:00:54. > :00:55.Special services took place last night to mark 50 years

:00:56. > :00:57.since the Aberfan disaster, when a waste heap collapsed

:00:58. > :01:08.144 people died and there was a big investigation into what went wrong.

:01:09. > :01:11.After the disaster, new laws were brought in to make sure that

:01:12. > :01:15.nothing like this would ever happen again.

:01:16. > :01:22.More than 50 years ago the region was an important source of coal -

:01:23. > :01:24.the material used to heat homes and power trains.

:01:25. > :01:27.The area was heavily mined, and for years the leftover soil,

:01:28. > :01:29.dug out with the coal, was heaped up in big

:01:30. > :01:36.But the ground the waste was piled up on wasn't stable.

:01:37. > :01:41.It soaked up water, loosening the rock below.

:01:42. > :01:44.Then on the 21st of October 1966, the build-up of waste suddenly

:01:45. > :01:46.collapsed, and slid down into the surrounding area covering

:01:47. > :01:55.Huge rescue efforts were made, but a lot of people died.

:01:56. > :01:58.This memorial garden is one of the ways people in Aberfan

:01:59. > :02:05.Jeff Edwards was at the school when the disaster happened.

:02:06. > :02:12.In 1966 it was a very thriving community.

:02:13. > :02:15.If you look at it today, it is still very vibrant,

:02:16. > :02:18.a new generation have come about, and I think it is important

:02:19. > :02:20.for the people that the community has a future.

:02:21. > :02:32.Before the disaster happened, there had been questions raised

:02:33. > :02:37.about how safe the waste pile was - but nothing was changed.

:02:38. > :02:39.Afterwards, an investigation found that the National Coal Board,

:02:40. > :02:42.who owned the waste tip, were at fault for ignoring

:02:43. > :02:50.The disaster here in Aberfan was devastating for many families.

:02:51. > :02:53.People around the country were shocked about what happened.

:02:54. > :02:56.As a result, new safety rules about mines and quarries were made

:02:57. > :02:58.to make schools, villages and the areas around them safe

:02:59. > :03:04.and to stop anything like this happening again.

:03:05. > :03:06.At this school in Aberfan, children have been remembering

:03:07. > :03:11.I think it is important, because it was a big

:03:12. > :03:13.thing that happened, and we don't want it

:03:14. > :03:20.We have assembly, we do work on it in class.

:03:21. > :03:24.It is emotional, because if you think about all the people

:03:25. > :03:28.who lost their lives, at such a young age, it is very sad.

:03:29. > :03:32.But we look at the happy side and look at the future and remember

:03:33. > :03:47.We have been doing a painting of Aberfan and the future.

:03:48. > :03:52.I painted the memorial garden and the yard.
