:00:13. > :00:16.Afternoon everyone, Ricky here with Wednesday's Newsround.

:00:17. > :00:19.Today, across the world, people are remembering the Holocaust.

:00:20. > :00:22.It's a chance for people to think about the millions of Jewish people

:00:23. > :00:25.and others who were killed by Hitler and his Nazi party during World War

:00:26. > :00:30.I've been looking back at what happened and hearing

:00:31. > :00:36.When World War II broke out in 1939, Germany was run by Adolf Hitler

:00:37. > :00:42.Hitler thought Jewish people were inferior and planned ways

:00:43. > :00:48.Anti-Jewish laws were passed and windows were smashed and Jewish

:00:49. > :00:51.people were forced out of their homes.

:00:52. > :00:54.The Nazis rounded up millions of Jews as well as disabled people,

:00:55. > :00:57.gay people and other groups that Hitler thought were inferior,

:00:58. > :01:01.and sent them to prisons called concentration camps.

:01:02. > :01:04.Families were split up and forced to do hard physical work

:01:05. > :01:14.It is thought seven out of ten Jews across Europe died.

:01:15. > :01:17.Some children did escape Nazi Germany.

:01:18. > :01:20.Ruth was one of those who managed to escape.

:01:21. > :01:23.Street by street, the Jews were cleared, and any moment

:01:24. > :01:28.We opened the door to a woman from the British Embassy who had

:01:29. > :01:35.She brought the entry visa to Britain, train tickets to get

:01:36. > :01:41.through Germany, through Holland and a ferry to Ramsgate.

:01:42. > :01:45.Heinz also managed to escape the Holocaust.

:01:46. > :01:51.Frank, my brother, was in Leeds and he tried to get me a trainee

:01:52. > :01:56.post and he finally succeeded and we came to Leeds.

:01:57. > :02:00.We managed to get visas for our parents and they came,

:02:01. > :02:04.thank God, because four days later war broke out.

:02:05. > :02:06.Every year people remember those who lost their lives

:02:07. > :02:11.It helps teach us about these terrible events and make sure

:02:12. > :02:17.they are not forgotten so they can never happen again.

:02:18. > :02:20.Well one holocaust survivor has been sharing his story with hundreds

:02:21. > :02:26.of pupils across the country, via the first ever live stream

:02:27. > :02:45.I went to meet some of the children watching.

:02:46. > :02:53.Most of us wore this Jewish star. Rudy Oppenheimer is a survivor of a

:02:54. > :02:57.concentration camp in Germany. He was just 12 years old when he was

:02:58. > :03:06.sent to the camp along with his family. We walked for three miles

:03:07. > :03:09.and we could see the camp. Concentration camps were places

:03:10. > :03:14.where the Nazis kept people prisoner. The Nazis made conditions

:03:15. > :03:20.so bad that people would die. People were deliberately killed or allowed

:03:21. > :03:26.to starve. Rudy's mum and dad were among those who died. People today,

:03:27. > :03:30.we do not realise how much we have got and for them they were nearly

:03:31. > :03:36.dying and the lives were almost being taken away for who they were.

:03:37. > :03:42.On the 15th of April 1945, the British Army liberated the camp. It

:03:43. > :03:46.makes me feel really sad knowing someone has gone through that at the

:03:47. > :03:51.same age as me. It is weird to think that 70 years ago people could be so

:03:52. > :03:58.different and racist to how we are now. Everyone should be treated the

:03:59. > :04:02.same way. For generations to come, they should know about what happened

:04:03. > :04:05.and remember it. Nobody should have gone through that and it is

:04:06. > :04:11.upsetting that so many people had to. As the people who survived the

:04:12. > :04:15.Holocaust, travelling is not as easy to share the stories. This

:04:16. > :04:24.interactive talk gives young people the chance to find out what happened

:04:25. > :04:28.70 years ago. There is a special guide to the Holocaust on our

:04:29. > :04:32.website. Also online, you can hear more from survivors who were held in

:04:33. > :04:38.concentration camps. There are lots of other interesting

:04:39. > :04:41.stories for you to look at and new stories are being added

:04:42. > :04:44.all the time, so keep coming back. Enjoy the rest of your day Jenny's

:04:45. > :04:48.back in the morning with more great stories for you so from

:04:49. > :04:51.the Newsround team.
