0:00:13 > 0:00:16Hello! Newsround has arrived on BBC 1. We are staying put until you are

0:00:16 > 0:00:19up-to-date with the day's top stories. Leah and Ricky here to

0:00:19 > 0:00:22guide you through it all. Don't switch over, otherwise you miss

0:00:22 > 0:00:25this. We find out why the popularity of

0:00:25 > 0:00:28some pooches could mean curtains for British breeds. And find out

0:00:28 > 0:00:31how you could be cooking for the Queen.

0:00:31 > 0:00:35First, to the debate that is not going away, Scottish independence.

0:00:35 > 0:00:39Today, the people who want Scotland to break away from the rest of the

0:00:39 > 0:00:41UK have been outlining their plans for a big vote on the issue. Joe is

0:00:41 > 0:00:46live for us at Holyrood, the Scottish Parliament, where it has

0:00:46 > 0:00:54all been happening. He has the latest news for us. Bring us up to

0:00:54 > 0:00:57date. Well, it has been quite a day here. A couple of hours ago, right

0:00:57 > 0:00:59here in this very room, the most important politician in Scotland,

0:00:59 > 0:01:03the First Minister Alex Salmond, outlined his plans to let people

0:01:03 > 0:01:06here vote on whether they want Scotland to be independent. The

0:01:06 > 0:01:10headlines are that he wants a simple vote on independence, so

0:01:10 > 0:01:12people who live in Scotland will be able to say yes or no, rather than

0:01:12 > 0:01:17have other options to increase Scotland's powers which had been

0:01:17 > 0:01:20suggested. He has said the vote should be held in 2014 and that 16

0:01:20 > 0:01:26and 17 year-olds who were normally too young to vote on political

0:01:26 > 0:01:33decisions should also be allowed to have their say. Here is what he

0:01:33 > 0:01:37said. Independence will give us the chance to design policies for

0:01:37 > 0:01:42Scotland's needs. That means we can make Scotland the country we all

0:01:42 > 0:01:45know it can be, a fairer nation. Now he received a big round of

0:01:46 > 0:01:49applause at the end of his speech, so does that mean that most people

0:01:49 > 0:01:52are in favour of Scottish independence? Well, not necessarily.

0:01:52 > 0:01:56The UK prime minister David Cameron has already said he does not want

0:01:56 > 0:02:06the United Kingdom to split up and also says the majority of Scottish

0:02:06 > 0:02:06

0:02:06 > 0:02:11people don't want it either. don't think we have enough industry

0:02:11 > 0:02:16to go it alone. It is a big step to take. Yes, I think we have the

0:02:16 > 0:02:20power to do it ourselves. People want something better and they may

0:02:20 > 0:02:24think independence will give them back but I have my doubts.

0:02:24 > 0:02:29So, how big a deal would it be if Scotland could become independent?

0:02:29 > 0:02:32A very big deal. Scotland has been part of the UK for more than 300

0:02:32 > 0:02:37years, but aside from that, there are a lot of questions about how

0:02:37 > 0:02:41things would be divided up. Scotland has access to a lot of oil

0:02:41 > 0:02:45in the North Sea and they would want that all for themselves. But

0:02:46 > 0:02:54the UK as a whole also has a lot of debt, so if Scotland were to leave,

0:02:54 > 0:02:57it would need to take on a portion of that. There are other things

0:02:57 > 0:03:00like Scotland needing its own army and no longer having the BBC/ but

0:03:00 > 0:03:04at the moment, there are no suggestions that you would need a

0:03:04 > 0:03:06passport to cross the border from England. The next step though is

0:03:07 > 0:03:09for Alex Salmond to meet David Cameron to discuss the plans

0:03:09 > 0:03:12further. Thanks, Joe and we will have more

0:03:12 > 0:03:16from Scotland tomorrow. Now, picture the scene. December

0:03:17 > 0:03:202012 and the whole country is in the grip of royal fever. The

0:03:20 > 0:03:22Queen's Diamond Jubilee is in full swing and there are parties on the

0:03:23 > 0:03:26street, banners being waved and people cheering as Her Majesty get

0:03:27 > 0:03:31ready for a splendid meal fit for royalty. A meal you could be

0:03:31 > 0:03:36making! Yes, you could bag a trip to the Buckingham Palace to serve

0:03:36 > 0:03:39up grub for the Queen. And that is just where I have been.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42In the summer of this year, a select number of children will get

0:03:42 > 0:03:47to come to the kitchens at Buckingham Palace, to see if their

0:03:47 > 0:03:52winning menu can be created for the Queen. So I have come to find out

