0:00:13 > 0:00:15Afternoon, guys, Leah here with your lunchtime Newsround.

0:00:15 > 0:00:19Turkey says it wants to play a role in supporting the Iraqi army

0:00:19 > 0:00:22in the coming battle over one of Iraq's biggest cities.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25Thousands of people are trying to escape from Mosul as the Iraqi

0:00:25 > 0:00:28army tries to take back control from the group that calls

0:00:28 > 0:00:31itself Islamic State.

0:00:31 > 0:00:34Charities say children and families are likely to be

0:00:34 > 0:00:35among the most affected.

0:00:35 > 0:00:36Here's what you need to know.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43Iraq, a country in the middle East.

0:00:43 > 0:00:47Next to Syria.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50The second-largest city in Iraq, Mosul, is controlled

0:00:50 > 0:00:55by the extremist Islamist group that calls itself Islamic State.

0:00:56 > 0:01:00Islamic State has killed a lot of people in Iraq and Syria.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03It has also been behind deadly attacks around the world, including

0:01:03 > 0:01:07the Paris attacks in France.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10When they first started fighting, Islamic State took over

0:01:10 > 0:01:12lots of land and cities in Iraq, and the Iraqi government

0:01:12 > 0:01:15asked for help.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18A couple of years ago, some countries, including the UK

0:01:18 > 0:01:21and the US, began dropping bombs to help the Iraqi

0:01:21 > 0:01:24army fight back against Islamic State.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27It worked.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29The Iraqi army began to win back big cities,

0:01:29 > 0:01:33and they've been planning to take back Mosul for a long time.

0:01:34 > 0:01:41Now, the battle has started, with 30,000 army troops and smaller

0:01:41 > 0:01:44groups of fighters from the area.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47Mosul is important because it's the last big city that

0:01:47 > 0:01:51Islamic State controls in Iraq.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54So if IS loses control of Mosul, it could be an important step

0:01:54 > 0:01:58to ending their rule over large parts of Iraq and Syria.

0:01:59 > 0:02:03But charities are worried about how the fighting will affect more

0:02:03 > 0:02:07than 500,000 children and their families in the area.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10Right now, there are 500,000 children trapped inside Mosul,

0:02:10 > 0:02:14and parents have an impossible decision to make.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16Either they stay and risk being killed by bombs and bullets,

0:02:16 > 0:02:18or they try to leave.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21What we need now are safe escape routes for children

0:02:21 > 0:02:24and their families to escape from the fighting.

0:02:24 > 0:02:34Right now, at reception centres in the towns near Mosul,

0:02:35 > 0:02:37we see children arriving exhausted after two days

0:02:37 > 0:02:38walking through the desert.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40Many of these children haven't been to school for two

0:02:40 > 0:02:42years under IS rule.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44Over the past two years, many children have been

0:02:44 > 0:02:45caught up in the fighting.

0:02:45 > 0:02:46And forced to leave.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48No-one is sure how long the fighting will last for,

0:02:48 > 0:02:51but many Iraqis hope they can one day return to the place

0:02:51 > 0:02:53that they used to call home.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56And if you want to know more about what's happening in Iraq, take

0:02:56 > 0:02:58a look at our new web guide.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01And don't forget, if you're upset by this story

0:03:01 > 0:03:04or by anything in the news, there's lots of advice

0:03:04 > 0:03:05at over Newsround online.

0:03:05 > 0:03:09OK, time for a quick round-up today's big sports stories.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13In the cricket England have set Bangladesh a target of 286 to win

0:03:13 > 0:03:16the test on day four.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19It's getting tense, with Bangladesh only needing 48 more runs to win

0:03:19 > 0:03:22with two wickets still in hand.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25And in Formula one, Lewis Hamilton is on pole position

0:03:25 > 0:03:26for the US Grand Prix later.

0:03:26 > 0:03:31He's currently 33 points behind leader Nico Rosberg and needs

0:03:31 > 0:03:33victory to keep his hopes of winning the title alive.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Here he is.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38It is my first pole here, so it's been many years of trying.

0:03:38 > 0:03:42And a lot of great people have tried to help me get that, so I'm very,

0:03:42 > 0:03:45very happy for today.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48And first, I want to say a big thank you to all the crowd.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51I could hear the crowd cheering when I came across the line.

0:03:51 > 0:03:53The energy on that slowdown lap from everyone was

0:03:53 > 0:03:58much, much appreciated.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00Next, it's nail-biting time for anyone who's watching

0:04:00 > 0:04:02the Great British Bake Off.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05Just three days until Wednesday's final.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07Online we've been asking you who you want to win.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09But first, let's get a reminder of the contenders hoping

0:04:09 > 0:04:11to wear the baking crown.

0:04:13 > 0:04:18From 12 hopeful bakers down to three aspiring Mary Berrys.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21The Great British Bake Off is entering its final stage.

0:04:21 > 0:04:24Let's take a closer look at the final three.

0:04:24 > 0:04:30First up, Candise Brown, who has already cooked up three

0:04:30 > 0:04:31Star Baker wins, more than any of

0:04:31 > 0:04:32the other finalists.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34Best bake?

0:04:34 > 0:04:37This striking peacock show stopper in the quarterfinals has

0:04:37 > 0:04:42made her a firm favourite to win the baking crown.

0:04:42 > 0:04:46But Candise faltered when her cheesy fish pies leaked.

0:04:46 > 0:04:50Next, Andrew Smith, a jet engine designer from Northern Ireland.

0:04:50 > 0:04:54He was flying in desert week with his ice cream mousse cakes

0:04:54 > 0:04:57on a Ferris wheel, but Mary and Paul were not so impressed with his plain

0:04:57 > 0:05:00cake in botanical week.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03And last but by no means least, Jane Beadle, the first to win

0:05:03 > 0:05:07Star Baker, and she has been consistent ever since.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10But has she got enough to wow the judges in the final?

0:05:10 > 0:05:12I think this is pretty tricky for them.

0:05:12 > 0:05:17May the best baker win.

0:05:19 > 0:05:24Rachel says Andrew because he's very calm under pressure.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42And finally, there's always time for a Panda birth on Newsround.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45Here's giant panda Yaya holding her little cub.
