:00:00. > :00:10.Hi, I'm Martin with your morning Newsround. On today's show, hold
:00:11. > :00:13.onto your breakfast, cos we've got some seriously creepy crawlies, as a
:00:14. > :00:17.TV doctor infests himself with a bunch of parasites.
:00:18. > :00:21.And pictures of a super-rare baby giraffe, thought to be the first of
:00:22. > :00:28.its kind born in the UK. This is Newsround.
:00:29. > :00:31.First, we're going to Ukraine in eastern Europe, where violent
:00:32. > :00:37.clashes have been going on overnight in the capital Kiev between police
:00:38. > :00:40.and anti-government protesters. Riot police have been firing explosives,
:00:41. > :00:43.trying to evict people from the main protest camp, which has been in
:00:44. > :00:47.place since unrest began nearly three months ago. But protesters
:00:48. > :00:50.have been fighting back against the police - at least 25 people have
:00:51. > :00:54.died in this latest violence. The crisis started over whether Ukraine
:00:55. > :01:01.should have closer ties with the European Union or with Russia.
:01:02. > :01:05.Now, remember last summer, the hottest for many years? No, seems
:01:06. > :01:08.ages ago to me too. But new research out today suggests that last year's
:01:09. > :01:10.good weather was good news for Britain's farmland butterflies. The
:01:11. > :01:16.Wider Countryside Butterfly Survey recorded almost double the number of
:01:17. > :01:19.insects compared with 2012. The report says that sunny weather
:01:20. > :01:26.provided perfect breeding conditions for butterflies.
:01:27. > :01:29.Well, today is one of the biggest dates in the calendar for British
:01:30. > :01:33.music, the BRIT Awards. Loads of big stars from the world of pop will be
:01:34. > :01:37.at London O2's Arena, hoping to bag a Brit. The likes of Ellie Goulding,
:01:38. > :01:42.Jessie J, Rudimental and Lorde are just some of those battling it out.
:01:43. > :01:48.And this afternoon, our very own Ayshah will be down live on the red
:01:49. > :01:51.carpet bringing you all the latest. Next, if you've not had your
:01:52. > :01:54.breakfast this morning then I suggest you look away now, because
:01:55. > :01:59.we're about to ramp up the yuk factor! This is Dr Michael Mosley, a
:02:00. > :02:05.man prepared to put his body through almost anything, all in the name of
:02:06. > :02:08.science. In a new BBC documentary, he infests himself with a bunch of
:02:09. > :02:17.gruesome parasites to see how they affect the human body. Jenny has
:02:18. > :02:22.this one. Bloodsucking leeches, stomach
:02:23. > :02:26.turning tapeworms and infectious head lice. Not the sort of thing you
:02:27. > :02:34.would choose to have wriggling around your body if you could help
:02:35. > :02:37.it. Unless you are this Doctor! I had to go with various different
:02:38. > :02:44.parasites. I started off with tapeworm. It was a little bit
:02:45. > :02:49.disgusting, I have to say. They were like jelly babies but not very
:02:50. > :02:54.sweet. Then I swallowed this camera with a glass of water. It sends
:02:55. > :03:03.pictures to a transmitter and from there to a screen. So you can
:03:04. > :03:12.actually see your stomach live. That is it! That is the tapeworm. You can
:03:13. > :03:19.see it. God, that is horrible. Next up, leeches. I basically attached
:03:20. > :03:24.back to my arm and it started to suck. It was actually quite pleasant
:03:25. > :03:31.and it grew about eight times the size it was. It drank quite a lot of
:03:32. > :03:38.blood and then it dropped off. My daughter took my leach and
:03:39. > :03:45.unfortunately it is cake after a few months and was eaten by the cat.
:03:46. > :03:49.Doctor Michael says he is doing this to help scientists at Salford
:03:50. > :03:52.University in their research into parasites and the diseases they
:03:53. > :03:59.spread. So, after that, what did they learn? The message for me is
:04:00. > :04:02.parasites are genius and fascinating. And a little bit
:04:03. > :04:06.disgusting. It was a bad night for Manchester
:04:07. > :04:09.City in the Champions League as they lost 2-0 at home to Barcelona. City
:04:10. > :04:12.had Martin Demichelis sent off for this foul on Lionel Messi.
:04:13. > :04:15.Argentina's genius converted the penalty for Barca's first goal. Dani
:04:16. > :04:18.Alves then picked up the Spanish side's second to give them a
:04:19. > :04:23.valuable lead going into the second-leg. Tonight, Arsenal play
:04:24. > :04:27.Bayern Munich. Winter sports now, and it's a big
:04:28. > :04:30.day in the curling, and an even bigger day for Team GB, with both
:04:31. > :04:34.the men and woman's sides playing for a place in the final. Eve
:04:35. > :04:38.Muirhead and co go up against Canada at 10am, whilst the men's side take
:04:39. > :04:43.on Sweden at three o'clock this afternoon.
:04:44. > :04:47.Last up - to a very rare birth at a zoo in Cumbria in the north west of
:04:48. > :04:51.England... It's thought this is the first West African Giraffe to be
:04:52. > :04:56.born in the UK. It is one of the rarest animals on the planet, with
:04:57. > :05:00.only a few in captivity, and just a few hundred in the wild.
