:00:00. > :00:24.The nominations for the biggest movie awards in the world,

:00:25. > :00:27.the Oscars, were announced last week - but they've proved

:00:28. > :00:37.Lots of people aren't happy, and many have criticised the awards

:00:38. > :00:39.Some have even said they'll be staying at home, instead of coming

:00:40. > :00:45.Last year, a film about Martin Luther King, Selma,

:00:46. > :00:48.was celebrated for how it told the story about the fight for black

:00:49. > :00:51.people to be treated the same as white people in America

:00:52. > :01:04.The star of the film David Oyelowo who played Martin Luther King

:01:05. > :01:17.It got people talking but this year it has happened again.

:01:18. > :01:22.For 20 opportunities to celebrate actors of colour,

:01:23. > :01:25.actresses of colour, to be missed last year is one thing

:01:26. > :01:31.but for that to happen again this year is unforgivable.

:01:32. > :01:34.He is talking about the 20 people nominated in the acting categories

:01:35. > :01:42.like Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress.

:01:43. > :01:44.The actress Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith's wife,

:01:45. > :01:50.I will not be at the Academy Awards and will not be watching.

:01:51. > :01:52.The way nominations work is by voting.

:01:53. > :01:55.A group of people who are members of the Academy all get to vote

:01:56. > :02:02.There are over 6,000 members who vote on everything from the big

:02:03. > :02:04.awards like best actor and actress to the smaller awards

:02:05. > :02:11.However, according to a report, most of the members of the Academy,

:02:12. > :02:18.The head of the Oscars says in a statement

:02:19. > :02:21.that she is heartbroken and frustrated.

:02:22. > :02:24.She wants the Academy membership to become more diverse which means

:02:25. > :02:28.involving people from different cultures.

:02:29. > :02:34.What we really need is the support of the industry across the board,

:02:35. > :02:37.So, hopefully future Oscar nominations will not cause

:02:38. > :02:44.Joining me on the sofa now is BBC Enterntainment Correspondent,

:02:45. > :03:03.It is not just black actors missing. No Hispanic actors, the big

:03:04. > :03:10.embarrassment for the Academy the lack of black actors, very popular

:03:11. > :03:15.films as black stars, creed and the only actor nominated was white and a

:03:16. > :03:19.black hip-hop movie was very popular and not nominated for Best picture,

:03:20. > :03:24.the only nomination was for the white writers. It seems to be a

:03:25. > :03:28.problem with the Oscars, not any other awards. Black people have one

:03:29. > :03:32.at the Oscars in the past with nominations but it has been a bad

:03:33. > :03:37.couple of years. In the past, the Black entertainment awards were set

:03:38. > :03:41.up and oboes to make sure that our award shows with black people

:03:42. > :03:44.nominated. The Oscars need to change.

:03:45. > :03:48.Moving on, to these two surfers in Australia,

:03:49. > :03:51.who have developed a new invention which is designed to collect rubbish

:03:52. > :03:56.Rubbish in the ocean can cause real problems for sea-life.

:03:57. > :03:58.Eight million tonnes of plastic goes into the world's oceans every year

:03:59. > :04:02.and experts say it poses serious risks, especially to birds

:04:03. > :04:09.and animals like turtles, dolphins and whales.

:04:10. > :04:12.A pair of surfers from Perth, Australia, have invented a nifty

:04:13. > :04:17.tool which they hope might help to reduce the problem.

:04:18. > :04:20.Pete and Andrew have created the seabin.

:04:21. > :04:24.Its special design means that rubbish floating on the water

:04:25. > :04:31.The lining inside is then lifted out and the rubbish

:04:32. > :04:35.Just now the seabin is used in ports and harbours which are areas

:04:36. > :04:39.that the tide and winds push rubbish in to.

:04:40. > :04:41.The guys are hoping to raise money for the project

:04:42. > :04:46.A process where people can give money to support things
