The reason for wearing one is

:01:46. > :01:51.obvious. It not only protect sea but the people who love you and

:01:51. > :01:59.care about you. It is selfish to not wear one. I was lucky. I was

:01:59. > :02:04.wearing a helmet. If I had not been, I would be dead. You might get a

:02:04. > :02:09.slightly hotter head and it might mess your hair up so don't cycle as

:02:09. > :02:15.fast or leave early say you can do your hair at the other end. No one

:02:15. > :02:20.now would suggest wearing a motorbike without a helmet. I am

:02:20. > :02:25.already back on my bike. Some cyclists will never ride again. If

:02:25. > :02:30.you do have a crack on the head, your whole life changes. What job

:02:30. > :02:36.you can get, whether you can play sport or music. All of those things

:02:36. > :02:41.will be affected. From my personal experience, without one of these,

:02:41. > :02:46.that would have been it. It may not be the most attractive hat but it

:02:46. > :02:49.is far more attractive than the consequences.

:02:49. > :02:52.Thank you. Ricky went to find out what you

:02:52. > :02:59.guys thought about wearing helmets and there was a pretty mixed

:03:00. > :03:06.response. I don't wear one because it feels uncomfortable and I don't

:03:06. > :03:13.like it. I wear one because if I fall over I normally bash my head.

:03:13. > :03:19.I wear one because I have a cool helmet. People say it looks

:03:19. > :03:23.ridiculous. They make fun of you. It is not that much of an effort to

:03:23. > :03:27.put a helmet on and if you fall, you might as well be wearing one

:03:27. > :03:35.because it will protect your head. $$nNEWLINE We are joined by Julie

:03:35. > :03:40.Townshend from road safety charity Brake. Can you tell me why it is

:03:40. > :03:45.important for kids to wear helmets? It is so important for people of

:03:46. > :03:50.all ages who cycle to wear a helmet. It is a really simple step you can

:03:50. > :03:55.take to protect yourself. If you wear one you are less likely to be

:03:55. > :04:01.injured. Some people think wearing one of these is embarrassing. What

:04:01. > :04:06.would you say to those guys? should not be embarrassed. It is

:04:06. > :04:10.the smart thing to do. Professional cyclists all wear helmets. It could

:04:10. > :04:14.save your life which has the most important thing. Should we make it

:04:14. > :04:19.compulsory like it is in other countries? We would like it to be

:04:19. > :04:24.compulsory. We want lots more done to make it safer for everyone to

:04:24. > :04:28.cycle so we want more safe cycle paths and lower speed limits.

:04:28. > :04:31.you for coming in. Let's move it on and talk about

:04:31. > :04:34.last week's riots across England, as lots of the people involved have

:04:34. > :04:38.been in court. But some people are saying their punishments have been

:04:38. > :04:41.too harsh. Two men were sentenced to four years in prison for using

:04:41. > :04:47.Facebook to try to start riots. Prime Minister David Cameron has

:04:47. > :04:50.said it's a good thing courts are sending out a tough message.

:04:50. > :04:55.Now, here is a story of a real-life Jack And the Beanstalk. But without

:04:55. > :04:59.the giant. In fact, there is no Jack or beanstalk either. We call

:04:59. > :05:09.it Eve and the Sunflower. It is a tall tale of a tiny sunflower that

:05:09. > :05:16.

:05:16. > :05:21.grew and grew. Just have a look at It starts with a tiny seed and some

:05:21. > :05:26.water. A bit of sun and if you are lucky, this is what you get, more

:05:26. > :05:29.than six metres of sunflower. Eve planted the seed with her

:05:29. > :05:34.granddaughter and it kept on growing. I did not think it would

:05:34. > :05:39.come to anything and it grew! Although sunflowers are famous for

:05:39. > :05:45.being tall, they are normally only three metres high so this one is

:05:46. > :05:50.pretty special. We have had a nice, warm summer. Things have grown well.

:05:50. > :05:55.The other thing that looks really right about that is it is in such a

:05:55. > :06:01.nice, cosy spot. It has a wall up against it so there has been no

:06:01. > :06:04.wind to take the top out. The world record was set in Germany by a

:06:04. > :06:10.sunflower which grew to eight metres tall so Eve's sunflower has

:06:10. > :06:14.got a bit of a way to go. We had some good news today, the

:06:14. > :06:21.amount of pocket money you get has gone up for the first time in eight

:06:21. > :06:25.years. According to a survey, you get an average of 6.25 per week.

:06:25. > :06:30.That is more than last year. But things are starting to cost more

:06:30. > :06:36.and how much you get depends on where you live and apparently boys

:06:36. > :06:40.get more than girls. We wanted to find out what you think. Danielle

:06:40. > :06:43.who is 12 from Norwich thinks every child should get the same amount.

:06:43. > :06:48.She says she does not get any pocket money back some of her

:06:49. > :06:54.friends get 10. She helps around the house and does nothing.

:06:54. > :06:58.Ten-year-old Nathan from Newport says he only gets 1.50 a week and

:06:58. > :07:01.he is 10. He says his friends get between three and 5.

:07:01. > :07:06.Megan from Gloucester says she does not think boys get more money than

:07:06. > :07:10.girls. She has got a little brother and he hardly gets any money. She

:07:10. > :07:14.thinks it is the other way round. Thank you for getting in touch. If

:07:14. > :07:20.you want to have your say, if you can go to the Newsround website and

:07:20. > :07:24.tell us all about it. Next, to some athletes racing at a

:07:24. > :07:28.snail's pace. These slimy sprinters are taking part in the World Snail

:07:28. > :07:34.Racing Championships in France. It has been going for 40 years. The

:07:34. > :07:40.winning snail gets a shiny trophy but the losers get eaten. Why are

:07:40. > :07:43.there so many people watching a snail's race? Surely it would get

:07:43. > :07:49.boring! That is it for today. We have loads
