:00:36. > :00:38.The animals are being hunted for the ivory in their tusks,

:00:39. > :00:41.which is then illegally sold around the world to be used

:00:42. > :00:42.in things like jewellery, ornaments and medicine.

:00:43. > :00:45.Prince William's been speaking ahead of a big meeting in South Africa

:00:46. > :00:52.When I was born, there were 1 million elephants roaming Africa.

:00:53. > :00:56.By the time my daughter Charlotte was born last year,

:00:57. > :01:02.the numbers of savanna elephants had crashed to just 350,000.

:01:03. > :01:04.At the current pace of illegal poaching, when Charlotte turns 25,

:01:05. > :01:10.the African elephants will be gone from the wild.

:01:11. > :01:14.Why is Prince William talking about this, Jenny?

:01:15. > :01:18.Well, this summer, there's been a lot of bad news about elephants.

:01:19. > :01:24.In August, a massive count of African elephants was completed.

:01:25. > :01:27.They used planes to fly over 18 countries and count the number

:01:28. > :01:36.What they found was that the number of elephants was much,

:01:37. > :01:39.much lower than people realised - in fact, almost one in three

:01:40. > :01:41.elephants has disappeared over the last seven years.

:01:42. > :01:43.It's because elephants are being killed for their tusks.

:01:44. > :01:45.They're made of ivory, which is then sold around the world

:01:46. > :01:48.by criminals called poachers, even though it's against the law.

:01:49. > :01:51.Some people even think that if things carry on like this,

:01:52. > :01:54.we could end up with no African elephants left in the wild at all.

:01:55. > :02:00.Well, tomorrow, around 180 countries will start a big meeting

:02:01. > :02:03.in South Africa, to talk about at what's happening with elephants

:02:04. > :02:17.They Betis cursing other endangered animals like right now as well. --

:02:18. > :02:18.they will be discussing what to do about other.

:02:19. > :02:21.They'll be deciding how to stop the illegal selling of ivory

:02:22. > :02:25.I'll be going to South Africa to investigate the problem for

:02:26. > :02:29.We'll find out more about how elephants are protected in nature

:02:30. > :02:31.reserves, we'll see what action is being taken to catch poachers

:02:32. > :02:33.and to stop them killing elephants for their ivory.
