:01:14. > :01:15.were brought in to make sure that nothing like this
:01:16. > :01:19.would ever happen again. More than 50 years ago the region
:01:20. > :01:25.was an important source of coal - the material used to heat
:01:26. > :01:30.homes and power trains. The area was heavily mined,
:01:31. > :01:34.and for years the leftover soil, dug out with the coal,
:01:35. > :01:37.was heaped up in big piles But the ground the waste was piled
:01:38. > :01:42.up on wasn't stable. It soaked up water,
:01:43. > :01:45.loosening the rock below. Then on the 21st of October 1966,
:01:46. > :01:50.the build-up of waste suddenly collapsed, and slid down
:01:51. > :01:53.into the surrounding area covering Huge rescue efforts were made,
:01:54. > :02:01.but a lot of people died. This memorial garden is one

:02:25. > :02:29.In 1966 it was a very thriving community. If you look at it today,
:02:30. > :02:34.it is still very bright -- vibrant, a new generation have come about,
:02:35. > :02:36.and I think it is important for the people that the community has a
:02:37. > :02:40.future. And those children are our future.
:02:41. > :02:42.Before the disaster happened, there had been questions raised
:02:43. > :02:45.about how safe the waste pile was - but nothing was changed.
:02:46. > :02:47.Afterwards, an investigation found that the National Coal Board,
:02:48. > :02:49.who owned the waste tip, were at fault for
:02:50. > :02:57.The disaster here in Aberfan was devastating for many families.
:02:58. > :03:00.People around the country were shocked about what happened.
:03:01. > :03:02.As a result, new safety rules about mines and quarries
:03:03. > :03:05.were made to make schools, villages and the areas around them
:03:06. > :03:08.safe and to stop anything like this happening again.
