:00:09. > :00:13.far too nice to stay indoors, so we've come out here to do a bulletin

:00:13. > :00:23.all about this amazing weather we are having. It is the longest

:00:23. > :00:26.

:00:26. > :00:30.heatwave in seven years and they today - and around the country, too.

:00:30. > :00:33.On the south coast, for example, gritters have been out - they are

:00:33. > :00:37.usually used to stop roads getting too icy, but today the grit is being

:00:37. > :00:41.used to stop the roads melting! And as the heatwave continues, it is not

:00:41. > :00:45.just us humans who have to worry about the heat. Your pets are also

:00:45. > :00:53.at risk. They can't cool down as easily as us, as Leah has been

:00:54. > :00:57.finding out. Put on a hat, apply some suncream and grab a drink. Just

:00:57. > :01:01.a few ways we can keep cool and safe during this glorious weather. But

:01:01. > :01:04.it's not as easy as that for your pets. According to the RSPCA,

:01:04. > :01:07.animals are more at risk during exceptionally sunny weather because

:01:07. > :01:11.they cannot sweat through their skin in the same way as humans. The only

:01:11. > :01:14.way your pets can cool down is by panting and sweating through their

:01:14. > :01:24.paws - so if you aren't careful, they can dehydrate, fall ill and

:01:24. > :01:24.

:01:25. > :01:32.even die. Emma and Monkey the dog know all about the problems pets can

:01:32. > :01:38.have. How can you tell when they are really hot? If they are a bit more

:01:38. > :01:45.grumpy than normal, that is one indication. My three top tips would

:01:45. > :01:47.be, firstly, make sure they have got plenty of water. Secondly, do not

:01:47. > :01:53.exercise them in the heat of the day. Thirdly, make sure they have

:01:53. > :01:56.got some shade. The hot weather has already claimed the lives of several

:01:56. > :01:59.animals this summer after owners didn't realise how dangerous it was

:01:59. > :02:02.to leave them in cars. Temperatures inside vehicles rise very quickly

:02:02. > :02:06.and it takes very little time for animals like dogs to die in such

:02:06. > :02:10.heat, so they should never be left alone. It's not just pet owners who

:02:10. > :02:13.need to be aware of the heat - zoos across the country have been feeding

:02:13. > :02:16.animals specially-made ice lollies! With temperatures expected to get

:02:16. > :02:19.even hotter next week, more of us will be outside enjoying ourselves,

:02:20. > :02:22.so remember, look after yourself and keep an extra eye on your furry

:02:23. > :02:27.friends. Loads of people out here enjoying the sunshine today, and

:02:27. > :02:30.what better way to cool down than a nice refreshing dip? But it can be

:02:30. > :02:37.dangerous if you are not safe. I'm joined by Gus O'Rourke from Cheshire

:02:37. > :02:41.Fire and Rescue Service. The problem is, the children do not know what is

:02:41. > :02:46.below the surface. Also, the temperature of the water can be

:02:46. > :02:51.incredibly cold. If children want to go swimming, get your old-fashioned

:02:51. > :02:55.paddling pool out, go to the swimming pool, get your parents to

:02:56. > :03:00.take you to coastal areas which are supervised, where it will be safe.

:03:00. > :03:04.If you cannot get to the coast, are their places you can go to swim in

:03:04. > :03:09.the lake or the river? The best thing you can do is to go where

:03:09. > :03:11.there is an organised group come or supervised. Look online for some

:03:11. > :03:18.open air swimming pools, for example. You might be able to find

:03:18. > :03:22.one of those. And we have also been hearing about grass fires. Yes, we

:03:22. > :03:27.get very stretched in conditions like this, it is very easy to set

:03:27. > :03:31.fire to grass. We want you to be careful with any barbecues, any

:03:31. > :03:37.glass which might magnify the rays of the sun, because grasslands can

:03:37. > :03:43.set fire very easily. Kids can get burnt as a result of that. We would

:03:43. > :03:46.ask people to be extra vigilant around grass. Thanks for coming and

:03:47. > :03:49.talking to us. I hope you are not too busy this weekend. Lots of

:03:50. > :03:59.lovely hot weather comments coming into the Newsround website today -

:04:00. > :04:22.

:04:22. > :04:24.thanks so much. Elise in Essex has waiting for a heatwave this long. So

:04:25. > :04:29.that's it from Newsround on this gorgeous, warm Friday afternoon. Our