0:03:52 > 0:03:59what she likes. To answer that important question, I got to meet

0:03:59 > 0:04:05the Palace's head chef, Mark Flannaghan. What does the Queen

0:04:05 > 0:04:08like to eat? I could not possibly go into the specifics. So, coming

0:04:08 > 0:04:17up with a menu for Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee, is going to be

0:04:17 > 0:04:21tough. Tell us what would make a winning menu. I would hope to see a

0:04:21 > 0:04:24lot of regional choice. I would encourage them to talk to their

0:04:24 > 0:04:29grandparents to see what they like to eat and to use the vegetables

0:04:30 > 0:04:33and fish from their local area. This is not the first time a dish

0:04:33 > 0:04:36has been created for the Queen. To mark Her Majesty's coronation in

0:04:37 > 0:04:441953, this was invented, coronation chicken! What would you guys come

0:04:44 > 0:04:49up with almost 60 years on? I would cook a big chocolate cake with

0:04:49 > 0:04:53strawberries on the top. I would probably bake a Victoria sponge

0:04:53 > 0:04:57that -- because of Queen Victoria but I might call it an Elizabeth

0:04:57 > 0:05:02sponge! I might make some chicken tikka masala because everyone likes

0:05:02 > 0:05:07it. The food has to be British and represent the region you live in.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10They need to be easily produced in the form on these posh canapes. The

0:05:10 > 0:05:13winners will get to cook right here and serve the Queen at a special

0:05:13 > 0:05:16reception to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20All day we have been asking you online what it you would cook for

0:05:20 > 0:05:25Her Majesty. Meghan from Berkshire said she would cook macaroni and

0:05:25 > 0:05:28cheese. If she doesn't like it, she can have bread! Jason from Derby

0:05:28 > 0:05:33says, I would cook her noodles for starter, gammon and pineapple for

0:05:33 > 0:05:36her main and spotted dick for pudding.

0:05:36 > 0:05:42Now, when you think of extinct animals, your mind might turn to

0:05:42 > 0:05:47dodos? Already gone! Or pandas? Always at risk. But what about

0:05:47 > 0:05:50British dogs? Well, not all of them. A new study says some breeds are at

0:05:50 > 0:05:55serious risk because people have turned their attention to more

0:05:55 > 0:05:58exotic dogs. Flick through the pages of any

0:05:58 > 0:06:02magazine these days and you'll see that certain breeds of dog have

0:06:02 > 0:06:04become the must-have celebrity accessory. Thanks to Paris Hilton,

0:06:04 > 0:06:11actress Katherine Heigl and film star Mickey Rourke, breeds like

0:06:11 > 0:06:14chihuahuas and huskies are in demand like never before. But now

0:06:14 > 0:06:18there is a warning that could have a devastating effect on some other

0:06:18 > 0:06:21more traditional breeds of man's best friend. Dog experts, the

0:06:21 > 0:06:31Kennel Club, said the obsession with celeb-like pooches has left

0:06:31 > 0:06:31

0:06:31 > 0:06:34some types of dog on the verge of extinction. Old-fashioned breeds

0:06:34 > 0:06:39are beginning to lose their popularity with the public because

0:06:39 > 0:06:43so many new breeds are coming into the country. One of the worst

0:06:43 > 0:06:46affected is the English setter. Demand for them has gone down by

0:06:46 > 0:06:50two-thirds in the last ten years and last year, there were less than

0:06:50 > 0:06:54300 setter pups registered in the whole of the UK. Not all breeds are

0:06:54 > 0:06:57in trouble. The popularity of the official royal dog, the corgi, has

0:06:57 > 0:07:01gone through the roof since the royal wedding last year, with sales

0:07:01 > 0:07:07up 134 per cent! But after years as man's best friend, it seems some

0:07:07 > 0:07:10other breeds of very sadly going out of fashion fast.

0:07:10 > 0:07:15And finally, yesterday we told about the northern lights that were

0:07:15 > 0:07:24visible from some parts of the UK. Now check out these new pictures of

0:07:24 > 0:07:27what has been causing them. They show a solar storm heading towards

0:07:27 > 0:07:29Earth. It can interfere with technology down here like

0:07:29 > 0:07:33electrical power grids, communications systems and even

0:07:33 > 0:07:37sat-navs. But don't worry, it will not do you any harm. That is your

0:07:37 > 0:07:45lot, everyone. Thank you for stopping by. I will be back just
