:03:56. > :03:58.100 water voles that have been raised in captivity are being
:03:59. > :04:01.released into the wild in Yorkshire in the north of England.
:04:02. > :04:04.The number of voles roaming the UK has dropped massively in recent
:04:05. > :04:07.years and this will be the biggest release of the little
:04:08. > :04:14.We're reckoning it will take quite a few years, but for us,
:04:15. > :04:16.it will be a success whenever we see water voles.
:04:17. > :04:19.Not just in these areas, in the streams, but the whole
:04:20. > :04:21.way around the town and that they are starting to spread
:04:22. > :04:24.out and sustain the population of their own where we're no longer
:04:25. > :04:34.It's a big day for water voles - so we thought we'd put together
:04:35. > :04:42.Meet one of Britain's most endangered mammals, the water vole.
:04:43. > :04:45.They might be shy and secretive but they are the largest type
:04:46. > :04:48.of vole in Britain and can often be mistaken for a rat.
:04:49. > :04:51.Despite their name, they don't always live near water.
:04:52. > :04:54.Instead, they make burrows underground like moles and they're
:04:55. > :04:59.Their homes can have many levels that help prevent flooding
:05:00. > :05:03.as well as including rooms for nesting, a food store
:05:04. > :05:07.and sometimes even a little platform of twigs and straw
:05:08. > :05:10.where they can sunbathe aboveground.
:05:11. > :05:14.But that doesn't mean that they're not
:05:15. > :05:21.Did you know water voles are very strong swimmers?
:05:22. > :05:24.They can reach up to 500 metres on the surface and 15 underwater.
:05:25. > :05:30.Back in the 1960s, there were lots of them in Yorkshire
:05:31. > :05:33.and the north of England but they were wiped out by mink
:05:34. > :05:36.brought over from America in the 1920s and now
:05:37. > :05:44.Conservationists hope by reintroducing them
:05:45. > :05:46.into the wild there, they'll be back in the
