:00:18. > :00:23.It's a chance for people to take time to think about the millions

:00:24. > :00:25.of Jewish people and others who were killed by Hitler

:00:26. > :00:28.and his Nazi party during World War II.

:00:29. > :00:29.Ricky's been finding out what happened and hearing

:00:30. > :00:36.When World War II broke out in 1939, Germany was run by Adolf Hitler

:00:37. > :00:43.Hitler thought Jewish people were inferior and planned ways

:00:44. > :00:49.Anti-Jewish laws were passed and windows were smashed and Jewish

:00:50. > :00:52.people were forced out of their homes.

:00:53. > :00:55.The Nazis rounded up millions of Jews as well as disabled people,

:00:56. > :00:59.gay people and other groups that Hitler thought were inferior,

:01:00. > :01:02.and sent them to prisons called concentration camps.

:01:03. > :01:05.Families were split up and forced to do hard physical work

:01:06. > :01:15.Millions of Jews from across Europe died.

:01:16. > :01:19.It is thought seven out of ten Jews across Europe died.

:01:20. > :01:21.Some children did escape Nazi Germany.

:01:22. > :01:22.Ruth was one of those who managed to escape.

:01:23. > :01:25.Street by street, the Jews were cleared, and any moment

:01:26. > :01:30.We opened the door to a woman from the British Embassy who had

:01:31. > :01:37.She brought the entry visa to Britain, train tickets to get

:01:38. > :01:42.through Germany, through Holland and a ferry to Ramsgate.

:01:43. > :01:45.Heinz also managed to escape the Holocaust.

:01:46. > :01:56.Frank, my brother, was in Leeds and he tried to get me a trainee

:01:57. > :01:59.post and he finally succeeded and we came to Leeds.

:02:00. > :02:09.We managed to get visas for our parents and they came,

:02:10. > :02:11.thank God, because four days later war broke out.

:02:12. > :02:14.Every year people remember those who lost their lives

:02:15. > :02:17.It helps teach us about these terrible events and make sure

:02:18. > :02:20.they are not forgotten so they can never happen again.

:02:21. > :02:22.Gena Turgel was just 14 when her family were rounded up

:02:23. > :02:25.by German troops and sent to a prison called a concentration

:02:26. > :02:28.She was held for two years in terrible conditions

:02:29. > :02:32.She now works hard to make sure people remember what happened.

:02:33. > :02:49.Take me back to when you were 14. What happened to you? The Germans

:02:50. > :02:54.invaded Poland and we found ourselves in Belsen concentration

:02:55. > :03:03.camp and the Nazis came and shouted at us and there were no bunks, no

:03:04. > :03:08.mattresses, no bunks, bare floors. One morning I woke up, stood up and

:03:09. > :03:18.I could not believe my eyes. And the food was very scarce and nobody was

:03:19. > :03:25.allowed to leave. The frost and the fear and the way we felt was

:03:26. > :03:29.impossible to describe. Gena has written a book about her experience

:03:30. > :03:36.and given many talks. She has been given awards for her work, telling

:03:37. > :03:42.young people what happened. What happened to 6 million people,

:03:43. > :03:50.children, innocent grown-ups, so much talent, so many doctors and

:03:51. > :03:56.teachers and scientists and people who could contribute to the world.

:03:57. > :04:03.And all of them, for nothing, killed because they were Jews. This is why

:04:04. > :04:09.I feel it is so important for young people and generations to come to

:04:10. > :04:11.learn about it. We should never allow it again.
