:00:56. > :01:02.The BBC's David Shukman sent us this from mission control.

:01:03. > :01:04.There's been a real roller-coaster of emotions

:01:05. > :01:08.here at the European Space Agency with good news and bad.

:01:09. > :01:11.What scientists are pleased about is they now have an orbiter

:01:12. > :01:14.circling Mars, looking at its atmosphere for clues

:01:15. > :01:19.But the bad news is, a lander they sent to the surface

:01:20. > :01:23.of Mars seems to have run into trouble.

:01:24. > :01:25.They kept track of it as it descended.

:01:26. > :01:28.They know that its heat shield worked, that's very important.

:01:29. > :01:32.They also know it released a parachute to slow itself down.

:01:33. > :01:35.But in the last minute, before it was meant to reach

:01:36. > :01:42.the ground it lost contact and no one really knows what happened.

:01:43. > :01:44.Thousands of people are trying to escape from one of Iraq's biggest

:01:45. > :01:47.cities ahead of huge battle expected to take place there.

:01:48. > :01:50.The Iraqi army is trying to take back control of the city of Mosul

:01:51. > :01:56.from the group that calls itself Islamic State.

:01:57. > :01:58.Charities say families and children are likely

:01:59. > :02:11.Iraq, a country in the Middle East next to Syria.

:02:12. > :02:15.The second largest city in Iraq, Mosul, is controlled

:02:16. > :02:20.by the extremist Islamist group that calls itself Islamic State.

:02:21. > :02:26.Islamic State has killed a lot of people in Iraq and Syria.

:02:27. > :02:29.It has also been behind deadly attacks around the world, including

:02:30. > :02:34.When they first started fighting, Islamic State took over

:02:35. > :02:37.lots of land and cities in Iraq, and the Iraqi government

:02:38. > :02:42.A couple of years ago, some countries including the UK

:02:43. > :02:45.and the US began dropping bombs to help the Iraqi army

:02:46. > :02:56.The Iraqi army began to win back big cities and they had been planning

:02:57. > :03:02.Now the battle has started with 30,000 army troops

:03:03. > :03:07.and small groups of fighters from the area.

:03:08. > :03:09.Mosul is important because it is the last big city

:03:10. > :03:17.So if IS loses control of Mosul, it could mean an important step

:03:18. > :03:23.to ending their rule over large parts of Iraq and Syria.

:03:24. > :03:27.But charities are worried about how the fighting will affect

:03:28. > :03:31.more than half a million children and their families in the area.

:03:32. > :03:35.Right now there are half a million children trapped inside Mosul

:03:36. > :03:38.and parents have an impossible decision to make.

:03:39. > :03:41.Either they stay and they risk being killed by bombs and bullets,

:03:42. > :03:46.So what we need now are safe escape routes for children

:03:47. > :03:49.and their families to escape from the fighting.

:03:50. > :03:52.Right now, at reception centres in the towns near to Mosul,

:03:53. > :03:55.we are seeing children arrive exhausted after two days of walking

:03:56. > :04:00.Many of these children haven't been to school for two years

:04:01. > :04:06.Many children have been caught up in the fighting and forced to leave.

:04:07. > :04:10.No one is sure how long the fighting will last for but many people hope

:04:11. > :04:17.they can one day return to the place that they used to call home.
