0:00:11 > 0:00:12Good afternoon.

0:00:12 > 0:00:13I'm Naz and this is Newsround.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16First, the company that owns Alton Towers has been given

0:00:16 > 0:00:19a massive punishment for making big mistakes that led to

0:00:19 > 0:00:23a rollercoaster crash last June.

0:00:23 > 0:00:2316 people were injured, five of them seriously,

0:00:25 > 0:00:29when their carriage on the Smiler ride hit an empty one on the track.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32Serious accidents like this are extremely rare, so there's

0:00:32 > 0:00:37been a big investigation into how it happened.

0:00:37 > 0:00:39Today a judge called the crash a "catastrophic failure"

0:00:39 > 0:00:44and an accident that could have been avoided.

0:00:44 > 0:00:48Merlin Attractions has been ordered to pay a fine of ?5 million,

0:00:48 > 0:00:51a record punishment for a theme park.

0:00:51 > 0:00:55Well, BBC reporter Sophie Long sent us this from Alton Towers.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57Merlin Attractions, the company that owns Alton Towers,

0:00:57 > 0:01:00was fined ?5 million today for what the judge called

0:01:00 > 0:01:04a "catastrophic failure of health and safety rules."

0:01:04 > 0:01:06Two teenage girls, Vicky Balch and Leah Washington,

0:01:06 > 0:01:09both lost legs after the accident that happened on the Smiler

0:01:09 > 0:01:12roller coasters here in June of last year.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15One mother, who was on the ride with her two daughters,

0:01:15 > 0:01:19says she is still trying to deal with what happened here last June.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22The judge said the accident could have been avoided

0:01:22 > 0:01:26if the company had proper plans in place, and he said that people

0:01:26 > 0:01:29who were trapped on the ride were left there up in the air

0:01:29 > 0:01:32for far too long, some of them for up to five hours.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35The company apologised to the victims of the crash in court

0:01:35 > 0:01:38today, and again afterwards, when they reacted to the fine

0:01:38 > 0:01:41that they have been given.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44But they say they have made changes here, so that something like this

0:01:44 > 0:01:47can never happen again.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50Next, to South Africa where there's been some important news

0:01:50 > 0:01:52on the future of elephants.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55Jenny has travelled there and sent us this report.

0:01:55 > 0:01:56Hi Newsrounders.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59I've only been in South Africa for a few hours, and already

0:01:59 > 0:02:02I've seen a cheetah, some zebras and a baboon.

0:02:02 > 0:02:03The wildlife here is just incredible.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06I've travelled from Johannesburg up to the north-east of

0:02:06 > 0:02:09the country, near the famous Kruger National Park,

0:02:09 > 0:02:12that's where lions, rhino and elephants live.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15Now, I'm in South Africa, because elephants are in danger.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17Every year, thousands of them are killed for their ivory

0:02:17 > 0:02:19in their tasks.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22World leaders are meeting for the next eight days to decide

0:02:22 > 0:02:25what is to be done about it.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27Yesterday there was a vote on whether countries should be

0:02:27 > 0:02:30allowed to buy or sell ivory in future.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32And they voted not to.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34Some conservationists are happy about this,

0:02:34 > 0:02:37but some countries want to be able to sell ivory, they say to make

0:02:37 > 0:02:40money to protect elephants.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43There are a lot of decisions still to be made, and I'm

0:02:43 > 0:02:48going to be right in South Africa reporting on them for Newsround.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51Thanks Jenny.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54Go to Newsround online for our guide on what the ivory trade is,

0:02:54 > 0:02:56and how it's affecting elephants around the world.

0:02:56 > 0:03:01You can also watch 11 things you never knew about the animals!

0:03:01 > 0:03:04And something else you probably never knew, there are jets of water

0:03:04 > 0:03:08on one of the moons circling the planet Jupiter.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11These images of Europa, sent back from Nasa's hubble space

0:03:11 > 0:03:13telescope, show what experts reckon is water spurting out

0:03:13 > 0:03:23from the moon's huge ocean under the surface.

0:03:23 > 0:03:24Doctor Sarah Crowther from the University

0:03:24 > 0:03:25of Manchester explains.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27There's lots of water on Europa.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30But the surface is covered in a very thick layer of ice.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32We know that water is essential to life.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34Nasa was very careful to say they haven't found aliens, they

0:03:34 > 0:03:36haven't found any life there yet.

0:03:36 > 0:03:40But these jets of water erupting from under the ice surface might

0:03:40 > 0:03:45make it easier to explore.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48From another planet to a shining star, 15-year-old Ellie Robinson,

0:03:48 > 0:03:51who stormed to gold in the pool at the Rio Paralympics returned

0:04:03 > 0:04:05So what's it like for the champion to be back at school,

0:04:05 > 0:04:10and what do her mates make of it all?

0:04:10 > 0:04:12It's just having one of my best friends back at school
