0:00:06 > 0:00:08On the way...

0:00:08 > 0:00:14A very stinky story...

0:00:14 > 0:00:16And from poo to Who, with some exciting news

0:00:16 > 0:00:26about the Doctor.

0:00:26 > 0:00:27Now, to the huge snow storm that's hitting the east coast of America.

0:00:29 > 0:00:34A state of emergency has been declared across six states,

0:00:34 > 0:00:36including the capital Washington DC.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38Public transport has been cancelled in many places and people

0:00:38 > 0:00:42are being told to stay indoors until the storm passes.

0:00:42 > 0:00:47Forecasters reckon it'll be the heaviest snowfall in 100 years,

0:00:47 > 0:00:50with more than two feet of snow and 50 mile an hour winds.

0:00:50 > 0:00:54We've got a special report from two kids in Washington.

0:00:54 > 0:00:55I'm Kara.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57And I'm Julia.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59And we had a snow day today.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01We live in Washington, DC.

0:01:01 > 0:01:04Today we were supposed to be expecting 30 inches.

0:01:04 > 0:01:09Of snow.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12It would have been 12, but tomorrow we are going to have 30

0:01:12 > 0:01:17inches of snow, right here in Washington, DC.

0:01:17 > 0:01:22And for tomorrow, we are making a sledding path that goes

0:01:22 > 0:01:28from these stairs all the way down to here.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31OK?

0:01:31 > 0:01:34And then we're going to turn left and then we're going to do a

0:01:34 > 0:01:38snow dance like this.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41Go snow, go snow!

0:01:41 > 0:01:44And, right now BBC journalist Laura Bicker is in the US Capital

0:01:44 > 0:01:46of Washington, and she sent us this update on how the storm

0:01:46 > 0:01:48is developing there.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50This is a city on shutdown.

0:01:50 > 0:01:54Restaurants, bars, supermarkets, everything is closed as the city

0:01:54 > 0:01:58hunkers down for the worst of this blizzard.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00Over the next few hours they are expecting several inches

0:02:00 > 0:02:02of snow to fall.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05In fact forecasters have been saying this could be one of the worst

0:02:05 > 0:02:11storms to hit the nation's capital in a century.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14This is a slow-moving storm, it is expected to last all the way

0:02:14 > 0:02:22through Saturday and into Sunday.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24Certainly that is what people, forecasters and the officials,

0:02:24 > 0:02:25are worried about.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27They're worried about the accumulation of snow.

0:02:27 > 0:02:31The roads have been cleared, people were told to be home by three

0:02:31 > 0:02:33o'clock and to hunker down for the full duration of the storm.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36People are being told just not to drive, to stay at home

0:02:36 > 0:02:40until this storm passes.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44People in charge of the biggest film awards in the world,

0:02:44 > 0:02:47have promised to make big changes after being criticised

0:02:47 > 0:02:54for nominating only white actors, two years in a row.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56The Academy, who run the Oscars, say they will double the number

0:02:56 > 0:02:59of female and minority members over the next four years.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02Members vote for people they think should get an Oscar so by having

0:03:02 > 0:03:04more non-white members it's hoped more non-white actors and filmmakers

0:03:04 > 0:03:06will be nominated.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09Some actors are so disappointed with this years white-only list

0:03:09 > 0:03:11of nominations, that they will not be attending the ceremony next

0:03:11 > 0:03:15month.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18Next to a team in London using crime-fighting science to stop

0:03:18 > 0:03:20dog poo on the city streets.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23Ricky has this one.

0:03:23 > 0:03:24Dog poo.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26It's pretty gross, isn't it?

0:03:26 > 0:03:28You're having a nice stroll in the park, then

0:03:28 > 0:03:29all of a sudden, ugh!

0:03:29 > 0:03:31You come across that!

0:03:31 > 0:03:33Don't you just hate it when some people don't

0:03:33 > 0:03:36clean up their dog's mess?

0:03:36 > 0:03:40If only there was a way of finding out who did this?

0:03:40 > 0:03:42I think this might be a job for the DPIU,

0:03:42 > 0:03:49the Dog Poo Investigation Unit.

0:03:49 > 0:03:53OK, so there is no such thing as a Dog Poo Investigation Unit,

0:03:53 > 0:03:55but one local council in London is getting

0:03:55 > 0:03:59tough on dog doo-doo.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02Barking and Dagenham council have launched a scheme to test dog poo,

0:04:02 > 0:04:06to try and catch owners who fail to clear up after their pets.

0:04:06 > 0:04:08Park Rangers will collect samples of dog mess and send

0:04:08 > 0:04:12it to a lab for DNA testing.

0:04:12 > 0:04:16Scientists will be comparing the DNA found in the samples with a list

0:04:16 > 0:04:18of registered dogs, and then the owner

0:04:18 > 0:04:21will be tracked down and fined.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23Getting DNA from dogs involves a simple swab,

0:04:23 > 0:04:26taking just a few seconds.

0:04:26 > 0:04:30It will also help if the dog is ever lost.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33Registering for this scheme is voluntary at the moment,

0:04:33 > 0:04:36but some people think that not all pet owners will sign up.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39A responsible dog owner will walk around with a bag in his pocket

0:04:39 > 0:04:41and pick it up.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43I think this is a waste of money.

0:04:43 > 0:04:45It's not realistic at all, in all honesty.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48It's not going to work.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51Barking Council say the doggy forensics will help keep the area

0:04:51 > 0:04:52clean and mess-free, inviting other councils

0:04:52 > 0:04:56to follow suit.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59So is this idea barking mad, or will it actually stop owners

0:04:59 > 0:05:02and their dogs leaving this mess behind?

0:05:02 > 0:05:10Tell you what, I'm going home, that's enough dog poo for me today.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12Tennis and Andy Murray is through to the fourth

0:05:12 > 0:05:15round of the Australian Open after beating Portugal's Joao Sousa

0:05:15 > 0:05:17by three sets to one.

0:05:17 > 0:05:21He will play either Bernard Tomic or John Millman in his next match.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24If that wasn't exciting enough, Yohanna Konta, has become the first

0:05:24 > 0:05:27British woman since 1987 to make it to the last 16

0:05:27 > 0:05:30of the Australian Open.

0:05:30 > 0:05:31Konta thrashed Czech Republic's

0:05:31 > 0:05:41Denisa Allertova 6-2, 6-2 in Melbourne.

0:05:41 > 0:05:43Doctor Who's head writer and executive producer -

0:05:43 > 0:05:46Steven Moffat - is leaving the show.

0:05:46 > 0:05:50His last episode will go out in spring next year.

0:05:50 > 0:05:55That's all from me, Newsround's back right here tomorrow morning.

0:05:55 > 0:05:59Goodbye.
