:00:15. > :00:16.Members of Parliament will vote later today

:00:17. > :00:18.on whether to have a general election - that's where adults vote

:00:19. > :00:25.It's after Prime Minister Theresa May made the surprise announcement

:00:26. > :00:39.I have said that there should be no election until 2020.

:00:40. > :00:42.But now I have concluded that the only way to guarantee

:00:43. > :00:44.certainty and stability for the years ahead is to hold

:00:45. > :00:50.this election and seek your support for the decisions I must take.

:00:51. > :00:54.So it's a big day for the whole UK but it starts in London

:00:55. > :01:00.Yes, I'm at Downing Street in Westminster in London.

:01:01. > :01:02.Behind that door is where the Prime Minister

:01:03. > :01:09.Later, she will go around the corner to to the Houses of Parliament

:01:10. > :01:12.where all the MPs will vote on whether or not to give

:01:13. > :01:15.the Prime Minister her wish and to have that big vote -

:01:16. > :01:18.These big votes are supposed to take place every five years

:01:19. > :01:22.so it was a big surprise to hear Mrs May say she wants one.

:01:23. > :01:23.Here's our political expert Adam Fleming.

:01:24. > :01:26.This came as a total surprise to people who watch politics.

:01:27. > :01:28.Imagine the most surprising thing that's ever happened

:01:29. > :01:32.to you and multiply it by about 100 and that is why there are so many

:01:33. > :01:34.journalists from across the UK and around the world reporting

:01:35. > :01:41.Theresa May says that she wants there to be a general

:01:42. > :01:45.So in about six or seven weeks' time.

:01:46. > :01:47.Although she can't just say it, she has got to get Parliament

:01:48. > :01:55.This is all about Brexit, which is that process of taking

:01:56. > :02:00.the UK out of the club of 27 other European countries called the EU.

:02:01. > :02:02.Theresa May is about to start negotiating with lots of other

:02:03. > :02:05.prime ministers and presidents from around Europe.

:02:06. > :02:11.She reckons that by having an election year, she could get more

:02:12. > :02:14.She reckons that by having an election here, she could get more

:02:15. > :02:17.MPs who are on her side and that will make her job a bit easier.

:02:18. > :02:21.What happens next is weeks of debates, arguments, leaflets,

:02:22. > :02:24.adverts and fights about all sorts of things like the police,

:02:25. > :02:26.the economy, Scotland, health and what happens

:02:27. > :02:35.It is going to be fascinating to watch.

:02:36. > :02:39.Members of Parliament are likely to vote later to allow this

:02:40. > :02:43.It'll take place on 8th of June - so what happens

:02:44. > :02:52.Well, the UK is divided into 650 areas called constituencies.

:02:53. > :02:55.Each area has a Member of Parliament, or an MP,

:02:56. > :03:02.All of them get a seat here, in the Houses of Parliament.

:03:03. > :03:05.In a general election, adults 18 and over get the chance

:03:06. > :03:09.to vote for who should be the MP in their area.

:03:10. > :03:13.On election day, people go to polling stations to vote.

:03:14. > :03:17.They get a ballot paper with names of all the candidates,

:03:18. > :03:23.They put a cross next to the person they most want to represent them.

:03:24. > :03:28.The candidate who gets the most votes becomes MP.

:03:29. > :03:32.Most MPs are part of groups called political parties.

:03:33. > :03:36.Usually the political party that gets the most MPs out of the 650

:03:37. > :03:40.forms the new government, which runs the country.

:03:41. > :03:42.And that party's leader becomes the Prime Minister and moves

:03:43. > :03:50.So it's a very busy time for politicians and for voters.

:03:51. > :03:53.We've got 49 days to wait before the election happens and there'll be

:03:54. > :03:57.a lot of talking and arguing between now and then as each

:03:58. > :04:00.side explains why adults should vote for them.

:04:01. > :04:07.The leader of the winning party will be back in

:04:08. > :04:14.Thanks, Ayshah, and you can go online to find out more on this

:04:15. > :04:19.story including exactly what happens during a general election.

:04:20. > :04:21.Now, sadly it was the end of Leicester City's adventure

:04:22. > :04:28.Saul Nigez scored first for Atletico Madrid but then

:04:29. > :04:31.Jamie Vardy scored in the second half to give Leicester a chance

:04:32. > :04:38.As these matches are decided over two games, Atletico got

:04:39. > :04:41.through because they won the first match 1-0 meaing the final result

:04:42. > :05:00.We are disappointed. But the football club can be proud of how we

:05:01. > :05:05.have conducted ourselves and how we have gone about it. They should want

:05:06. > :05:09.more of this because ultimately all players want to play at the highest

:05:10. > :05:14.level and the Champions League is the highest level. But we have to

:05:15. > :05:17.get back to winning ways in the Premier League now. Unlucky for

:05:18. > :05:22.Leicester. Good run. And a massive asteroid will zoom

:05:23. > :05:24.past Planet Earth today. NASA say it will get

:05:25. > :05:32.very close to the Earth, but it won't make any impact

:05:33. > :05:35.as it'll still be about I'll be back at 4:20pm

:05:36. > :06:03.with your afternoon Newsround. Have you been watching Secret Life

:06:04. > :06:06.of Boys?
