0:03:04 > 0:03:09didn't get the job.

0:03:09 > 0:03:14You will recognise many of these characters. They are from some of

0:03:14 > 0:03:19the most loved children's books. Have you ever wondered who the

0:03:19 > 0:03:22person is behind the drawings? His name is Axel Scheffler and we have

0:03:22 > 0:03:27been to meet him.

0:03:27 > 0:03:31Axel Scheffler is an illustrator who has delighted fans

0:03:31 > 0:03:32with his work for decades.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35He was born in Hamburg, in Germany, and came to the UK

0:03:35 > 0:03:39to study art in 1982.

0:03:39 > 0:03:40Axel spent much of his childhood drawing.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43This is some of his work when he was just eight years old.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45Since then, he's illustrated over 100 books, many

0:03:45 > 0:03:53written by Julia Donaldson.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57These are just some of his most famous creations - like Stick Man,

0:03:57 > 0:04:04The Snail And The Whale and Zog.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06The most famous of all has to be The Gruffalo.

0:04:06 > 0:04:08So, how does Axel bring his ideas to life?

0:04:08 > 0:04:12When I get the text, I start doodling and trying

0:04:12 > 0:04:15to develop the character first.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17Quite often I have an idea immediately what the characters

0:04:17 > 0:04:18should look like.

0:04:18 > 0:04:20But sometimes, like with the Grufallo,

0:04:20 > 0:04:23the editor says, "could you do him less scary?"

0:04:23 > 0:04:25So sometimes I have to adopt it a little bit.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28Usually like the smaller rodent characters.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31They're easiest for me to draw.

0:04:31 > 0:04:35What is the best thing about being an illustrator?

0:04:35 > 0:04:38I see so many families who love them and for whom the books

0:04:38 > 0:04:39are really important.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41It's the link between parents and children.

0:04:41 > 0:04:46It's a nice occupation to just draw.

0:04:46 > 0:04:50That's all we've got time for right now.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53We're back at 8.15 with more on the big winners from last nights

0:04:56 > 0:04:57National Television Awards and the rest of

0:04:57 > 0:04:58the day's big stories.

0:04:58 > 0:05:05See you then.
